22sec -> (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (12/13/2018 10:58:30 PM)

The British I Corps would have been responsible for a critical sector of NATO's Northern Army Group's (NORTHAG) front. The corps sector covered the area from Hannover in the north to the Harz Mountains in the south. The ground just north of the Harz Mountains is a mix of rolling farmland, and wooded ridges - ideal terrain for the British to begin to mount a defense against any Warsaw Pact thrust.

Great work! Is the Hanover map your next target?

I don’t know. That’s actually the area I thought about doing first before settling on Goslar. I may do one more in the British sector, if not the other candidates are the Schleswig-Holstein area, or along the Elbe-Seiten Canal, or somewhere in southern Germany in the US VII Corps area. I’m open to suggestions....

I love this forum (Matrix) for its wealth of talented, creative people. Thank you!

CCIP-subsim -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (12/14/2018 1:39:25 AM)

Great map - lots of fun to be had in a relatively compact space here! I really like the challenging terrain in this one.

Great map, thanks.

The work you put on this map is really impressive! How did you optimize your workflow, or did you classified all the different terrain features and drawn all the roads entirely by hand?

I've been trying to use landsat historic imagery to automatically classify some features and also to make others more visible, but still, the drawing process takes just way too long.

Cheers

The roads and terrain is exported OSM data. I use Global Mapper and Gimp to set everything up including adding buildings and trees along residential roads. I finally use the in-game editor to edit and also add all the little details.

I also use GM for most everything, but I still couldnt crack the roads. I know how to use OSM and shapefiles, including to classify different kinds of vegetations by their clorophila content and converting the data to vector. Specifically talking about roads, do you export from GM directly into terrain.bmp? I mean, without needing to manually fix all the missing pixels inside the angled lines? Or you just export the vector data from GM into a raster, and then work the image in Gimp to fix the lines? If not, what settings are you using for the roads line vectors in GM?

Image = directly from GM into PS

The roads....there is actually an old little program Veitikka wrote back in the freeware day’s that connects all those pixels.

I’ve asked Veitikka if I can share. I’ll post it in a new thread.

Lovely map, great for naval warfare. Was missing a map like this.

22sec -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (6/23/2019 2:35:26 PM)

Shameless bump for the new players. Also really getting the itch to do a new map to take advantage of the campaign system. Anyone got a location in Germany you would like to see?

exsonic01 -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (6/24/2019 3:00:30 PM)

Hmmm if you are interested in Northern Germany, Hamburg - Lubeck line? Or German-Denmark border? Lubeck was border city, AFAIK it is supposed to be a "hot place" during hypothetical hot cold war.

Laurenburg - Buchen region, in front of Hamburg, might be a good place too, but it would be too similar with current Northern German Plain map.

You could do Hanover - Celle, or cities near Weser river like Hameln and Rinteln. But those are not that far from your Goslar region.

Assuming NATO retreat, secondary echelon like the region around Paderborn - Dortmund line, or east of Bonn-Cologne region, or south east region of Bonn (somewhere between Frankfurt - Bonn) might be great to see. I remember, the Dutch-German border at North (west or south west of Bremen) was discussed before, right?

For those "second echelon" region, we could expect to see some "no-go-zone" due to tactical nukes.

Rhine-river crossing points would be also a good place, Mannheim - Frankfurt region for example.

I think I need to start my Korea map work again, still very busy but I could start with 3~4hr per a week.

Any plan to upload this map to steam workshop with your missions?

I have a scenario plan based on Goslar map which I wish to upload to steam workshop.

22sec -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (11/5/2019 4:14:32 PM)

I don’t know if I want the Steam version. My son uses my Steam account which means we can’t play Steam games at the same time. If you redeem the Steam key do we lose the non-Steam version? 🧐

budd -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (11/5/2019 4:57:51 PM)

No, I both versions of several matrix games installed.

exsonic01 -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (11/5/2019 6:08:32 PM)

Like budd's comment, you can install & keep both versions (steam & matrix) without any issue.

If you're unavailable, then how about asking devs to upload Goslar map as a part of basic database or as a workshop item, and put your name as map designer?

22sec -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (1/27/2020 11:25:36 PM)

I finally got around to adding this to the Steam Workshop.

Fishbreath -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (2/7/2020 4:12:50 PM)

How did you generate your preview image? I'm looking for some way of making mine a bit more stylish.

I took different images including satellite imagery, sloped elevation imagery, and the terrain.bmp, and played around in GIMP with layers and opacity until I found what I liked.

jason oates -> RE: (Map) Goslar (BAOR Sector) (Version 1.0) (7/31/2020 3:59:18 PM)

Great map. Thanks. I always thought that the ability of the Soviets to cross the Weser near Hameln was key to their further advance. Simulating the battle before the river then an attempt at a crossing would be fun. As i lived in Minden, the defence of the Minden Gap was always going to be a challenge to the local infantry battalion.

I agree with the importance of this sector to the overall success of a Soviet assault against NATO. I’ve toyed with the idea of a Hameln map, and have all the data for it. I’m kind of waiting to see what Veitikka and the guys are up to. If the main effort has shifted to a new engine and program then I am more hesitant to commit the time needed for a map for a game that might be out by the time I’m done. If, on the other hand it will be a little while before that happens then I’d probably dive in to it. I’ve tinkered with maps of areas outside Germany, but what I’ve realized is I’m an old Cold War warrior at heart, and this era and area is really where I won’t to play.

Maybe we can get an update soon? Things have been awfully quiet around here...

We're working on new DLC content, and the next update coinciding with the DLC release will have a linear campaign system and minor improvements. The system has already been implemented and we've been designing sequel features. The COVID-19 situation has slowed down work of some team members (not me).

Thanks for the update.

Finally linear campaign system - maybe I do need to a map west of the Goslar area I mapped? 🤔
