Japanese propaganda targetting Indian elephants and inciting them to revolt. Unfortunately or fortunately the beasts could not read well enough.

Actually...these are both Ferdinands, AND have the "upgrade".
Note the bow MG bulge...[;)]

Kursk had no elefants, just Ferdinands. There were some cats on the german side an some cat killers on the other.

Well, at least those few Jap soldiers "saw the elephant".

geofflambert -> RE: Elephants in WW2 (6/25/2019 10:07:02 PM)

Some historians doubt that any of Hannibal's elephants made it over the Alps, and there's no convincing evidence that any did (last I checked).

Maybe in the stomachs of his soldiers . . .

I thought Polybius said Hannibal had 'a few' elephants that survived the crossing. I could be wrong.

MakeeLearn -> RE: Elephants in WW2 (6/26/2019 2:10:01 AM)

Elephants were at The Battle of Trebia. After the battle, many died from the cold. I think that the last of them died in the swamps north of Rome.

A VERY GOOD book:

Hannibal
By Theodore Ayrault Dodge
First print 1891
!995 reprint.

The most detailed, and interestingly written, book Ive seen on this subject.
Dodge was a officer in a New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He was at Gettysburg.
Dodge wrote many books on the Civil War and on ancient warfare. He toured the battlefields for his Hannibal book.
His experiences give him a "insight" to his subject.
He wrote a 4 volume set on Napoleon.

Denniss -> RE: Elephants in WW2 (6/26/2019 8:31:00 AM)

These 2 Ferdinands at Kursk were not shot either, they ran over mines and were likely given up and blown.
Strange to see them having their gun travel lock still in place

MakeeLearn -> RE: Elephants in WW2 (6/26/2019 2:30:06 PM)

The 2 above are 501 and 502.
