Wild Bill -> A New Mega Campaign is Coming (6/20/2003 11:21:07 PM)

I've been reading carefully over the last months the interest of so many for the brilliantly done program by Michael Wood of Steel Panthers World at War Mega Campaign.

Some of you may be aware that I was the principal coordinator for Mega Campaign Desert Fox - 41 and Mega Campaign Watchtower - 42.

The development of a Mega Campaign is the hardest thing I have ever done in my gaming career. It is very time consuming, sometimes frustrating and can be a pain in the buttocks. You want to add an "Amen" here, Brent and all team captains? ;)

The end result, however, is something wondrous to behold: a veritable encyclopedia of history, photos, articles and some great scenarios. It has immense replay value.

I want another Mega Campaign. I approached David Heath a few weeks ago and after some discussion, we have decided to do one.

At this point I cannot divulge the theme. I will say, however, that it may catch you by surprise and I believe you will be happy with the choice.

The approach to this Mega Campaign will be a little different. I've learned a lot from the first two I did (with the help of some great folks...a joint effort!).

Hopefully, this one will offer you two completely different threads of progress, so that you can play it at least twice without ever replaying a single scenario.

Pictures, articles and some hard and unique fights await you. It is a combination of both history and what if situations.

I may not be able to answer a lot or write a lot in the next few months. I'm sure you will understand.

What do you think? Want it?

Uh Bill?

There's a phone call for you...

The local police want to know where to set up the barricades and how many people to let through at a time to kiss your feet...

;)

Bernie, your humor is going to help us through this. Keep me smiling, my friend. I have (or we have) some very hard work ahead of us.

Bernie -> Can you picture this? (6/21/2003 10:59:34 PM)

In a darkened room, deep in Georgia, a man sits at a desk in front of a computer. Although he wears no uniform you sense he is a military man, an officer in fact.

Personnel files flash across his screen. He is assembling a team, and each candidate is carefully considered and weighed. At last his selections are made. A few keystrokes are entered and, instantly, the orders go out, "New Mega Campaign is coming...saddle up!"

In minutes the replies start coming back as, around the globe, the selected team prepares for the ordeal ahead.

Desks are cleared and equipment readied. Protective armor is strapped on, in the form of carpal tunnel wrist guards. Glare screens are cleaned and adjusted. High backed command chairs are swiveled into position. Load bearing vests are donned and the pockets are stocked with rations... Twinkies, pretzels, chips, candy bars...all manner of snacks and goodies are slipped into place. Under desk refrigerators are opened and loaded with sodas, beer, beverages of all kinds. Coffee makers are set up and loaded. Small ashtrays are cleaned and set aside, bigger, deeper ones are brought out from storage. Bottles of eyewash are lined up in easy reach, ready to soothe aching eyes in the wee hours.

A quick shower and shave, perhaps the last for a long time, and all that is left is to notify the loved ones. In some places tempers flare, in others understanding spouses and friends give final hugs and it's time to go.

With hardly a glance back, the gleam of a new challenge in their eyes, almost as one the team closes and locks the doors to their rooms and take their places. They are going off to war, a war fought half a century ago, but which is still fought today on computers around the globe. The team is ready.

Wow! I'm picturing this in my mind as a movie unfolds before my eyes. Quite descriptive and very accurate, Bernie.

Keep those writing skills sharp. I'm about to put them to work (G)

If you like this you should read my books. :)

Then again, I somehow get the idea you're not one for romance novels or kids books. ;)

The big question is, what movie came to mind when you read it? I had "Space Cowboys" in mind while I wrote it. :D

As for keeping the skills sharp, I can't think of a week gone by out of the last three decades where I didn't write at least 10k words on something. Even back in '99, when I was homeless and living on the streets after a fire wiped me out, at least half the money I had was spent on cheap notebooks and pencils.

It has it's costs, this disease called "being a writer", but I can't ever imagine taking a "cure" for it. Some folks look at what you write and say, "Well, that looks easy! I could do that!", to which I reply, "As Hemmingway once said, 'It's easy to be a writer. Just open a vein and bleed on paper.'" Amen, Papa Hemmingway... Amen! ;)

Don Doom -> (6/22/2003 2:51:58 AM)

KG Erwin -> Hannibal Lecter's Take on the new MC (6/22/2003 9:32:00 AM)

"Wild Bill is on the loose again, eh? Goody goody...lots of blood and body parts. It will go well with a nice chianti and fava beans. Clarice, we will be having guests...for dinner. "
