AleRonin -> Greetings! (4/30/2019 6:32:02 PM)

Hello to all!

New player here, I think I will be busy for the rest of my gaming life with this monster (hopefully for a very long time [:D]), what a beautiful mess!

Usually I prefer to read all topics and all guides before to start a game but here I have to change my approach, start small and easy!

I'm not very keen on playing against AI, therefore what would be the best scenario(s) to start with?
Or better, is there any order to follow before the big campaign?

Thanks!

Leandros -> RE: Greetings! (4/30/2019 6:43:02 PM)

Welcome to the GAME, AleRonin! You have obviously grabbed the essentials!

Welcome to the learning cliff. I started with the grand campaign and a background in WWII and the Pacific. I restarted about 6 times to get good feel of the game. I would recommend starting against the AI to learn the basics then try Coral Sea and Guadalcanal against a human. There are newbie guides which I don't have handy. Feel free to search and ask questions. Good luck....GP

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: Greetings! (4/30/2019 6:55:25 PM)

Start reading the manual, completely

then I suggest try a few games of Coral Sea, then Aleutians campaign,

AW1Steve -> RE: Greetings! (4/30/2019 7:09:43 PM)

Read the manual. Keep in in the bath room for reading matter. Read everything Alfred , Obvert and other "wise man" players have written. Then the "fun" begins. Here's what I recommend. 1st play against the AI in every single small scenario. I recommend playing one side , then play it again as the other. Then find a mentor to play against you in each of the small scenario's. Again , play as one side , then the other. Then try playing against the AI in the "grand campaign as the allies. Ask for help from the other players. Then ask for more. Eventually , you'll decide to try playing the grand campaign as allies against a real , experienced player. Find the most experienced person that will play against you. Be very, very ,VERY nice to them. Be honest , and try to verify that you ARE NOT playing another rookie. Asking a experienced player to take on the PBEM is asking as very time consuming thing. Be sure that you will put a lot of effort into it. They are doing you a extremely good turn. Respect them. And learn to eventually kick the crap out of them. [:D]

Welcome aboard shipmate! [:)] May this game bring you much joy , and may you come to treasure time spent playing it as well as we do. [;)]

jwolf -> RE: Greetings! (4/30/2019 7:19:28 PM)

Echoing Jorge, the Coral Sea and Aleutians scenarios are good short ones to get practice with the basic mechanics of the game. Try each one against the AI, playing both the Allies and the Japanese so you get a sense of what each side is capable of.

The full campaign can take as long as the real war. [X(]

Actually, the full campaign will take longer than the real war, as real life intrudes. We have the luxury of taking a day off now and then, they didn't.

AleRonin -> RE: Greetings! (4/30/2019 7:48:55 PM)

Thanks to all!

I have read the manual and played few turns against the AI (small scenarios only), I have read some guides too (like The Air Mission Coordination Guide v2.1).

There are 587 pages in the main forum, a couple of years and I'm fine [:D]

Ok for the Coral Sea and Aleutians scenarios then, next Guadalcanal [:)]

Edit: pages not topics!

Now that you've read the manual, remember that patches have changed all the important stuff. [:D]

Oh well...only 134 pages [:)]

Btw, is there an up-to-date manual or the original one+WhatsNew are all what I need?

Thanks

Yaab -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 10:04:26 AM)

Alfred tried to compile the updated manual, but his effort fizzled.

The original manual is mostly valid. There are FAQs, newbie help and Alfred 101s threads in the forums that explain game's features in greater detail.

BTW, after some manual reading, new players ask about the tutorial mentioned in the original manual. There is no tutorial, sadly.

This is NOT a problem yet. There are many players who do not know English. We need to first translate entire manual, then read, then study!

Yaab -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 12:41:14 PM)

...in repose, clutching his English manual.

Canoerebel -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 2:15:30 PM)

Never, ever read the manual first! The first order of business is to install the game and start playing - to admire the map and the lovely counters, to behold the massive amount of intriguing information, to whet your appetite for learning so much that you can't wait to read the manual, the AARs, and everything else you can get ahold of.

Reading the manual first would be like reading a Johnson and Johnson report before your first amorous encounter with your first true love.

... although sometimes it might be helpful at least get some advice about how to unload the troops before actually getting to the invasion beach. You really do need some tips on escort coordination and altitudes for release of ordnance as well.

Huh? Johnson & Johnson or Masters and Johnson? You would want to read the JNJ manual before using your first bandaid, lol. Should be very instructive!

Then again, perhaps he was thinking of other medical 'manuals' to read apriori. Johnson and Johnson IS a leader in antibiotic research. Perhaps Canoerebel wanted to recommend the need to flesh out his understanding of their latest advances before committing accordingly. Very prescient. [;)]

What!!! The CIA was producing reports on what you and your Johnson were doing before you met your wife? [X(]
That's really rude of them! No wonder you took to long hikes to the middle of nowhere! [:D]

Welcome to the insanity AleRonin! I second the suggestion to start playing and get familiar with the screens for various types of units/bases and their sub-screens. It is hard to comprehend the manual without being a bit familiar with the screens, buttons and hypertext links that the game offers you.

Most buttons are toggles back and forth, but there are a few instances where clicking a button and then running a turn will lock you into a choice you may not like. Always save the game in a new slot before trying something you might want to take a mulligan on later!

And when you can't figure out what is going on even after consulting the manual, just ask the forum members in the War Room section or even the main forum.

Canoerebel -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 3:40:58 PM)

Masters and Johnson report was a second-rate knockoff. Johnson and Johnson report was the groundbreaking report that proved that breast reduction surgery is the greatest transgression in the history of mankind.

But I digress....You gotta look at the screen and fiddle around before you start reading manuals.

Agreed. I always fiddle with the nobs before reading the manual...

pontiouspilot -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 5:04:57 PM)

Buggar the manual!! If you look at that long enough you will talk yourself out of playing. Jump in with both feet and ask all the stupid questions you want....ignore the old farts that snarl "read the manual".

HansBolter -> RE: Greetings! (5/1/2019 6:12:01 PM)

Experimentation is the best teacher.

Just wade in and start playing.
