Thin Red Line
Empire of the Sun
Schindler's List
Black Hawk Down
Lawrence of Arabia

Ah hell...I would add the Hurt Locker and Glory as well...

Now I have to see Cross of Iron, can't believe I have never seen it! I was a teenager the last time I watched Waterloo, going to have to watch that again to see how it rates these days.

Though war movies, the top three are also on my top list for favorite movies in all genres.

The best "not a movie" is Band of Brothers

Not American, but I hate not mentioning them...I love Das Boot and Gallipoli and they would make the international list.

And the Razzie definitely goes to Pearl Harbor (2001)!

Jellicoe -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/25/2019 9:02:49 AM)

Above us the Waves - Kenneth More and Donald Sinden use midget subs to do for the Tirpitz
Battle of Britain - For a pre CGI era some fabulous aerial sequences using the entire Spanish airforce! (they still had HeIIIs and Me109s)
Angels One-five
In Which We Serve
and for a bit of fun - Bell Bottom George or Get Cracking

I haven't seen this movie. Is it supposed to portray the midget attacks in Northern Norway or in the Trondheim Fjord?

Nice piece of music from We Were Soldiers.

Both the film and the music belong on my top lists.

Jellicoe -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/25/2019 2:31:35 PM)

Hi Leandros

It portrays both the chariot and then the midget sub attacks on the Tirpitz, so I guess northern Norway

Thank you - googling the movie I find that it supposedly cover both the one in the Trondheim Fjord (Operation Title, 1942) and the other in Northern Norway.

BIG FAN of that movie and its soundtrack!

You know, even though I think either Paths of Glory or All's Quiet on the Western Front should rank number one, if you put Zulu together with Zulu Dawn you've got one hell of a piece of work. Either one separately is fairly amazing, together they tell a great story.

And, as much as any such, they both endeavored to be historically accurate, and mostly succeeded.

scout1 -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/26/2019 2:51:37 AM)

How can the following movies not have been mentioned thus far ….

The Longest Day
In Harms Way
Battle of the Bulge
Glory

The Longest Day and Glory were mentioned on some people's fave lists. Battle of the Bulge was panned for the final fuel barrel rolling scene.
I thought of In Harms Way, but the naval battle scenes were clunkily done - obvious models with unrealistic shell splashes and explosions. Sink the Bismarck did a much better job with models and effects.

geofflambert -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/26/2019 7:14:55 PM)

Zulu was one of the first movies where Michael Caine got some serious attention. This bit isn't about that, but it's great fun to watch.

scout1 -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/26/2019 10:58:15 PM)

Sink the Bismark was on my list and yes it had better special effects but that is more of a budget issue …..

Battle of the Budge should be on the list for the musical scores alone …..

Patriot is another suggestion of mine ...

geofflambert -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/26/2019 11:05:44 PM)

Battle of the Bulge was about halfway between Kelly's Heroes and some respectable movie. Sorry. I know, I have to do something about these negative vibes.

geofflambert -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/27/2019 12:44:05 AM)

Just sayin'. Here's some Battle of the Bulge music. The Sound of Music can be described as a war film and it has better music. The Battle of Britain has way better music. The Bridge over the River Kwai has way better music. The flipping Great Escape has way better music. In case you don't remember, and that would be all too easy, here's some Battle of the Bulge music.

RangerJoe -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/27/2019 4:11:06 PM)

I prefer the German All's Quiet on the Western Front to the American one with John Boy.

Let us not forget:
To Hell and Back
Sergeant York.

Audie Murphy had at least one flashback/PTSD episode while making To Hell and Back and testified before Congress about what we now call PTSD. Sergeant York never made any money from his heroics other than what he received from a grateful state and nation.

Another great movie about war is The Best Years of Our Lives starring the lovely Myrna Loy.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036868/

Frank Capra had a film with Oscar nominations that year but he did not win any. His film? It's A Wonderful Life.

geofflambert -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/27/2019 6:18:06 PM)

I had forgotten there was a remake (a made for TV remake, at that). But the Lew Ayres original was American.

And it's my error, it's not All's Quiet, it is All Quiet.

RangerJoe -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/27/2019 11:41:42 PM)

I repeated the error when I copied what you wrote, my fault for trusting a Gorn from the state of Misery.

I always thought of it as a German movie, as I saw the silent version with subtitles. The book is German and is one of the first to be burned in 1933.

fcooke -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/27/2019 11:53:51 PM)

So - I hate to admit it but never read the book (Thin Red line). wasn't there a TV series based on it or am I just aging faster? If so, any thoughts?

"Im Westen Nicht Neues" - "Westen" being the "Western Front".

Schindler's List
Battle of Britain
Waterloo
Conspiracy
Operation Daybreak

I've no doubt forgotten something big, but when I think of the best war movies these are recurring themes....

Conspiracy is a good production by BBC/HBO, but apart from Stanley Tucci (and probably money) it is pretty much a British movie.

Edit: looks like the screenplay was American, also the director...etc.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_(2001_film)

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: OT: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/28/2019 8:46:05 AM)

Those interested in "Conspiracy" should watch the German version: Die Wannseekonferenz (1984)

it is good and probably more accurate

RangerJoe -> RE: OT: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/28/2019 11:09:24 AM)

"Im Westen Nicht Neues" - "Westen" being the "Western Front".

Translated, In the West Nothing New but the person who translated the book changed it to All Quiet on the Western Front which then entered the English language as a phrase.

Interestingly, a lot of German veterans were in the area when they made the movie and some of them were the German officers in the film. The scene where a man grabbed barbed wire then was blown apart, actually happened and was witnessed by one of the studio workers.

Don't forget Dan Roper's favorite Kelly's Heros!

fcooke -> RE: Best American War movie? EZ Peasy (7/28/2019 8:17:51 PM)

Sar - that's just wrong. Should we add in a bit of reality TV to completely violate the Geneva Convention?

I love this movie and cannot recommend it enough to those of us who came after this time. I had never really heard of it before watching it a few years ago. Betty Davis called it the best movie ever made. Go, find it, and watch it! [&o][&o][&o]
