we're still destroying lots of enemy aircraft at Diamond Harbour and I wonder if Mundy has enabled replacements... I wouldn't bring more aircraft here, they will die before having any chance to ever get airborne...

most of the action is over for now, there are still some 100 ships at Diamond Harbour, many are hit by our naval bombardments, the IJAAF port attacks can't do any damage due to insane flak and 26,000ft attack alt (just flying those attacks to burn Allied supply as flak has quite a high supply consumption)...

the enemy attacks Calcutta for the third time and again suffers horrendous losses... we only have a tank regiment hit hard (mostly disabled) and that's it... downside is again a fort level dropped... as soon as our forts are destroyed we will start to suffer some more casualties too but that won't change the fact that Calcutta will still be a tough nut to crack...

The enemy loses more than an infantry division in squads, he is losing ships when your fighters sweep, and you occasionally hit a ship from 5 miles or 8 kilometers altitude. His supplies are being destroyed and used at a high rate. He may not be able to keep it up while you can. You may have enough engineers in Calcutta to keep at least a few levels of forts available. [&o][&o][&o]

He's lost more than 2 ID's of troops already. You should be able to keep your forts at 2, maybe 3 if you can get enough engr's there.

But, yes you are really wearing him down ... keep the flights going overhead to burn that supply. I think you have him myself, I really do. Yes, a lot of work to get there yet, but I can't see him able to reinforce or resupply. If not, irregardless of his starting strength, he won't win this ...

[&o][&o][&o]

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/20/2020 10:31:29 PM)

I means losing the strength of one division in just that one attack. If he keeps attacking and uses up his supplies, his disabled squads won't repair and he will take even heavier losses. Keep an eye on the destroyed/disabled ratio.

we had some success today but were far from what one would expect... it's just the numbers, I will never ever understand why you only get 10-20% of your bombers airborne when you meet every of those so called "conditions" except the one where you have to sacrifice your pet... and it just pisses me off again and again, no matter how many years, no matter how many turns and no matter how many discussions... it's just BS, that's not the way how war is waged, you can't just tell your officer to stay at home because there is a magic routine telling you not to fly...

It's tied to detection levels, as is nearly everything to do with the naval routine. The higher the DL, the more appropriate the strike package.

In this specific case, it seems an appropriate strike. Expecting a full sentai of 27 Frances to sortie for 3 ships in a target rich environment would be somewhat absurd.

Numbers game... totally overwhelmed routine in the Bay of Bengal and perfectly working in the Gilberts?

Or almost as if it's substantially easier in real life (as in game) to co-ordinate smaller scale operations over a smaller distance than it is to co-ordinate thousands of planes across the entire Bay of Bengal...

quote:

But it was totally wonky what the game launched in the Bay of Bengal, even though it still turns out as a disaster for the Allied, guess how it looked like if we had an average of 50% of the bombers airborne when they had a chance to strike a target?

The game is doing you a favour here. Imagine your dream scenario - everything on the KB flies, there's a massacre of Allied merchant marine. Nothing is held back, bombs, sorties and torpedoes are expended en-masse till there's none left.

Next turn an Allied CV TF zips in at high speed and the KB has nothing in the offensive arsenal.

While there would be an element of poetic justice, it would be detrimental in that the optimum way of winning a carrier clash would be wasting your opponents munitions with large fleets of sacrificial xAKs. That would be a step backwards from where we are now.

At the moment we are only at a WWII Gallipoli. The Allied landed in force, got stalled and there is nothing we can do to throw them back into the Sea at the moment. Yes, a couple of forts shouldn't be much of a problem, should not go below 3 or even 4 if we are lucky as he has no supporting airfield in range to keep us from building forts.

Worth 2 ID yes, but the losses are spread out. I'm not as confident at the moment, we got the initiative and killed an insane number of ships and aircraft but to kill his troops, we're talking about several hundred thousand troops in the pocket. Not all that easy and impossible as long as they are supplied. The Bay of Bengal is ours though, a resupply move would result in another massacre and I'm sure he knows this. If he wants to risk the previously spotted Iowa or his carriers to resupply his troops then be it, but in that case I expect to sink a big bunch of his ships then. And then he still has to break the defenses at Calcutta.

My cruisers are coming from Calcutta! [:D]

Mundy told me he has three or four CD units at Diamond Harbour and needless to say is very disappointed about their performance. CD units (can) work against invasions if you get super lucky die rolls but against naval bombardments they literally do nothing. I had games where either me or my opponent has bombarded Singapore, early on or other big calibre CD and not much happened. I've seen Hawaii being bombarded daily, bases with heavy CD in Japan or Corregidor.

The only target can be Diamond Harbour as that's where his supply sits. Bombarding Calcutta only hits his LCUs in an urban hex, total waste of shells as the damage done is minimal then.

How many more? 25? [:D]

I was counting them when everything was landing and it was 28 or 29 full sized divisions. But that's not all! There is still a total number of 158 units, uncountable numbers of Rgts, tank units and all the other stuff.

I'd say if we talk assault value then it's like 40 divisions...[sm=nono.gif]

Like I've mentioned before, have never faced or seen an invasion that was coming close to what Mundy has been throwing in here. If I wouldn't have dedicated Calcutta as my stronghold North of Burma that should act as a staging base for reinforcements for the expected battles further West he would have punched right through. What I still don't get is why he landed at Calcutta though as he had recon over my base already long before he even landed so he could have figured that there are not only a couple of low value units with the troop count alone. Guess he was just convinced nothing could stop an Army like his. The battle for Chungking could have been a lesson as it was a tough nut to crack and that's an urban light hex and "only" had lvl 6 forts. Of course he couldn't really expect to see lvl 9 forts but I have been building forts with the troops there since we took the city. Have never moved in any additional engineers though, the long time did the trick.

So instead of waging a ground war in India we are pretty much fighting at Calcutta now, which was the fight I was expecting to be the end of the Allied India campaign. Now it's the start actually.[:D]

not much else happening anymore... thought this tracker screenshot would be interesting though... just look at the victory points, skyrocketed by 10,000 while the enemy has scored 800 since the hostilities around Calcutta began... the enemy lost no less than 1,746 aircraft in the last two and a halve weeks, mostly on the ground at Diamond Harbour or on ships, roughly 300 carrier based aircraft were shot down the first two days... in return we've lost 632 aircraft which at the first moment was really striking me (thought it would have been way less) but there were these days where my LBA suizided into CAP plus KB and LBA losing aircraft to all causes... in the end the Allied paid a high price for our air losses as we have sunk no less than 240 ships and that's only what tracker says at the moment, I'm sure the actual losses are way higher, might be somewhere around 350 when the battle is over, including two USN BBs (prewar), a dozen Allied CA/CL and two dozen DDs... let's not forget all those APA/AKA he has lost... downside is the loss of one CA/CL and two or three DDs so far as we can replace aircraft and even pilots but we can't replace ships...

to sum it up, if the end result is an orderly IJ retreat out of India then it's still a huge success... at the moment I don't even want to think about what it would mean to clear the pocket at Diamond Harbour, that would surpass insanity I guess...

Will be interesting to see if the allied attacks start to crumble at Calcutta in coming weeks.
They probably dropped a few brazilian supplies with all those troops though.
What now for the allies? Surely they can’t just leave that much force there to waste away without trying to reinforce.
What do you think they will try to reinforce with and when?

Alpha77 -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/22/2020 1:34:29 PM)

I wonder what the Allied "strategy" was in this game ? Sometimes it seems he thinks to having too many ships and planes and wants to reduce their number on purpose, feeding them to the enemy with "strange" moves...[&:]

@castor troy: You reported the ASW issues in this thread and I believe this is not a thing only in this mod, I have the same in a scen2 game. All these patrols are useless except the small subchasers when they eat up enemy torpedoes. Air ASW sometimes reports hits, these seem not to sink subs but damage them, they may be withdrawn then by the enemy. But later will arrive again, so subs needs to be sunk I also do not buy into the "mission kill" thing. However it is true that a good asw/search network protects your convois. I have not lost a bigger tanker or even one of the big fast AKs to subs for quite a while. However Allied subs can sit arrogantly even in mined port hexes...

Btw. I moved some of my own subs near to bigger Allied bases, I got 2 subs hit by air both the smaller ro-class they got hit by smaller bombs from Hudsons, both received quite some damage but no danger to sink. I believe 3 hits by Hudson sized bombs will outright sink the IJN subs. 2 may be enough depending on luck of course. 1 seems to do serious enough damage for back to port. Can Allied players not report on their subs whan hit by IJ air asw?

I believe you also talked about bigger numbers of IJN mines not doing anything - I opened a thread in the main forum, 600 Japanese mines not hitting...[:@]

Check this video, quite devastating:

"Breakout from Stalingrad: German radio exchanges during Operation Winter Storm"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmiNtVTF1Z4

And here 2 comments:

"Imagine you received orders you are flying into the Stalingrad Cauldron as reinforcements for 6th Army. You just received your death warrant."

"After Winterstorm failed and the relief fronts retreated, the focus came on the Luftwaffe to fly in fresh troops for defense. Can you imagine being one of these troops? Being told that you’re to be flown into the hopeless unimaginable misery that is the Stalingrad kessel? This is why, I think at least, small decisions were made at the tactical level to delay this action as much as possible. Crew chiefs claiming junkers aren’t airworthy, quartermasters claiming supplies weren’t ready for the transfers, and captains and colonels delaying this as much as possible to avoid senselessly sending fresh terrified troops to their certain slow miserable deaths. It’s it’s own story.

In all, it paints a very dark but interesting picture of what was possible after late November/early December. Great video."

In my experience even 80+ exp does not negate the radar advantage of the Allied ships along with high speed vessels (Fletchers / PTs). In 44 also their ships come with better exp than the few IJN combat ships..But my opponent puts up a way better fight anyway...

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/22/2020 11:02:25 PM)

I wonder if the Allied theme song is the one from the show MASH.

PaxMondo -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/22/2020 11:23:34 PM)

So, looking at the units shown ... it appears to most, if not all, of the deployable US land forces available in early '44. And he is losing prodigious numbers of them.

Run this forward, even if CT were to lose Calcutta, by no means do I think that, but let's just conjecture a bit ... even if the allies take back all of India. Unless CT allows large portions of his armies to be encircled and destroyed in the process, he has already won the war here. The US reinforcements are still coming, but they start to taper off as '44 wears on. And replacement devices simply don't exist to rebuild his current losses.

A very bold move to land so aggressively at Calcutta, but this same landing near Madras using LBA cover from Ceylon would have been far more favorable. His troops would have landed cleanly, or mostly so, and then he is in a strong position to rock India hard. He cannot entrap CT unless CT makes an error as long as IJ controls the Indian ocean, but he can certainly push him completely out and into Burma/Malaysia.

Still, really worth watching, and maybe the allied replacement/reiforcement pool is bigger than I think ... I've never seen or tried such a huge gambit as the allies at this point.

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/23/2020 12:05:03 AM)

I think that the only way that he could have trapped the Japanese Army in India would have been to quickly capture all of Burma and somehow put an effective blockade of the sea lanes into place. With his previous losses and the Japanese strength, I don't think that it would be possible no completely do so. A painful withdrawl maybe, but complete destruction.

He should have landed nearer to his own bases (as I understand Ceylon is a fortress in his hands), and let loose a horde of armor units the Allies by now have. Cutting rail lines, isolating garrisons etc. India territory is huge and IJ can not defend everything.

I also have a small portion of India in my hands, Calcutta and the neighbouring bases. This is defendable better I think, all bases except one are on rail lines. But I did not chose to go further into India, especially the problem how to protect the units in the countryside from the bomber menace. LR CAP is not so effective and also tires pilots fast,

Then sweep sweep sweep he has the fine fighters now, even if the sweeps would be 1:2 in Japanese favour he accomplished more than the planes sank at see and shot to pieces at their fields (I have never seen 4E bombers transported in invasion fleets btw. one can easily fly them in IF a safe bridgehead with good airfields is established).

But maybe the Allied has some cunning plan I do not understand..[:D]

Well, that is the missing piece; ability to effect a naval blockade. The IJN owns the Indian Ocean yet. However, given a few more months, then maybe. As it is ...

That also is the issue with a landing in Burma, although to be fair, they would not have run into a fortress like Calcutta, so they likely would have taken Burma fairly quickly. However, I think the naval losses would have been even worse as the KB would have been between them and safety, but the land losses would have been less and with the IJA cut-off, conceivably they could exact a huge toll. Of course the IJ still had the sea lane option open for at least a few months.

Anyway, about as interesting an allied move as I have seen since Greyjoy's Hokkaido move...

RangerJoe -> RE: AAR 1944 (9/23/2020 12:53:16 PM)

Greyjoy's move was so much better since the Japanese were way out of position for that!

Not really skyrocketing. I've got some ships that are above 80 now (including Musashi) but most haven't gained any experience. Found out that only dealing and RECEIVING damage leads to real gains. Why? No idea.
