So far it seem quiet in the west but I am watching my rail head carefully

OK the Japanese have stalled off NZ my reinforcements are ashore 6th Aus and 2nd NZ are close to Perth and so far so good

Ceylon the Japanese have 25k men ashore at Koggala but I have them stalled with 18th British and 9th Indian Divs holding them

Be sure to guard the rail base east of Perth (Cunderdin?) - the Japanese love to take it with paras to isolate Perth.

Andy,

Desmond??

I cant find any town in NZ of that name, should it be Queenstown??

BillBrown -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/12/2019 9:26:19 PM)

He is playing a new scenario with many more bases

waihi -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/12/2019 11:10:45 PM)

As a kiwi living close by, it is definitely Queenstown, no Desmond known as a town anywhere there.

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:05:08 AM)

Lt Colonel Ellsworth and his troopers in their mix of Humbar and Rolls Royce Armoured Cars of the Nelson/Marlborough Mtd Regiment not only recaptured Invercargill they also led the victorious forces of the 1st Otago Bn and 1st Southland Bn as part of the NZ 3rd Infantry Bde in recapturing QUEENSTOWN and encircling the Japanese invaders.

In the north Island 8th NZ Bde supported by 7th and 8th NZ Bdes and 41st US Div eliminated the Japanese presence at Palmerston North #

For 24 hours the North Island was free of Invaders and then....

Ground combat at Tauranga (116,187)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 10022 troops, 26 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 459

Defending force 1401 troops, 26 guns, 2 vehicles, Assault Value = 45

Japanese adjusted assault: 192

Allied adjusted defense: 6

Japanese assault odds: 32 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Tauranga !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(-), preparation(-)
Attacker: leaders(-)

Japanese ground losses:
403 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 37 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
957 casualties reported
Squads: 31 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 19 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 2 disabled
Guns lost 21 (20 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Vehicles lost 2 (2 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
4th Division

Defending units:
N Force Detachment

This is a major problem as this is a full Div with support and supply and my troops need time to refit after the battle of Palmerston North
Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:08:01 AM)

Oh and just after I started thinking I meight need to abandon the beaches at Koggala the Japanese landed behind me at Jaffna time to run for Colombo

JeffroK -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:13:15 AM)

Bugger, Hope you recapture Tauranga soon.

I'll be there this time next month!!

JeffroK -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:16:50 AM)

In your earlier nasty scenario I managed to hold Ceylon, used 6 & 7 Aussie plus 18 Brit Divs as well as the Indian Bdes. I set up a base in southern India and flew in lots of troops and supplies. (Killed at least 6 IJA Divs, the AI doesnt do a Dunkirk)

Just when you think you are OK, there is another landing where you only have an ISF battalion.[:D]

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:25:34 AM)

Unfortunately 6th Australian Div is in Australia
7th Australian has been retained as the backbone of my Chittagong defences
and 18th british Div got chewed up by the heavy arty and BB bombardments on the beaches of Koggala

I have 18th British managed to extract a weak ahead of the Japanese main attack on Koggala so recovering
9th Indian Div in so so shape

and

about 6 Independent Bdes ( a mix of Indian and Dutch Regts)

So effectively about 4 Divisions digging in for a long siege at Colombo

The only good thing is the massed AA I have assembled I am not going to try and contest air superiority my AA Guns will take a fearsome toll of any CAS attacks

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 12:26:52 AM)

Do the Japanese get more anti-tank firepower in 1942 in this mod? If not, you should have them stymied.

traskott -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 7:26:36 AM)

It's a draw. Supplies will decide the winner.

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 3:43:16 PM)

lol well we are now at the end of May

Ceylon Theatre the siege continues and I am trying to sneak supply cnvoys in under cover of 200+ fighter based at Colombo and Trivandrum - I must keep my supply levels high

Australia the Japanese have taken NW Australia and have just landed at Caranvon as well as advancing on the Darwin rail line

In NZ 3 further landings at different spots its starting to feel like wack a mole

Hamilton holds, I retook Tauranga but the Japanese have landed at Gisborne, Warangui and Greymouth - they are contained except at Greymouth where they have managed to expand

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 3:52:06 PM)

Normanton/Cairns/Townsville watching the NE for landings
2nd Aus Corps (51st Highland Div, 1st Australian Div, 2/9th Armoured Regt, 2/7th Armoured Regt)

2nd Australian Army (Perth and the West)
3rd Aus Corps (2nd & 3rd Aus Div, 11th Indian Div and 30th Aus Bde)

PaxMondo -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 3:55:05 PM)

Yikes, you need heavy US div's in both NZ and OZ … only May? You haven't been able to collect enough PP's to buy enough out, let alone get them on a boat.

You gave yourself some extra PP's though? How many?

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 4:36:30 PM)

Errr actually not any despite giving myself the variant points I forgot to apply them the scenario doh so I am stuck with 50

Its not something you can edit either so I gave myself a few more air toys to compensate for the lost points as those can be edited in progress e.g. better FAA aircraft earlier Seafire IIc from 6/42 and Fireflies from 6/42 and I accelerated the Barracudas a little nothing earth shattering

Andy Mac -> RE: Preparing for the Battle of Dunedin (10/13/2019 4:40:48 PM)

Bugger bugger bugger

I keep the RN Carrier Group at Perth for the last 6 weeks no sign of any Raiders send them north towards Addu Atoll and 2 days later raiders crucify one of my convoys - not my finest hour !!!

Andy Mac -> RE: YAMATO sighted and engaged most closely (10/13/2019 5:56:43 PM)

Back to the Battle of NZ I cannot keep Wellington or Auckland safe my AA guns more or less make random raids unprofitable but if I bring in convoys the Japanese pay the butchers bill to massacre my convoys

I also lost the battle of Gisborne where 2 of my NZ Cavalry Regts and the 87th US Mountain Regt were routed out of the base and the Japanese retook Tauranga as well forcing the already retreated force back again

There are 2.5 Japanese Divisions ashore on the North Island and at least 1 on the South Island

I have 27th US Inf Div, 3rd and 12th NZ Bdes and 4 Cavalry Regts - 3rd and 12th Bdes are now very experienced at full TOE Bdes but the TOE is still that of a milita Bde with only 3 companies of 3 platoons in each Bn

Both Bdes get the option of upgrading to full regular Bde Groups in 6 months but I probably could use that extra man and firepower now !!

In the north Island I have 41st US Div, 2nd US Marine Div, 1st Army Tank Bde, 8th NZ Bde and the remnants of the 87th Mountain Regt as regular troops

Also 4 Militia Bdes and the various NZ Cavalry Regts - not quite as experienced as their counterparts on the South Island as the regulars have carried more of the fight but all militia Bdes are at least as good as normal trained troops

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: YAMATO sighted and engaged most closely (10/13/2019 6:14:30 PM)

In 5 days I need o make a decision about my NZ Cav Regts

At the moment they consist of a TOE of 20 Armoured Cars, 24 Motorised Infantry Sections, and a Mortar Platoon and their are 9 of them

In five days I have the option of changing 6 of them into Recce Regts 24 Armoured Cars, 15 Motorised Infantry Sections and 15 Stuart Light Tanks and the other 3 into Armoured Regiments with 30 Stuarts and 15 Valentine III Heavy Tanks

The Valentines I can find but that many Stuart Light Tanks is going to be a problem as the same tank is used in India and Australia and my pool is empty so while I would love to do the TOE (and if the Japanese had not invaded NZ this is the point when the excess Infantry is used to upgrade the TOE of the Bdes to regulars but because they invaded I got enough reinforcements to do that a while back)

I am tempted not to do the conversion I simply don't have the assets to make it worthwhile at this time

Andy Mac -> RE: YAMATO sighted and engaged most closely (10/13/2019 6:27:58 PM)

Its time for my mandatory 4 day turn on v hard difficulty this could be very very painfull

Andy Mac -> RE: YAMATO sighted and engaged most closely (10/13/2019 11:10:56 PM)

early july I am in better shape than the map would indicate but the Japanese have landed many places
