Not really I did too good a job when I helped the AI Ceylon is in serious trouble most of my Bdes have been hammered by arty to the point of ineffectiveness I don’t see how Colombo will last more than another month I have best part of 4 wrecked Divisions trying to hold on I have air superiority over Colombo itself and plenty of supplies but my forts are gone and the pounding is every day May have to try an evacuation under fire I genuinely don’t think I can hold unless I can bring in 2 fresh Divs minimum NZ north island I have them contained but supply levels are dropping and they have 3 full Divisions on the Hamilton front and another 2 plus at New Plymouth and Palmerston North South Island is getting cleaned up as is the SLOC to New Zealand Australia my Armour is ready to counter attack out of Alice Springs and retake the North Imphal/Assam under massive pressure I am not sure I can hold Overall struggling to even contemplate counterattacks whilst under this much pressure

I have been kicked out of Ceylon which I am still shocked by Imphal is under huge pressure North Island NZ is under huge pressure with my Army split in 2 at Auckland and Palmerston North Australia I just attacked Tennant Creek I took the base but 2 days later had to pull my armour out ahead of a Japanese Counter attacks USN has retaken Tahiti and is about to retake Johnson Island and the Marquesas

I am actually not sure why I am fighting so hard for Imphal I think in this game an overland attack into North Burma is a pipe dream I need to fight in places I can isolate

Thoughts about the scen so far. Overland into Burma from India is all about supply; can you push enough into Burma. Then, with the opposing forces you have created, it becomes whether you can get enough force into theatre. As you note, I'm not sure you can as the IJ have much better LOC and much better forces than the Indians. I would think instead of forcing in, just bottle it up and force the IJ to attempt landings in India where you have the advantage in LOC. Ceylon is all about being able to isolate it. Whoever has the bigger/badder navy will win. Losing Ceylon isn't great, but I don't think the AI can take advantage of it as a player would. So, I wouldn't be too worked up about it. As long as the IJ Navy can control the Indian Ocean, Ceylon is theirs, right? Cede that, and work on driving their landings along the coast back into the sea. Eventually, late '43 arrives along with the USN and you can turn the tables. New Zealand can't be saved. The All-Blacks are going to have to hide up in the hills for a year or so. I can't see getting enough there soon enough to stop it. OZ looks to be the real challenge. Melborne to Sydney cannot fall, but keeping it intact looks tough and that is where I would put all my effort. I don't think Darwin nor Perth can be held, but need to trade space for time. If Perth can be held even into June 42, I think you can get enough supply and assets in place to hold OZ until late '42 when the USN attacks from Cape Town. This won't be easy, those raiders you have cooked up are tough and everywhere. A lot of ships will be lost trying to smuggle supply/fuel into OZ in '42 from the Cape. Anyway, late '42 arrives and I'm thinking a mega convoy (series of convoys) escorted by the full USN. At least 6 ID's, all the 4E's that can move, all the fighters that can move … etc. The goal, take Perth back and open the LOC to the Cape. Once that is back open, OZ is safe. Then its about re-taking everything lost. NZ would likely be first for me as it open up the LOC direct from the West Coast. And then resolve India etc. You've setup a good, nasty scenario here. Enough distractions occur that it dilutes what little strength the allies might have throughout early '42 allowing the AI to advance almost unimpeded. PI, DEI, NZ, North OZ, Burma, Ceylon … yeah, you've got the AI really setup to accomplish most of this by mid-42. Great job!!!

Thinking about it, another way to go is to say "Forget y'all, I'm goin' huntin'!" and instead of rescuing OZ in late '42, go straight to Hokkaido in mid '43 and start shutting down the economy. You have to wait until you have Corsairs and 'Cats to take Hokkaido, and then you will need 'Bolts to help hold it. Once you land in Hokkaido in '43, I don't think the AI can eject you.

I am thinking of restarting I am now at end of November and I have identified a lot of AI improvements Nothing that’s a show stopper so wouldn’t impact on games in progress but a few nice improvements that I may want to process and restart I am also.increasingly pissed off by not being able to afford to set my Corps up properly through lack of PP !!

Andy, I restarted on version 5 doing 1 day turns on Hard with no goodies or PPs for the Allied forces. I only allowed naval forces at sea to plot moves and thus used the non-Historical Start. I'm up to April 13th. My game played out differently than yours, which I think was 1 version later. Midway did not fall at all, don't know why. Bad die roll on landing?. At Johnson Island I was planning on joining up my forces, so I stopped the seizure of that island by taking out forces landing on Dec 8th. I also held on to Hilo, by sending Amphibious and Surface Forces there on December 8th. Also, I lost no BBs in the pearl harbor attack. Either luck or something different in v5? I have carefully read the intelligence reports and met several landings with small cruiser forces. In the south pacific that slowed the capture of Fiji and Nomea. I abandoned PM and starting relocating forces on turn one. Moved these to Portland Roads and Cooktown. I also took all the "movable" forces from Darwin and sent to Noumea/Koumac quickly enough to greatly slow the Japanese expansion. Seeing the intel regarding Ceylon, I started to withdrawl, but will not get much out. The game is great. I've got a strong string of basis from Pearl Harbor the Pago Pago, and am very close to landing on Tahati to retake it. Also I've had no problem getting massive supplies to Oz from Cape Town, but I waited until I lost a few AKs to a Raider and sent a British Carrier force. The raiders were gone but I found a German Carrier instead which promptly sunk my carrier and some escorts, but only after it lost a lot of planes and then left the area, so I simply flooded the sea lanes with AKs while the raiders were away. I'll get maybe 500K+ supplies and 100K+ fuel moved and then stop until I can fight the returning raiders again. I figure the lost carrier (British) was a tactical loss, but I got almost all my AKs and some TKs sitting in Capetown to Oz, and most are now back. The think what would hurt me the most, would be if the AI Japanese Raiders had follow up waves. Once you beat the initial lot, your good for a while. Also, the many landings in the South Pacific without carrier support (or only weak support) can be slowed and hurt a lot with a minimal number of allied surface ships. CVs sailing around the South Pacific in Feb/March would really hurt. Also, losing 1 US CV to clear the sea lines between CA and Hawaii does not hurt that much if they don't have much follow up. Thanks again for this great scenario for solitaire play.

The German Carrier has a LOT of Stuka's. And I was not expecting it either. So far I've sunk A few German ships and loads of U-boats.

Thanks for the feedback trying to improve the scenario based on my own playthrough and what others have observed so many thanks Remember this is designed to be utterly gloriously nuts with no bearing on history whatsoever What I found early on was it is a challenge but my biggest issue is Allied Airpower is irrelevant given how strong the AI is you cannot use aircraft unless its a specific task ie suppress base X - attrition favours the AI to such an extent that the only option in many case is to keep airpower out of range and only use them for specific missions

The allies had the assets early on to better resist, but only if they had been under a single command (like a player). The reality was there were 9 (and counting general like MacArthur, add another dozen or so) commands that simply did not cooperate. Yes, they were on the same side, but they were too prideful to either share or ask for help. Hence, the IJ was able to pick them off quite easily as it could mass its strength at a single point of attack. I think that is what your Ironman scenarios like this bring … they bring the solo player back closer to the actual mindset that they commanders in '41 had to deal with: too many fires and not nearly enough of anything to fight with. They aren't historically accurate with respect to force pools, but they are accurate in re-creating the frustration and fear that guys like Nimitz must have felt in Jan 42 … Awesome.

Andy, In late April 42 I noticed ships loitering NNW of Pearl Harbor. I sent out a CA/CL/DD surface action group to hunt and on 5/1/42 I sunk 8 AOs NNE of Pearl Harbor. This looks like a repeat send out of a massive fleet refuel, perhaps for KB, that should not have happened. KB is busy supporting the conquest of Ceylon. Of course I supposed I may find the entire Krigsmarine at San Francisco in a few terns. Maybe they were refueling something I have not found. Hopefully not the German CV I encountered earlier in the Indian Ocean.
