Never use patrol arcs for ship-based nav search. For general land-based nav search as well, it's very effective to leave it to normal full circumference search without arcs if you simply want general spotting and warning. However, if you want to pay attention to or saturate a particular area of interest with nav-search coverage, patrol arcs are very handy.
