rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/6/2020 4:57:45 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Weather.

{Well so much for my plan for declaring war on the Soviet Union this turn due to storms in the north temperate. However; these storms do negate allied air cover for convoys at sea. But at the cost of not getting the -1 to -2 search modifier for enemy CP's at sea. So while it's harder to find the CP's if you do find, and the allies don't, you save the 4 SP's required to force a sub combat.}

brian brian -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/6/2020 5:29:15 PM)

I am playing the new rules these days, where the SUB war is completely different and the whole game, even on land, is a new game as a result. So I have a new, deep interest in SUB tactics in the game - they really work to keep the Allies off balance, doing more Naval impulses than they really want, and are well worth the Axis action limit + BP investment.

Just wondering why you didn't intercept the RN SCS sailing through the Faeroes Gap, one at a time? Best Case - the Allies risk moving past a successful intercept (unlikely here probably) - you get a big dice split - or, you get just an ordinary dice split but now you get to maybe roll the U-Boats into a combat vs the CP before the Allies have assembled all of their escort forces.

Here, the RN probably had enough in Gibraltar to send to North Atlantic if too many ships coming out of Liverpool got intercepted and stopped in Faeroes, but forcing them to decide to stop or keep going in Faeroes might have messed up their overall escort plans for the turn. ?

Probably should have but didn't in order to keep the game moving.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

Manchuria.

The Soviets look to be bugging out. Japan's plan is for the total recapture of Manchuria and capture of Soviet Asia.

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

China.

It's more of an eyesore than an actual problem, but I would really like to throw the Chinese out of Nanning, capture that city and clean up my lines in Southern China.

Also, my long term plan is to keep up ground strike against Chinese HQ's (i.e., Mao and Chaing). With no oil, once they're flipped they'll stay flipped until China can get a hold of some oil, which may not be for a while.

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:34:24 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

East Africa.

The CW has two HQ's on the map, both of which are in East Africa. They have a 3rd HQ, Alexander HQ-I, coming out of production next turn (Mar/Apr 1941).

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:39:34 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

The Italian Coast.

The Italian's grip on the Med has shrunk to the Italian Coast and that's the plan for as long as the Italians can hold on to that sea and to Italy itself.

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:41:43 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

Battle of the Atlantic (1/2).

Axis subs last impulse (non-phasing), created a lot of disruption to CW production and convoy lines due to their success in the Faeores Gap.

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:50:51 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. Pre-Impulse (PI).

Battle of the Atlantic (2/2).

North Atlantic.

While the CW definitely has the organized CP's to replace their losses there (i.e., Faeores Gap) and fix their production the axis hope to derail that by some extent by going after their convoys in the North Atlantic. With storms raging in the North Atlantic, allied aircraft can't fly meaning that the axis won't have to use 4 SP's to force a sub combat if they manage to surprise the allies there. However, storms reduce the chance of finding by 1 and also negate the +2, in this case, search number modifier due to allied convoys.

But I've found that sub warfare in MWiF takes persistence to be successful and that's what I intend to do. Continue to got after the allied convoy lines and also continue to build subs.

Faeroes Gap.

As in the North Atlantic, storms prevent allied planes from flying but also make search harder (+1 to search roll due to storms & no +1 added to search number due to allied convoys).

With only 2 CP's left in the sea are the axis will not risk initiating this impulse but will wait and as the non-phasing player next allied impulse (which will also be storms) will initiate if and when the allies sail in replacement CP's.

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:55:44 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5.

[ax] Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5.
No DOW's. No special actions. No alignments.
Actions. Japan - land. Germany - land. Italy - combine.
End of Turn Chance. 0%.

[ax] Naval Air. None.

[ax] Naval Movement. None.

[ax] Naval Combat.
Three sea areas which the Italians can potentially initiate.
(1) North Atlantic. Yes.
(2) Faeores Gap. No combat. (Allies can't).
(3) Italian Coast. No combat. (Allies can't).

[ax] Naval Combat. North Atlantic.
(1) Storms. No air or air reactions possible.
(2) Italian sub group 5046 (3-box) initiates.
(3) Axis commit their subs.
(4) Search. Axis=1, Allied=7.
(5) Axis only find (3 & 2-boxes), select allies in 0-box, which gives the axis 9 SP's.

[ax] Naval combat type. Surface or sub?
(1) If surface, then axis have 15 surface vs 14 ships (X, D, A initial risk); however the allies would have 20 surface vs 4 ships (X, A).
(2) If sub, then axis have 8 sub vs 8 ships (i.e., 15 CP's/2) (X, D) and the allies would have 11 ASW vs 2 subs (X, 3A).

[ax] Naval Combat. Sub.
(1) The axis objective for their subs and surface raiders is to sink allied convoys and; therefore, option (2) above (i.e., sub combat) is their choice.
(2) The axis choose a sub combat.
(3) The axis accept their initial risk of X, 2A.
(4) 8 of 9 SP's used to shift allied CP losses from X, D (i.e., 3 CP's sunk) to 2X, 2D, 2A (i.e., 6 CP's sunk and 2 aborted).

[ax] Naval Combat. North Atlantic. Axis Damage Resolution.
(1) X, 2A vs 1 German u-boat and 1 Italian sub.
(2) X vs U-boat 4839=1, sunk.
(3) With 2A's left Italian sub 5046 is aborted and will return St-Nazaire, France.
(4) Allied CP risk 2X, 2D, 2A (6 CP's sunk & 2 aborted).
(5) 2 NED CP's sunk, 4 of 5 CW conquered CP's sunk, 2 CP's aborted.

[ax] Well the program let me pick the 2 NED CP's to destroy but after that took over and decided the rest. Really doesn't matter as the remaining CP's for all purposes are CW CP's.

[ax] The axis stay. I assume the allies do to? Aborted CP's to where?

[al] Aborted cps to Liverpool unless they can be intercepted, in which case Halifax.

[al] And, yes, Allies stay.

North Atlantic. (1/2).

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 9:58:51 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. (continued).

[ax] Naval Combat. North Atlantic. Round 2.
(1) Both sides stay.
(2) Storms. No air or air reactions possible.
(3) Search. Axis=2, Allied=1. Both find.
(4) RN 4-box vs 2 German surface raiders in 3-box.
(5) RN gets 2 SP's.

[al] After three consecutive bad search results for the British in the Atlantic, thank goodness.

[ax] Initial risks.
(6) Axis have 9 surface vs 3 RN ships (D, 2A).
(7) Allies have 9 surface vs 2 KM ships (D, A).
(8) RN has 2 SP's and can use them to decrease RN risk to 2A or increase KM risk to D, 3A. Which would you like to do?

[al] Increase KM risk, please.

[ax] copy that.

[ax] Assume you wish to put your D on CA Gloucester (weakness of the 3 RN CA's)?

[al] Yes, please.

[al] As many As as possible on Gloucester as well. Any remaining As after that, use your discretion.

[ax] RN Damage Resolution.
(1) D vs CA Gloucester=8, aborted.
(2) A vs CA Norfolk=9, 1/2 aborted.
(3) A vs CA Edinburgh=2, aborted.
RN damage control was highly effective.

[ax] KM Damage Resolution.
(1) D vs CA Admiral Hipper=5, damaged.
(2) A vs (damaged CA Admiral Hipper=3, aborted.
(3) With 2 As left, BB Scharnhorst aborted and returns to Brest.

[ax] Both sides stay but with neither side higher than the 1-box during storms then nobody is able to find. Thus concludes this latest rounds of naval combat in the North Atlantic.

[ax] Aborted CP's to Liverpool through the Bay of Biscay. Storms there prevent the German Nav from "flying" and allow the aborted CP's safe passage through the sea area.

[ax] Where do the two aborted RN CA's go?

[ax] In order to keep things moving I'm aborting the 2 CA's to Liverpool too. I can move them later if that's not ok.

North Atlantic. (2/2).

rkr1958 -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/7/2020 10:01:14 PM)

Turn 9. Jan/Feb 1941. Axis #5. (continued).

[ax] Ground Strike. Japan x 1. 105 mm art (3 TAC) vs Natchi 3-stack in Nanning.
(1) vs 6th Inf=8, missed.
(2) vs 1st Cav=8, missed.
(3) vs 4th Mot div=7, missed.

{I just realize that if I had flipped the 4th Mot corps then China due to lack of oil would have been able to reorg him, unless they used an HQ which I doubt they would.}

Ground Strike. Nanning.

(1) von Leeb HQ-I. France 55,24 to Poland 51, 47.
(2) Guderian HQ-A. Yug 60,46 to lasi, Romania.
(3) 50 mm AT. Vienna, Austria to Lasi, Romania.

[ax] Land Combat. none.

[ax] Air Rebase. Japan x 2.
(1) H6K ATR. Fukuko to Canton.
(2) G3M2 (Nell) Nav3. Saesbo to Haichow.

{Two more planes that will be used to continue to ground strike Mao and Chaing until both are flipped.}

[ax] Air Rebase. Italy x 1.
(1) CR 42 FTR2. Hanover to Warsaw.

[ax] Air Rebase. Germany x 4.
(1) Ju 87B Stuka. Hun 59,44 to Rom 58,53.

Courtenay -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/8/2020 3:42:07 AM)

I would get a unit to defend Albania. There is no reason to give the place to the Italians for free.

Commonwealth: Naval
Free France: Pass
United States: Combined
Soviet Union: Land

[al] Naval Operations

Port Attacks
(1) CW launches a port attack on Trieste from HMS Eagle.
Surprise rolls are It 7, CW 3. CW has 4 surprise off the dice, but Italy has 3 off the box (5 box for major port vs CW in 2 box), so 1 net surprise for CW.
CW inflicts 2 aborts, both of which are applied to convoy points.

Naval Air
None

Naval Movement
(2) USS New Mexico, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania sail from San Diego to 0 box West Coast.
(3) 6 cps and 2 trs sail from Liverpool to 0 box Faeroes Gap.
(4) 4 cps sail from Halifax to 0 box Cape Verde Basin.
(5) 1 cp sails from Bombay to 0 box Persian Gulf.

(6) CW can initiate, but won't, in North Atlantic and Faeroes Gap.
(7) CW initiates in Italian Coast.

[al] Naval Operations
Naval Combat - Italian Coast

[ax] No axis air reaction.

[al] You read my mind - was just about to ask.

HMS Dorsetshire initiates the combat.
Search rolls are CW 7, It 5. No naval combat.

[ax] :)

[al] Naval Operations
Non-Phasing Combat
(8) In the storms, the subs in the North Atlantic 1 box can't initiate.
(9) That leaves Faeroes Gap as a possible combat location. Will the Axis initiate?

[ax] Yes.

[ax] Initiate with a German sub.

[al] Naval Combat - Faeroes Gap
German subs initiate combat. Axis subs are committed.
Search rolls are Axis 10, CW 3. CW 4 box finds subs with 8 surprise points.

Seems like somebody at Dönitz's HQ was a little careless with their transmissions.

[ax] :(

[al] There's no thought of using the surprise to avoid combat. It's a surface combat.

Initial damage profiles are:
- Subs inflict 2A on Royal Navy.
- RN inflicts 1D, 1A on subs.

British use all surprise to increase damage to subs to 1X, 1D, 2A.

[al] Commonwealth damage profile is 2A.
1st A on HMS York: saving throw is 6; she's aborted.
2nd A on HMS Glorious: saving throw is 9; 1/2 abort.

[ax] German aborts go to Brest. Italians to St-Nazire
X on Italian sub.
D on German u-boat.
A on Italian sub if not sunk.
2nd A on Italian sub if still around.

[al] Axis damage profile is 1X, 1D, 2A.
X on the Italian subs: saving throw is 6; sunk.
D on the German subs: saving throw is 3; damaged.
With 2As remaining, the German subs are aborted to Brest and the Construction Pool.

[al] HMS York, for her part, aborts to Liverpool.

[al] Pretty deadly turn for merchant mariner and submariner both.

[ax] Yes, as was the actual battle of the Atlantic.

Faeores Gap.

[al] I might as well see if the turn ends?

[ax] Yes please.

[al] End of Turn
Turn ends on a roll of 1.
End of turn roll is 3. Turn continues.

[al] Weather
It's not getting any better.

[al] Weather
Weather roll is 10, becoming 11 thanks to the prior die roll modifier.

That's B/B/B/R/St/R.

[ax] Yikes.

brian brian -> RE: Axis Only. Ronnie vs Composer99. (3/8/2020 6:17:09 PM)

As you will soon discover while tangling with the Red Army, Italians SUBs are far more valuable than the German ones.
