For example, why did these hikers have no weapons on them other than hunting knives? Didn't anyone get charged with bringing a gun of some sort? Into the wilderness? Hmmm ...

I'm not saying the data is flawed; I'm saying it is not by itself conclusive. Every explanation that has been suggested requires some degree of speculation. We can choose which cause we feel to be less unlikely. I mentioned the Titanic as an example of a very unlikely event that could have been a similar mystery. If I had to pick one explanation, I would go with the mini-avalanche theory, too.
