So I thought I'd download, patch and give this ago again after many years.

Problem is the game does not even run on Windows 10.

No errors when trying to run from the menu, in fact nothing happens at all. When you try to execute any of the exe's in the game I always get this.

Any work around or is JTCS dead now an no longer works on modern systems running Windows 10?

Also, of note I am running on a 4k monitor maybe the code is so old it just does not like windows 10 nor 4k monitors?

The event log shows this:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Matrix Games\John Tiller's Campaign Series\West Front\west front.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Any ideas on how to fix that?

I'll be installing the game on my new windows 10 machine, I'll let you know what steps I did to get it running. (Hopefully)

It plays fine on my W10 machine, no problems. However I installed it a few years ago...

Well, my install process was as follows.

Download and unzip this:

JohnTillerCampaignSeries-SetupRelease-V1DR.exe

Run the executable.

Download and unzip this:

JohnTillerCampaignSeries-UpdateDR-v202.exe

Run the executable.

After that, I launched the game with no issues.

Side by side error is often resolved by installing the MSVC++ 2008 redistributable again.

Most likely, you don't have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, available here:

x86 (32 bit)
x64 (64 bit)

Make sure you get the right version for your system architecture (32 vs. 64 bit)!

Thanks, well what I did was as follows.

Downloaded from Matrix the two files (the latest installer and 2.02 update) and installed the game and then the patch. Tried to launch the game and no-go. Then I downloaded the 64-bit 2008 C++ redistribute installed that and again no-go!

Game does not work on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

I don't understand how you can get the game to work while it does nothing on my machine. (When clicking WF/EF/RS etc., nor from their own exe's), nothing happens, nada, zilch.

Strange, since I have GG WitE/WitW, Decisive Campaigns (all three of them), TOAW IV, Steel Panthers WW2/MBT, Warplan, World in Flames, Panzer Korps, and some older games like DG CWIE2 installed and running with no issues.

So for me it just seems that JTCS no longer works on Windows 10 64-bit Pro.

Stumped.

This is my system, so yes, it does. Just have to figure out why it isn't working with your installation.

Do you have multiple drives?

If so, try installing it on a secondary drive.

I installed it in E:/games/jtcs, for example.

I only have 1 drive. I installed it in:

C:\Matrix Games\John Tiller's Campaign Series

For giggles, try to install it in:

C:\games\John Tiller's Campaign Series

Don't forget to make sure your 2.02 UPDATE gets installed in THAT location

This time I ran the installer and the update as admin and from the game menu when I click on play East Front/West Front/Rising Sun absolutely nothing happens at all.

When I check the event log I see this:

I am on a 64-bit machine, why is it tryig to run or find something that is win32?

Maybe JTCS can't run on windows 64 bit?

It can because I have a windows 64 machine that I just built and it runs perfectly fine.

So, there is something weird with your set up that we are trying to troubleshoot.

Hmm, that SIDE_BY_SIDE error is usually becomes the Microsoft package wasn't installed correctly

I'm with the OP on this one.

running a 64 bit machine with Windows 10, I followed Jason's directions.

1) uninstalled all old versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package
2) made sure Tiller Campaign series was uninstalled.
3) reinstalled Visual C 64 bit
4) installed JohnTillerCampaignSeries-SetupRelease-V1DR.exe in default folder C:\Matrix Games\John Tiller's Campaign Series
5) installed JohnTillerCampaignSeries-UpdateDR-v202.exe in default folder C:\Matrix Games\John Tiller's Campaign Series

6|) launched the game from the shortcut provided on desktop.
7) hit play buton East Front -- nothing happens
hit play button West Front -- nothing happens
hit play button Rising Sun -- nothing happens.

Gents, this is too difficult to get going. Why is this so hard?
Should I give up and just play Middle East and wait for version 2? Because this is the third time I've tried this since I had to update to Windows 10. It's possible I've done something wrong.
On the other hand, this install is not exactly a no brainer like every other game I've purchased (most of them on steam)

Why not just give us one download that works like a charm, rather than this three step procedure that doesn't (except for Jason apparently :) ???
Can't this be done? It's a bit silly experienced players like Zovs and less so myself, have problem installing this game.

Hmm, are you having the same errors as the OP?

Have you tried adjusting the compatibility settings like in the link I posted? Or?

thanks for responding and I am having the same errors.

As you suggested, I did all the compatibility changes, including all the ones for the east front exe subroutines. Because doing the autorun change alone, did not work.

running the main program from autorun.exe.

The East Front button, when pushed, does nothing.

Look, I'd like to play this game to track some YouTube videos both you and I are watching with Good Captain. But if I can't run the game, I'll just have to play Middle East and wait for the new game to come out -- too bad but that seems to be what i am stuck with unless you can think of anything else!

I am not sure that you need to install necessarily the right version for your system architecture (32 vs. 64 bit) for the old games.
I guess the game was developed in 32bits and not 64bits at the time.
I remember having a problem with an old game and the 64 bit version gave nothing but the 32 bit version allowed to run the old game on my 64bit system (?)
Maybe we should try the 32-bit version if the 64-bit version doesn’t work ?

PS: no problem for me with JTCS on Windows 10

And POOF! East Front (aka 1998 from TalanSoft, lol, jk it's Matrix's version but older folks may get the joke, lol) is working!!!

Thanks Jason for your attempts to trouble shoot but it was terminators hint on the 32 bit stuff....

to confirm, the 32 bit version worked right away with the settings for windows XP in place. I didn't have to reboot or reinstall the games.

And to emphasize: Yes, MS VC++ 2008 distro is the first culprit to check should the game not launch, or it is reporting the side by side error.
