My experience exactly. Once you get upgraded artillery, you can take virtually any hex, as can the AI. The key is having reserves in place to counterattack and retake the hex. I try to place my reserves behind hexes attack-able on three sides. It's harder to make a two hex attack, and when you advance, even if you have a fresh unit with sufficient APs to advance and entrench, it's going to get hit from four sides, one of them inevitably un-entrenched.
