The Italian roll is 13 and CW has to abort front fighter or bomber. CW aborts the fighter.
The CW roll is 8 and it has no effect.
CW aborts the portstrike.

The allied planes lands on their respective CV-ship and the Italians fighter returns to Turin.

Declarations of War and Alignments: None

Japan: Land
Germany: Land
Italy: Combined

Port Attack: None
Naval Air: None

Naval Movement:
Italy

A convoy moves into the Italian Coast. In order to move the game along I assume the French will seek to intercept. There is no reason not to.

The search roll was 8 so the convoy was undetected. However, I can't then move it further (must be in the presence of the enemy rule perhaps?). So that was a waste of time and the convoy remains in the Italian coast.....

But worse, the French now get a throw at initiating combat themselves....

The throws are 4 and 4 and so the Italians are surprised (4 surprise points).

I increase the damage to the maximum and another Italian convoy is consigned to the bottom of the sea and the other aborted. That was an expensive mistake.

Land Combat:
Germany

One Attack announced against Warsaw

HQ Support from von Rundstedt

Japan

One attack announced against a Chinese CAV
No Ground Support
No HQ Support

Both attacks are +17. I take these in the order of the program - Chinese first then Warsaw.

I assume Assault for Warsaw as there is no where to retreat to. What about China - Assault or Blitzkrieg?

The throw was a 15 and the poles lose two units with the third shattered. But as there was no retreat path, the third unit is also destroyed.

Yes, there was a retreat path: Onto the units to the southeast, for an over stack, and then one more hex southeast. Of course, since the die roll was a 23, it makes no difference which table was chosen.

There was a dieroll about Belgium that I do not understand.
What does it mean?

I can take this one. Ignore it.

This roll is for our 4-player game when Germany DOW Belgium and warspite1 should have put in our French players email but accidently (apparently) put in your email there instead.

So wrong player and wrong game.

The assault and no retreat comment was for the German attack on Belgium. And the Poles had nowhere to go.

Gotcha, i was very confused and had to look at the map several times to see what I had missed [:)]

Did I read the rules wrong? If units are totally and completely surrounded are they able to leapfrog over the enemy to safety?

No, you are correct.

I think that there is a misunderstanding here. Courtenay is talking about the Chinese assault where a retreat path was available. While warspite1 correctly concluded that the Poles had no retreat path.
