ORIGINAL: obvert London report. Here at home. Again. As most of us are. One trip out today. Went to the park, which is a huge luxury. A little place called Wick Wood, a triangle of birch and alder between a Hackney Marshes, the A-12 highway and the Regent's Canal. We took up walking sticks and played hide and seek, and then rode out to tour the ducks in the Lea river on the way home. I found out a student has had Covid, and her whole family has now become ill. Worrying. She looked concerned on our Zoom call today. Also, a 13 year old boy died today in a London hospital. Some good news is that new British made ventilators are scheduled to be sent to hospitals next week. The NHS Nightingale Hospital at the Excel convention Center is nearly online, with up to 4,000 beds. The briefing tonight again offered weak responses to why more tests are not being done. They said it is a shortage of chemical reagents to do the lab analysis. I can't imagine that's the whole story if Germany is at ~ 500k tests and are shooting for 200k/day by late April. The curve of hospital entries seems to be flattening as deaths continue up, but it seems like the lockdown is working. We had some outside work scheduled on out house, re-pointing some bricks and taking out paving. They called to say suppliers have now stopped shipping building materials, so that industry will now be shut down too. Feel people out again, but the park busy. All keeping distance. I feel like the message is taking hold. Dunno if you listen to James O'Brien on LBC mate, but he had a succession of very clued up callers who explained rather well (and bloody worryingly) why we are not ramping up the testing. We just don't have the capacity, and the government are making sweeping statements every day about it rather than talking to the experts......something the UK is becoming ridiculously good at ignoring recently. I'm sure we will get there, but Germany doing 500,000 and we can't do 10,000 suggests something is badly wrong somewhere
