Rincon -> 5 most impressive and important drills of the Soviet Army (3/13/2020 1:45:01 PM)

Interesting read with some videos.

One of the largest and most powerful armies in the world, the Soviet Army never hesitated to demonstrate what it was capable of. Some of its drills still impress and amaze with their scope and scale.

Interesting, thought the language was somewhat emotive, wondered why so did some research "Russia Beyond is a multilingual publication, one of the brands of "TV-Novosti", an "autonomous non-profit organization", funded by the Russian government. offering news, comment, opinion and analysis on culture, politics, business, science and public life in Russia."

It was taking long for this type of comments again...

Emotive? For who? You? Perhaps you didnt like the "One of the largest and most powerful armies in the world" or maybe it was the "Some of its drills still impress and amaze with their scope and scale"?

Maybe this one here: "One of the largest and most impressive drills in world history, Zapad-81"?

oh, maybe this one below?

"The drills were intended to demonstrate to NATO the power of the Soviet Navy, and they achieved that aim. The U.S. Admirals were sure the Soviet Navy was no match for their naval forces, and were shocked to see how the young Soviet fleet (all ships were no older than 20 years) demonstrated effective coordination and concerted actions. Especially impressive was the “destruction” of an Aircraft Carrier Strike group during a fierce storm on April 23-25 in the Atlantic.

Military expert George W. Baer wrote in his One Hundred Years of Sea Power: The U.S. Navy, 1890-1990 that Ocean-70 was “eye-opening” for the U.S. Navy."

How dare to say something like that right? George was probably drunk.

Refrain from your polical views, please. I am posting here, I hope, interesting pieces of historical materials about Cold War period (period of our beloved Flashpoint game, of course) from some other sources, sice most of the military literature on the subject is American, at least for us living in the western world. And I am ok with that. I have a huge respect and admiration for the US armed forces and its history. It is just interesting, sometimes, to try to find different perspectives. As I am a big fan of russian hardware, I always try to find as much as posible interesting videos, images and documentaries from Russia. There are lots of interesting materials available if you search. As in any other place in this planet there are also lots of garbage circulating around.

I have just read again this interesting historical publication from Russia Beyond and honestly I didnt see any more bias that I would find in any US military literature describing some american military event of the past. So, you miss your point.

Every media coverage has its agenda at some degree. Some more evident, some others less...we can chat about that at another forum, more appropriate for this kind of discussion.

Let's keep the talk on point and out of the political arena or posts will get deleted and people will get a holiday. Thanks! [8D]

Fair enough Capn! Will stay away from this.

By the way, if anyone is interested, I have recently saw a pretty nice documentary about tanks (Age of Tanks). I think it is a french documentary. I am not an expert, but it seemed to me very well done. Beautiful images and scenes!

It is available on NetFlix.

The history of military tanks unfolds in a documentary series that traces their role in history and geopolitics from World War I to the 21st century.
