I agree. I have often blamed it on my own incompetence but in other games of this nature — primarily the Combat Mission series — I have found that most battles become purely attritional; recon doesn’t really work, LOS seems to play by its own rules and sometimes the scale of the battlefield makes it feel like a knife fight in a phone booth. This is different. Recon assets are not cannon-fodder when used judiciously (well, not always), air is not overpowered and above all there just seems to be — literally — “room to maneuver”, i.e. the scale and the terrain seem to allow for the execution of tactics. My theory is that the 2-D graphics deliver much better potential for realistic, terrain-based fire and maneuver combat; I sometimes think that even great games with 3-D graphics just don’t have the computing headroom to deliver a realistic simulation of LOS combined with accurate scale. I am going to be playing AB for quite a while because it’s possible to execute a plan.
