Have to agree. Roll on the F4F-4s!

Challenge from me: what likely opposition will you face?

You'll know as well as I do just how much of desert NorPac is for Japan in terms of assets in early '42. The scary stuff (Betty's and Zeros) look well occupied in other theatres.

I've tried Nates and Jeans against Allied CV raids, and it didn't go well.

Also no requirement for a raid to involve carriers. Destroyers are ideal for this, and the bases on Hokkaido are not ideal for dive bombers.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/16/2020 3:28:02 PM)

Some misc notes from Japan, for anyone that isn't reading NJP's aar:

From sources inside Japan:

I can confirm 25th Army HQ Yamashita (Conqueror of Java) is very unhappy with the 21st Division performance LGEN Tanaka now removed from command.

Also the summer dust storm outside of Perth that blinded the 7th Tank regt allowing the US unit not to be properly identified and subsequently escape has caused a feeling amongst the 25th Army that the operation is indeed cursed. Yamashita is due to give a pep talk to all units deployed on 8th Jan 1942 to settle nerves. :-)

Lots of fun- I missed an opportunity with Perth!

This was the leaked intel by the Allies to Japan that prompted that share:
Japanese intel from the 21st Division reports the Australians in Perth were commanded by General Stanley Savige, and he might be getting a CBE from Churchill. On the ground, the 18 pound artillery was very effective…but that the troops were pretty much militia grade and nothing special.

The Dutch sailors were granted leave, and there was dancing in the streets! Plans for the reconquest of Java have started already! War is rumored to be over by Christmas!

Or so they think. 😊

I am taking the time to share devices used in battles to add flavor to the game...things that are hidden in the replays but add so much enjoyment and also better gameplay.

I have built up lots of fuel for ops at Midway...

I haven't spotted the KB in 2-3 days and suspect they are heading to Wake. Removing Lex and E back to prevent any CV clash on unfavorable terms.

Will start the Hokkaido operation...

Sly of you to mention the 18 pounders but not the US 105s! Or were the latter not at Perth in time?

They weren't in Perth at the time. Would have been, if they wouldn't have been stopped on the train by the IJA tanks.

Japan was surprised to see Yanks there by Perth...and I think it threw them off their normally super aggressive land attack program.

I have gotten a lot of Americans to Oz...there are 5 Field Artillery Btlns, 1 infantry regiment, 1 base force and one heavy AA regiment so far.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/16/2020 5:27:48 PM)

Should be a fair bit of fireworks at Geraldton tomorrow...

Sweeping with four Dutch destroyers, and then in the morning the Yanks should arrive, sweeping the port clear with light cruisers, and then going for a rare afternoon bombardment in the afternoon by heavy cruisers while P40s sweep the retreating 21st Division...

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/16/2020 8:57:51 PM)

Jan 7th, 1941

75% Moonlight and Operation Geraldton begins...the Dutch, on time, raid the harbor hopefully causing the IJN to expend their long lances to no effect...

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/16/2020 9:06:29 PM)

The heavy cruisers arrive first off Geraldton, and slug it out with Natori who fights valiantly. San Francisco gets raked, but her armor I think will save her...we shall see.

So much for a shore bombardment though...

Mines, mines, everywhere mines:

TF 11 encounters mine field at Rockhampton (95,152)

Japanese Ships
CA Kumano, Mine hits 1
DD Nowaki, Mine hits 1

TF 146 encounters mine field at Rockhampton (95,152)
----------------------------------------

Japanese Ships
DD Arashi
CA Mogami, Mine hits 1

1 mine cleared

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 11 encounters mine field at Rockhampton (95,152)

Japanese Ships
CA Suzuya, Mine hits 1

And you can firmly tell him "Rockhampton is mine!"

That seems a good move. A handful of destroyers is a fair price to pay to inform Japan that you're willing to make deep sorties.

What's better yet for the Allies is that it requires a fairly hefty effort from Japan to close NorPac off to single ship raiders...

RangerJoe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/16/2020 11:54:30 PM)

Supersized Jake squadrons on LowNav can take on destroyers.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/17/2020 12:21:23 PM)

Last we left TF San Francisco, their support had stopped short of Geraldton...and they struggled in their previous fight as they were expecting to do a shore bombardment...

when behold another Jintsu shows up...and with fresh long lances!

Day Time Surface Combat, near Geraldton at 49,141, Range 25,000 Yards

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
SOC-1 Seagull: 3 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CL Jintsu, Shell hits 2
DD Oshio
DD Yamagumo, Shell hits 2
DD Satsuki, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
CA Indianapolis, Shell hits 19, heavy fires
CA San Francisco, Shell hits 25, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk
DD Shaw, Shell hits 3
DD Downes, Shell hits 3, heavy fires
DD Cassin, Shell hits 1

Indianapolis exhausts her fuel storage...or it is damaged in the fights...will be tricky to save her. All the Destroyers still have 3k+

Those IJN destroyers near Exmouth are 11 hexes directly away from Geraldton...will look for more daytime fights I think.

Lowpe -> RE: Spanking Lowpe (NJP72 vs Lowpe (A)) (11/17/2020 12:28:37 PM)

The P40s swept the retreating IJA forces from Perth encountering both Oscars and Zeroes...they did ok in the fight, but the op losses make this a win...

Mildly optimistic right now...the 66th Corp is 78 miles away from their key defensive position...would add 36 more AT guns! Can they get there before the big assault? Probably not.

Turn is away and the potential for major fireworks in:

Borneo
Geraldton
Rockhampton
Sian

What do the big red crosses in the Japanese rear mean? Are you marking the places on the map where exceptionally bad rolls struck your Chinese guys, so that you never set foo there again? [:)]

Those are hexes we are cutting the line of supply from. You can't eliminate supply getting to the front, but you can cause wastage and delay...plus it will force Japan to clear them up buying time and dilution of effort.

I think Rockhampton is the more likely target. Bundaberg is that much closer to Brisbane and could be interdicted by your bombers and fighters more easily. I think Rockhampton has a better SPS for air base development? He can bomb Brisbane industry quite easily from the Rock.

That's too few of them cockroaches? IMO every small Chinese corp should 1/3 and run around the border waiting for the opportunities
