2nd Battle of the Line Islands, Day THREE
April 28, 1943

Battle of Fanning Bay

Phase One: 0421-0506

Six Japanese DDs enter the environs of Fanning Isle. The harbor is pretty primitive as the Japanese have not improved it very much. All sorts of shipping is here and nearby. Recon from the afternoon placed over 30 ships present. Who knows what else might be here after the air attacks in the afternoon...

Captain Sadatoma keeps Onami and her five sisters (five Yugumo and one Minekaze-Class) at battle speed (24 Knots) and in column with 500 Yards spacing. It is stormy with lots of lightning filling the sky.

The Americans have no clue as to the danger...

0421-0425
A target looms to starboard as the Japanese spot an AP moving into the anchorage. A hail of gunfire dispatch the vessel within five minutes. Scratch AP Wanaka.

0429-0435
Once again the lookouts on the starboard side detect contacts. A fusillade of fire quickly sinks a pair of diminutive Subchasers.

0437-0506
As the column begins to make a slight course correction, a HUGE explosion rocks DD Onami. The DDs have entered a newly laid American minefield. The Yugumo-Class DD rapidly takes on a serious list and starts to go down by the stern. Captain Sadatomo follows the advice of his small staff and rapidly transfers to DD Makinami. Elderly Okikaze is left to gather survivors and return to Christmas.

The weakened quartet of DDs build their speed back up as the first hints of dawn break over the horizon.

Amazingly--all this action has not attracted the Allies attention. Many are still sleeping or just getting up from a restless night. Inquiries will later find a certain laxness in command present this night and morning...

Phase Two: 0513-0533
Shadows fill the area as the Japanese shoot into deepest portion of the anchorage. Just slightly silhouetted by the rising sun can been seen a QUARTET of damaged American Carriers. Captain Sadatomo cannot believe his luck yet curse his fate! He has four fighting DDs WITHOUT Long Lance TTs!

Ye GAWDS!

He orders his signalman to order all four DDs to attack the carriers. The message is transmitted in the clear by radio: "Am engaging 4 damaged American Carriers."

His ships increase speed to nearly 30 knots as the range steadily decreases. 15,000, 13,000, 11,000 (the anchored but seriously damaged USS South Dakota appears), 9,000 (a damaged British CA appears), and---FINALLY---at 7,000 Yards an American 5" gun opens from the USS Wasp.

"OPEN FIRE"

The Japanese column will sweep through the enemy heavy ships firing everything they have as the range continues to close. Numerous hits are registered on the Wasp, Enterprise, and Hornet. Fires are restarted and pandemonium breaks out throughout the anchorage as the Japanese column pivots, does a Column turn and rakes the ships one more time as they pour on the oil to breakout of the anchorage.

They leave behind----CHAOS----and find themselves unmolested throughout the rest of the day as they return to Christmas.

...the sun rises. As said several times, this is a stormy day. LOTS of cloud cover and rain storms cover the region.

The Carrier Force spends the day doing a lot of take-offs and landings as planes are cycled. Several of the Light Carriers do fly strikes; however, and here are the results:

16 Zero and 7 Jills hit two APAs a single time each.
6 Zero and 5 Judy hit an LST with a single bomb.
11 Zero and 9 Jills SINK an AP and LST.

The afternoon sees all decks closed down due to weather. This is good. Everyone can use a rest after the heavy combat of the previous days.

April 28, 1943
Chittagong

With this crazy action happening along the Line Islands, we sometimes forget that there is a war happening elsewhere. In this case, we shift waaaaayyyy East to Chittagong.

Shipping has been spotted gathering at Chittagong and so the Japanese decide to take a swipe at them. A pair of TFs with five DD and 2 CL with 8 DDs move to Akyab on the 27th. There is no Allied air interference so then they are sent in on the 28th.

The Sweeping Force of five DDs prove to be a disappointment as they engage 2 CA, 1 CL, and 2 DDs inconclusively and then retire. **SIGH**

The Attack Force comprising old CLs Naka and Natori are made of far sterner stuff. They sweep in as the DDs retreat and catch the Allied TF flatfooted. In a matter of moments, CA Shropshire sinks under the decisive weight of 4 Long Lances. CA Hawkins goes down a few minutes later having been smashed by a similar number of oxygen torpedoes. NICE! As this TF prepares to move into the Chittagong anchorage, it is SURPRISED by an Allied TF with the veteran CA Exeter 4 DDs. Now the Japanese take it and lose old Natori as well as DD's Nagatsuki and Shirakumo.

The CL and Exeter both take good damage as well as 3 of the six engaged Allied DDs. The nuisance bombardments made by these two TFs on Coxs Bizarre and Akyab is longer a problem.

I settle for that without issue.

2nd Battle of the Line Islands: Day FOUR
April 29, 1943

The flight of Allied shipping occurs in every direction. Shipping moving north en masse, to the east in large numbers, south, and even west. The Japanese harry and hunt down shipping wherever possible this day.

SS Operations
I-20 SINKS APA Bolivar with 1TT
HITS AP Murada with 1TT

I-169 SINKS AP Murada with 3TT

Ro-60 SINKS LST-459 with 1TT

I-10 HITS AP Ormiston with 2 Shells/1TT

Surface Operations
The Japanese continue to spin small TFs off of the Carrier TFs. Yesterday's are reintegrated into the screen and new ones sent out to HUNT!

2 Modern Moon-Class DD sink an LST, APA, LST and damage a DMS.
2 CL and a DD sink an AK and LST

Air Operations
Kido Butai Force B flies four strikes in the morning before weather closes down the decks in the afternoon. Strikes:

25 Zero 12 DB SINK an APA
13 Zero 5 DB SINK an LST
9 Zero 5 TB SINK an SC
13 Zero 8 DB SINK an LST

KB, Force A is attacked from Hawaii by two groups (6 and 12) of Liberators flying 2.4 inches above the ocean. The bombers are met by 201 Fighters. Half are shot down for no hits on Japanese decks.

The victorious DDs from the Fanning Raid make port but draw a strike from Fanning where 35 Zero tangle with 5 F4F and 11 TB. Most of the enemy is knocked down for no hits on the nimble DDs.

Allied Losses for the day are: 3 APA, 6 LST, 1 AP, 1 AK, 1 SC.

We are certainly sinking a good amount of the enemy's assault shipping. In the long run, that doesn't mean much but in the short term this is great! If Japan is to re-take Fanning and Palmyra, the Allies must be cut-off from Hawaii.

A very interesting ship showed up on the sunk list today! Couldn't be so lucky!

Just a note to readers, it has been nice to actually have time to do entries in the AAR. Told Paul that I only get time like this for two weeks at Christmas Break and vacation times during the summer. With my two high schoolers, we spend most of our time running them around, thus, if school is out--I have time to write. A good AAR is a labor of love. Simply hate endless combat reports...

Hope everyone had a good Christmas!

Paul is trying to get the game changed over from one day to two day turns to speed things up some. We tried this earlier with no luck buy MichaelM is giving it a shot. THANKS SIR!

Just sent the May 1, 1943 turn to Paul. In THEORY it shifts to two day turns. We shall see.

April 30, 1943 was another good round for the Japanese sinking: 2 APA, 2 DMS, 1 LSI(L), 1 AP, 3 LST, and 2 LCI. No losses to speak of. This battle is winding down a bit. Will do a THREE day update after I get the new pair of turns from Paul.

The cost of landing in the Line Islands will be 2 fleet CV, one new BB, 1 old BB, 12 APA and many lessor ap/ak/lst. I am not sure I can hold what is taken.
John said he was surprized I had not updated all my fleet Cv to the f6f before I made this move.

My impression of this scenario is the Japs have punted on the Yamato class and upgraded the fleet with a crystal ball into the future.

This game may go into '46 (unless he runs out of Gas) before I can crush John like a red headed step child.

As we spoke when you picked up this game, Lew and I decided to play Between the Storms: Lite. There is no Yamato-Class. The Japanese, instead, build a more standard BB of 3x3 16" guns. Two are built prior to the war and two more are laid down during the war.

Differences between Lite and Heavy:

Lite
4 Owari-Class BB
2 B-65 BC
6 Niitaka-Class CA (two replacing Tone/Chikuma and four building during the war.

Heavy
4 Yamato-Class BB
6 Fiji-Class LBC with 2x2 16" guns

Since we are now in Mid-1943, I have really had to balance what I am building to get things out. It has...been...interesting...keeping the construction going.

My Posting, as detailed several weeks ago, is back to occasional. Now that school is back up and running, my time is pretty full until the end of year. My John will graduate and Christopher will move from Sophomore to Junior. NEXT school year shall be far calmer! That is when I will be able to keep a regular--day-to-day--AAR going! [:D]

Before going back to work tonight, I thought I might do a Real Life comparison of relative Japanese carrier strength compared between Scenario One and BTS.

This is starting CVs plus builds to late-1943 factoring NO LOSSES:

The Japanese have two additional Fleet CVs and two additional CVLs. Total of 210 additional aircraft.

I have taken out the CAV and CLV ships due to them being hypothetical creations but when you add them, Japan gains two CV conversions while the Allies gain FOUR (2 US and 2 Commonwealth). If started immediately when conversion was allowed those six should all be complete. Net Gain of 2 CVL for the Allies.

The Americans gain three additional CVL added to the OOB so, perhaps, two of those are available presently.


Biggest problem that Paul has here is that he is now down 3 CV (Yorktown, Wasp, and Hornet), 1 CVL (King's Mountain), and 1 or 2 CLV/CAV. Japan has lost no CV or CVL to this point...
