Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/18/2021 8:09:44 PM)

Infantry should be up tomorrow at Bhopal and in a 48 hours at Bhopal

Still no sign of a stand anywhere could he be totally evaccing India ??

This is very weird he has probably 10 Divisions in India I only have 20 this wholesale flight worries me what am I walking into

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/18/2021 8:12:58 PM)

One of those Bhopals was supposed to be Jubbelpore cannot remember which :)

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/18/2021 8:16:44 PM)

77th Chindits are going to try and cut off all of Assam tomorrow there is one base Rangpur that if taken cuts off all of Assam - my recon says its unguarded but I have to assume I am wrong as its too important to leave undefended - but the prize is huge if I can take it

That one base controls rail access to all of Bengal and Assam.

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/18/2021 10:39:54 PM)

Its one of 3 things

1. He is pulling back to concentrate for a counter punch - I dont think this is it reinforcements that were en route to Calcutta are now heading for Rangoon and this is a SCENARIO 1 game he doenst have the extra 4 Divs of unrestricted troops a scne 2 game would give him - even if he did try this I could concentrate almost as quickly and with air power eaqch of my armies can pretty much stand alone if they have to - if concentrated

2. He is evaccing India maybe leaving strong garrisons in Madras and Calcutta but in essence is evaccing - not sure he could be doing this but it makes it really easy on me to recapture India - albeit if I dont destroy his forces in India they will be tough to beat elsewhere and it does leave me to some extent swinging at thin air - this is a possibility I reinforce so heavily that he just bugs out and make me march into Burma

3. He is pulling back biding hsis time and watching for me to make a mistake so he can maul some of my spearheads and push me back but is preparing his backline just in case I get free.

Honestly all three are viable - 2. is the worst for me - I assemble all this combat power and then he just evaporates before I can bring him to battle - I want the stand up brawl I have the combat power to defeat him if he stands especially if he diverts reinforcements to Burma - 10 - 15 Japanese Divs dug in in South Burma would be a fearsome problem to overcome (actually probably impossible)

The trick to taking Burma from the Japanese in 43 is 3 fold one of these MUST be true to manage it

1. The japanese player commits to a massive adventure somewhere else and leaves Burma literally unguarded - Desertwolf has committed to the adventure but he didnt leave the back door unguarded
2. Allied naval supremacy (which I dont have) put too big a force into Burma (Air and Land) and you cannot supply it - that is true for the Allies but its also true for Japan - overland supply is NOT enough you need regular convoys bringing in supply or your armies starve - so too big a force the army starves - too little the allies can make progress. It can be a difficult balance to achieve - unfortuantely I dont have naval supremacy and its probably a year away at best so scratch that
3. And this isth eone I was hoping would apply - If the Japanese Army gets mauled either in india or north of the Irrawaddy BEFORE an invasion of Burma the allies can retake lower Burma - its tough and you need to take Ramree as a supply port - but it can be done -if he steps back this one is also off the table even with every seabee and C47 on the map in India past experience tells me 5 or 6 Divisions is the most I can sustain south of the Chindwin river never mind the Irrawaddy (and in Monsoon thats 3 !!!)

RangerJoe -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/18/2021 11:38:49 PM)

IF you have some baby carriers, maybe even just LBA then you can start moving elsewhere - especially the Aleutians. If you can dump supplies into Siberia so they can get to VLAD or the area, that should help you survive there longer. If you recapture any Siberian coastal bases with non-Soviet troops, then you have a base to fly big Allied bombers from. Think of what is in range of that . . . [X(]

So if you go the northern route, that is where rebuilt Soviet divisions with American supplies can help grind down the Japanese.

I haven't seen an overall map lately so I can't suggest any other moves such as the Solomon Islands where you can attack under the cover of LBA.

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/19/2021 11:01:54 AM)

OK Rangur was defended so that was a difficult failed coup de main

So we have now positively identified 12 IJA Divs in India unfortunatly 9 of them are about to be fully concentrated at Patna

1st Australian Army alone cannot take a force that size as this is the cream of the IJA Crop

I am going to have to reconcentrate both Corps of 1st Australian Army and bring over 14th Army to deal with this.

My armoured spearhead is probably going to get pushed back tomorrow wrecking at least 1 Bde nothing I can do about that.

In essence the good times are over a concentrated 9 Divisional strong Area Army is too much to bounce out of even open terrain

I will need to build up AF's and concentrate at least 2 of my armies to deal with it

[image]local://upfiles/11987/1FC132539DC145C3A9571D1F3DE06AA2.jpg[/image]

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/19/2021 11:05:47 AM)

I have a total of 20 Divs to take on 12 its not a massive edge and I definitely need to re concentrate and build up AF's etc

Annoying but not unexpected the only question is how can I induce him to stay at Patna - this is good ground for me to fight him on I can 100% manouver him out of that base via Asanol but I dont really want to open terrain with my massed bombers would be a very nice battle to fight

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/19/2021 11:07:23 AM)

And oh look

5/Guards Mixed Brigade is loaded on a Japanese AP moving to Chittagong.
2/40th Division is loaded on xAP Kanzyu Maru moving to Calcutta.

Now they are coming to India again....

RangerJoe -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/19/2021 11:35:44 AM)

Well, as far as Patna goes, keep putting units on the rails behind him every couple of days to mess up any strategic rail movement.

It is in the open, so bombing the airfield and then the units is a good option. Doing so may mean the destruction of all those units.

Try to capture Anasol as it is on the direct line to Calcutta then you can rail there and move on. If you units stop short but are in a good spot, then consider getting off the rails there and moving somewhere else. Especially if they are blocking the railroads to/from Patna.

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Hydra kicks off (3/19/2021 12:44:15 PM)

You are correct.....if I wanted to force him out of this position - I want him to stay where my air can pound him

Sooooo it will take a week to re concentrate 2 Armies - in that week I need to NOT scare him away I want him to stand at Patna rather than Calcutta

So I will take leaf out of Monty's strategy at Buerat Tarhana/Homs - Calcutta with that force or a large chunk of it would be a very difficult nut to crack - Patna I know I can win if i concentrate so lets try to get him to fight at Patna - so no flanking no complex manouvers until I concentrate - I need to induce him to stay put !!!

Andy Mac -> South India Cut Off (3/20/2021 4:16:07 PM)

OK well its interesting

I have cut off South India by seizing the critical rail junction at Bezwada with 50th Gurkha Para bde

This means anything left in South India or Madras cannot evac by rail

My next objective is Asanol I have IV Indian Corps and 1 Australian Corps heading that way on the main road

And I am reconcentrating 77th and 111th Chindit Bdes as they need to be concentrated to drop and they have lost about a Bn each so fair in failed drops so will take a couple of days before I am ready so its a race between my lead armoured units and paras to see who gets 1st crack at Asanol

I am satisfied with progress so far but would have preferred if he tried to make stand reality is he is running faster than I can advance

[image]local://upfiles/11987/3EC6916589D14C5B9D4FD5AC7AF7E982.jpg[/image]

Andy Mac -> RE: South India Cut Off (3/20/2021 5:19:37 PM)

I sense a series of big air battles looming I think he is concentrating fighters in Calcutta

At some point soon I will need to capture the base.

My recon assets are paying dividends now my detection levels are rising so if he leaves bases unguarded I will attempt more para operations - 1st USMC Para Bn is at about 50% strength and is resting but will be available soon

50th Gurkha has captured the road rail junction at Bezweda and will hold until I can get some support into them

Bombay should fall in a few days which leaves Madras and Calcutta as the danger spots

Andy Mac -> RE: South India Cut Off (3/21/2021 5:27:02 PM)

OK day of attrition over Asanol my fighter and his locked horns and it was a draw

77th Chindit tried an assault landing and walked into a full IJA Div and were wiped out - so the Bde now has 2 of its 3 Bns out of action and will need a long period of recuperation its done well been spearhead across the map but after its next drop to take an abandoned base it will be moving into Army reserve to prepare for its next op in a couple of months

111th Chindits are at full strength but defacto the days of paras are probably over for a bit as I have compressed the Japanese back to such a small area that every base will be well guarded.

IV Indian Corps Armour continues to close on Asanol with 1st Australian Corps not far behind

XXXIII Corps continues to pursue the withdrawing Japanese 2nd Area Army but is not strong enough on its own to tangle with 9 Concentrated Divs in 2 IJA Armies

Basically the plan continues

After securing Nagpur/Indore/Bhopal/Jubbelpore I am shifting much of my strength to the NE Coast of India and getting ready for the battle of Calcutta

14th Army when shifted will hand over remaining forces to 6th US Army who will take over mopping up south India and Bombay/Madras.

In essence I will have 4 Corps facing off to 2nd Area Army and 2 weak Corps mopping up

Andy

Andy

RangerJoe -> RE: South India Cut Off (3/21/2021 5:31:01 PM)

In other words, while the other Armies/Corps do the dirty work the US 6th Army will do the janitorial duties. Oh well.[;)]

Good work though, keep it up.

Andy Mac -> RE: South India Cut Off (3/21/2021 5:38:00 PM)

I am in the middle of a complete realignment of resource when its done I will put up new Army boundaries and strengths !!!

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: South India Cut Off (3/23/2021 7:41:16 PM)

Eagle Day has come

Andy Mac -> Eagle Day (3/23/2021 7:44:52 PM)

Over Calcutta the Japanese have 300 CAP Fighters - I have to assume mostly Tojos and Zeros

I am sending 300 Fighters on sweep 200 Heavy Bombers with 60 Close Escort Fighters

And at night both RAF Night bombing wigs c 100 Bombers are going to hit the AF

He has elite pilots so this could be bloody

My 300 Mediums are being held back from the 1st wave and will go in tomorrow.

This is gonna be a hard couple of turns given co ordination I have to assume my casualties wil be heavy

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/23/2021 7:46:22 PM)

In the meantime I am concetratign c 20 Divisions at Asanol to create a large hammer to crack Calcutta once I have air superiority

RangerJoe -> RE: Eagle Day (3/23/2021 8:24:26 PM)

There is a way to increase the odds of the sweeps going in first. [;)]

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 5:43:30 PM)

Tell me !!!

OK a tough 4 day battle is coming to an end (I hope)

Day 1 none of my bombers flew and only about 1/3 of my fighter - catastrophic losses 60 for 10 - ouch
Day 2 everything flew 250 losses for 80 Japanese again ouch but most of my losses were in fighters my bomber force was essentially intact 50 damage to AF
Day 3 everything that was left flew - 90 for 40 better exchange rate and again my bomber force is intact - AF is closed 100% damage
Day 4 going in again 600+ bombers targeting AF/port and Diamond Harbour - this is the killer day have I worn him down ?

If yes I can keep both bases supressed and rebuild my shattered fighter groups

RAF will be out of action for months I have no Hurricanes in pool and it will take months to rebuild

Basically I will have to retire the entire RAF to rear area duties as my pools are exhausted - If I cann keep the AF closed the butchers bill has been worth it as even 400 aircraft losses can be replaced - eventually

BBfanboy -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 8:29:44 PM)

I think Tojo has a high service level and will likely have a lot of aircraft off line or underperforming in action from aircraft and pilot fatigue. What you haven't said is whether he could have pulled in some groups from elsewhere to cover.

Either way, you have invested so much now that a huge bomber follow-up is justified by the potential return on that investment. I count on the 4E bomber durability and 2E bombers being scheduled later in the day.

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 10:48:11 PM)

Yup it worked day 4 was decisive my bombers plastered the AF and started working on Calcutta port (important because he needs to repair the port 1st before the AF)

I also hit Diamond Harbour and will continue to hit it tomorrow

Over the coming days I will be redeploying to allow mediums to keep the bases suppressed and using the heavies to fight through

Only issue is George or Tojo IIb cannot be far away and they both have big cannon armament good for taking out 4E

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 10:57:14 PM)

The plan over the next few days will be to use 16/17k high blenheims, wellingtons, marauder and mitchells and 10k altitude IL2's to keep the bases suppressed and start reducing supply whilst my fighter strength slowly rebuilds

I call this a victory albeit a bloody one

I suspect the battle to retake Calcutta will be a tough and costly one

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 11:14:55 PM)

I need to pursue him into Assam as well after I assess the strength he has in Calcutta

I would really like to turn forces towards Madras sooner rather than later I will re organise all my Armies and Corps after I assess the strength of Calcutta

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 11:34:20 PM)

I am very weak and really running a bluff in the West of India at present 6th US Army has really only got 3 Div equivalents only one of them a properly set up Div the rest are bits and bobs ie an RCT a Chinese Div the 3rd Special Force Bdes and some armour

Most of my strength is concentrating for the mayhem to come.....

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 11:45:31 PM)

Thats 19 Divisions plus attached armour and as much arty as I can scrape up all concentrating for a joint crossing into Calcutta.

I have deliberately left a way out to the East only covered by light armour I would really like him to run and not force me to destroy the cities industry or at the very least make it easy on me - I do not want to wreck my army on Calcutta

Andy Mac -> RE: Eagle Day (3/24/2021 11:54:41 PM)

Quite weak in the west..
