Fritz1776 -> What causes xenobiological hazard? (12/31/2020 6:05:13 PM)

This seems to be unrelated to nutritional value, which is a bit odd, and given the biochemistry of some of these aliens doesn't really make all that much sense. Presumably this is about microbes killing you due to a hostile reaction with the human body, but if they are incompatible with human life, shouldn't the result either be that they are neutralized by a decent immune system, or result in a mutual kill due to chemistry? That, or they are just comparable enough that they are like earth life, only yet to evolve a symbiosis and thus are unstable within Terran biology. The problem is, the former implies they would be inedible, and the latter is contradicted by the fact that life on this planet involves fluorine, sulfur, peroxide, or some other chemical mix that should kill anyone foolish enough to try and eat it. My other issue is that it seems rather redundant. Atmospheric hazard is very high on every planet I've rolled with a xenobiological hazard. Enough so that the latter seems rather redundant. Am I misunderstanding how all this works, or is the system still in development and great things are planned for the future?

Respiratory Hazard afaik only concers itself with Oxygen content + pressure.

When gear is concerned, Biochemical Hazard is coúntered by the same amount as Repsiratory is countered. I would guess it is stuff like Pollen or wierd gasses (aside from lack of Oxgen). I would not try to breath air with a lot of Chlorine for example.

Similar the Soil might be toxic to earth plants, either due to existing life or wierd compsition.

Pressure definitely isn't a factor. I'm playing on a world with no repository hazard that has over 2 Bar. I'm also not convinced it's just oxygen since I've seen worlds with high O2 content but an insidious respiratory hazard.

I said that Oxygen+Pressure only mater for Respiratory Hazard.
Wich is different from (Xeno)biological Hazard.
But both are countered by the same gear and techs.

The Manual has this to say:
5.2.1.17. bIoloGICal hazard level (bhl)
Do the Alien Lifeforms on this Planet pose any threat to Terran organisms and Humans?
0-No threat whatsoever to humans.
1-Irritant. Filters suffice to keep alien microbial life at bay.
2-Hostile. Envirosuit advised. Filters probably won’t cut it.
3-Aggressive. Envirosuit necessary.
4-Extreme. Instant death without Envirosuit.

I know, I was referring to respiratory hazard. Unless it's possible to have Venus levels of atmosphere, pressure doesn't seem to be a factor.

The title of this thread is: "What causes xenobiological hazard?"
Biological and Respiratory Hazards are as different as Temperature and Radiation.
They just happen to be countered by the exactly same gear. That is where the similarities end.

Respiratory Hazard seems a mather of Oxygen content and pressure.
If I only got 0.5 Bar, I need ~40% Oxygen for 0 RHL. Just becaue a large part of the atmosphere is Oxygen, does not mean there is actually enough Oxygen near the ground.
But Temperature and Toxic gasses seem to play a role more in this part.
