27 Nov 42

About 36 B-17s hit Koumac, doing moderate damage in severe storms. OPilot has enough heavy bombers for this and a heavy raid on Gove. This is a PDU OFF game. It's difficult to defend against the heavy bombers. It's easier in a PDU ON game. You can build as much as what you like. Build all Tojos and Nicks and you can put a dent in the heavy bombers occasionally. But in a PDU OFF game, there aren't many units with early fighters with cannon. Zeros and Oscars just don't bring them down. Suck it up Japanese player. It's only going to get worse.

Approximately 46 B-17s and 47 B-24s hit Gove. P-38s swept. Beaufighters came in also from Horn Island. 12 B-25s hit also.

Was a day of rest northwest of Kunming. The units got supply, so we attack again.

Here's the situation between Darwin and Normanton. Heavy cruiser Furutaka, already damaged by naval combat and bombs, was further damaged by a torpedo from Dutch sub KIX. It is now SYS 49/FLOT 62-37/ENG 36-27/FIRE 0 and can move only 4 hexes at full speed.

S-34 hit a mine at Adak and will probably sink.

US APDs dropped troops at Erromango. A battle took place with destroyers rushed down from Tulagi.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Erromango at 120,156, Range 19,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DD Shiratsuyu
DD Murasame

Allied Ships
APD John D. Edwards
APD Manley, Shell hits 1
APD Little, Shell hits 3, on fire
APD Stringham
APD Gilmer, Shell hits 1, on fire
APD Kane
APD Rathburne

Unfortunately Vals didn't fly from Luganville and Murasame hit a mine at Erromango after the fight.

I swept Akyab with Nicks, Oscars and Tojos. They ran into 32 Hurricane IIb's. Unfortunately, the Tojos came in last and only ran into 2 Hurricanes still flying. Losses were 12 Hurricanes for the cost of 9 Nicks and 10 Oscars.

Cruiser Furutaka had more flooding as it sped north towards Babar. It is now SYS 50/FLOT 70/ENG 36/FIRE 0. The FLOT went up 8. It is now 2 hexes away from Babar but will probably only move 1 hex a day. It may have reached the tipping point for surviving. And Babar is just a size 1 port, so the cruiser may not make it. Enemy TF that was north of Gove has moved back to the south. And Darwin was not bombed. But subs were spotted in the approaches to Darwin, so I don't regret not sending Furutaka to Darwin.

Destroyer Murasame, damaged by a mine at Erromango, is SYS 27/FLOT 70-62/ENG 13-9/FIRE 0.

The attack northwest of Kunming went off at 1 to 2 odds again, with 238 Japanese casualties and 370 Chinese. We'll wait for resupply again and then continue. Bombing the Chinese in the mountains here has been ineffective.

B-25s hit Myitkyina. I'm not placing CAP there. Too close to too many big Indian bases.

My bombardment at Tuyun continues. With 2 divisions and 18 artillery units, it is making a dent. OPilot swaps out Chinese units occasionally, but whatever units are in Tuyun, they get pounded. With little supply in China, the Chinese units are not recovering.

Ground combat at Tuyun (74,51)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 33382 troops, 532 guns, 585 vehicles, Assault Value = 952

Defending force 62456 troops, 302 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1811

Allied ground losses:
422 casualties reported
Squads: 8 destroyed, 24 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 3 (1 destroyed, 2 disabled)

Assault units, including a tank division, are assembling south of Tuyun. They'll be ordered in at some point for another attempt at taking Tuyun.

Cruiser Furutaka made it to Babar. It gained a point of SYS damage and lost a point of FLOT damage. It is moved to pier at Babar, which is just a size 1 port. I hope to repair the minor damage and get it to a point where it can move port to port and get to a repairyard. How long it takes is less important than saving the ship.

Vals bombed US troops at Tanna and Erromango, finding the 1st Pioneer Battalion on Tanna and the 1st Marine Raider Battalion on Erromango. Not sure if a Japanese para unit can take these guys. Maybe with a naval bombardment and bombing also.

B-17s bombed Koumac.

Another attack ordered for northwest of Kunming.

Battleship Nagato has been repairing at Hong Kong for many months. It comes out of repairs tomorrow. I don't remember how Nagato was damaged, or when exactly. Tried to search this AAR for the details but couldn't find it. I may have neglected to mention it. Or it's in the AAR and I'm not finding it.

Mmmm....you mentioned Mutsu being extensively damaged on 17 April 42....could that be it?

From 17 April 42:
"On the way back to Kendari, the battleships past though the adjacent friendly base of Namlea, but were spotted there by Sealion. 4 torpedoes were fired at Mutsu. One hit and it was not a dud. Mutsu is now SYS 19/FLOT 33-29/ENG 2-0/FIRE 0 and will now head to Japan for extensive repairs."

You must be right IdahoNYer. I don't recall Mutsu being repaired. So Nagato went to Hong Kong for repairs and spent essentially 7 months in repair for 1 torpedo hit. Could have been a bit faster elsewhere I guess. Other repairyards were busy with other ships though.

I-30 spotted CLAA Van Heemskerck, CL Java and DD Banckert 6 hexes west of Perth. 6 torpedoes missed the CLAA. Don't know if the ships are going east or west.

AMc Kujirono Maru started clearing mines at Tanna. My big cruiser force is just to the west, waiting for the mines to be cleared. I'd like to catch some ships there, but I may just start bombarding. Paras continue to be moved to Luganville from Rabaul by air. Most are going to Lunga on the way. It'll be a week or so to get them into position.

I think the Chinese are finally cracking just to the northwest of Kunming.

I need to resupply again before continuing. That has been taking just one day of rest, but Paoshan's supply level has been dropping. I continue to build the captured Chinese bases to get more supply to flow to them.

2 Dec 42

4 US heavy cruisers and 9 destroyers bombarded La Foa. Noumea had been damaged by B-17s, as had Koumac. The only Zeros I had on New Caledonia have been at La Foa, and OPilot knew that. 2 Zeros were destroyed on the ground, and moderate base damage was done. Again I didn't see them coming. I brought more Emilys to the area to add to the search coverage.

AMc Kujirono Maru continued to clear enemy mines at US held Tanna, northeast of Noumea. Lone US destroyer Allen arrived, and sank the tiny minesweeper with its first shell. A big Japanese cruiser TF is just to the northwest, but with mines at Tanna, I'm still holding off going there. And I'd like to catch more than just a single destroyer. I may need these ships at Noumea to ward off the enemy ships that just bombarded La Foa.

8 Vals attacked DD Allen at Tanna but all bombs missed in thunderstorms. 27 Vals went after Tanna's port as a secondary mission, doing minor damage. Multiple enemy subs at Tanna also.

Heavy bombers from India hit Lashio's airbase, doing moderate damage. I was protecting Paoshan with Tojos.

5 groups of Hurricanes swept Magwe but found no Japanese fighters.

Japanese sub chasers got 2 depth charge hits on sub Saury in the approaches to Palembang, in shallow water. Saury is a long way from home and may not survive.

328 Chinese casualties at Tuyun as the artillery siege continues.

Another attack northwest of Kunming ordered, as supply arrived. Judging from the last attack, the Chinese here may be defeated soon.

3 Dec 42

AMc Tamazono Maru arrived at Erromango and began to clear mines.

P-38Fs and P-38Gs swept Port Moresby. I have a strong fighter presence at Buna but I was not doing LRCAP.

B-17Es from Norfolk Island bombed Noumea. I had 31 Zeros at Noumea, having moved from La Foa. 4 bombers were shot down, 1 by flak, and 3 Zeros were lost. Minor base damage in bad weather.

B-17s also bombed Daly Waters.

I had hopes for a victory northwest of Kunming this time around, but we fell short.

4 Dec 42

I-34 fired 4 torpedoes at destroyer Allen southeast of Tanna, but all missed. Allen did not try to get my AMc nearby. I'll sweep more today, and will have 2 destroyers at Tanna. Those DDs and a CL were not spotted nearby today, nor was the big cruiser TF just to the west.

32 B-25s bombed Mandalay.
12 B-17s hit Merauke. I took an empty Merauke with a unit fragment brought in by fast transport. I've since picked up the fragment and left. Merauke is empty.

Northwest of Kunming, we're ready to attack again. The trend has been towards success here, but now I'm seeing movement out of Kunming to that hex. OPilot will be swapping in a fresher unit soon. I order bombers to slow units at Kunming, as well as the daily bombing of the Chinese northwest of Kunming. I need success in this hex today or progress will be set back with enemy reinforcements.

5 Dec 42

Haddo fired 4 torpedoes at destroyer Murakumo at Tanna. All missed. Haddow was hit by a depth charge in return. AMc Tamazono Maru cleared some of the mines at Tanna. 12 Catalinas attacked 2 DMS at Tanna, and DMS W-17 was sunk by a torpedo. There was also a dud hit. This is OPilot's first use of Catalinas for naval strikes. They can do good work, with long range and torpedoes, in the hands of a skilled crew, but if there are any enemy fighters at the target, the Cats are in trouble.

Northwest of Kunming, we fall short again. OPilot reinforced with the 23rd Chinese Corps. The odds and results were ok though, so we continue after resupply.

Today at Urumchi, fuel went up 120 and oil went up 300. I had the refinery on. Now I've turned the refinery off and we'll see what happens.

6 Dec 42

Outside of Rangoon, Dutch sub KXI fired 4 torpedoes at fast xAP Hokuku Maru. Torpedoes missed. No escort with these 2 transports. They are carrying a large garrison unit for Rangoon, which will free up a rested and trained (as much as they can be) Thai division.

That US cruiser TF bombarded Noumea again, damaging Zeros, causing 530 casualties, and doing moderate base damage. Wherever OPilot sees my Zeros, either at La Foa or Noumea, he bombards. I have a big cruiser force nearby, west of Tanna. I thought about moving them to Noumea yesterday, but I didn't see the enemy TF coming. But that is how it is. They show up only if I don't see them coming. So, I'll try something different. The cruisers will move to a dot base northeast of Noumea, and patrol, with a range of 2, theoretically allowing them to react into Noumea. I just have to hope that they are not spotted, as this is a bit closer to Norfolk Island than where they have been.

Also there are 142 mines at Noumea, and none were hit again. A large minelaying TF is now formed at Truk. I plan on dropping about 200 mines at La Foa and 200 at Noumea.

There are some cargo ships at Horn Island. I sent Nicks and Tojos to sweep Horn, and was surprised to find P-38F on CAP there. OPilot has the squadron split into thirds, which he likes to do, stacking the fighters at different altitudes. Some were above my sweepers, some below. The Nicks came in first and did ok. The Tojos came next and did better. 7 P-38Fs and 6 Nicks were lost. I had Bettys at Buna with an Oscar escort, set for naval attack at range 9, which is the range to Horn, but they didn't fly.

Big attack at Magwe. No CAP there today, and just as well. 5 Hurricane squadrons swept, followed by lots of heavy bombers and B-25s. Lots of oil destroyed. Magwe now has just 99 out of 300 oil operational.

About 50 B-24Ds bombed Milne Bay, doing heavy damage. So it goes.

Big surprise for today was at Tuyun.

7 Dec 42

December 7th, 1942. A day that will live in obscurity.

I had Tojos sweep Horn again, but the P-38s had left. No shipping there either, so no strike from the Bettys. P-38s swept Gove instead, and then it got the treatment from the heavies.

I got ambushed near Lanchow. It had happened once before, so I shouldn't be surprised. P-43s and P-66s intercepted my daily bombing of Chinese troops just east of Lanchow. 23 Sonias and 7 Lilys were shot down. OPilot evidently got enough supply into Lanchow to support the aircraft.

Blens and B-25s bombed Katha. I'm not defending it, nor repairing damage there.

A battleship task force and what I'll call mini-KB has formed up at Singapore and will move north into the Indian Ocean. The mission is to bombard Akyab. Minelayers are headed north too, destination to be determined. Akyab is a big airbase now and the Allied troops have made contact with the Thai division southeast of Akyab. I want to put a crimp in the Allied offensive by bombarding their supply source.

8 Dec 42

Yesterday, Oscars from Sian swept Chengtu and found no CAP. Chengtu is a big Chinese industrial town. I knew there would be CAP there today. I sent one Oscar squadron back. It was a fairly even fight, with the Oscars coming in high and getting the bounce in many engagements. The Chinese P-43s, P-66s and P-40Es were in a layered CAP and did ok. Losses were 10 Oscar Ic's while downing 6 P-40Es, 2 P-66s and a P-43. There are no Oscar Ic's in the pool, and I'm not building any. Most of the Oscar Ic units upgrade to the IIa model, and the IIa factories come on line in February 1943. Hoping for a research advancement before that.

Tojos swept Horn Island and found no CAP. Bettys hit the airbase, causing heavy damage and hitting some P-38s on the ground and an F-4 recon unit.

P-38s again swept Gove and again found no CAP. Lots of heavy bombers again hit the base.

After a long period of attack and rest, attack and rest, we finally won the battle just northwest of Kunming.

9 Dec 42

I sent I-121 and I-122 to lay mines in the shallow water of the western approach to Victoria. Bad luck. SC-637 was there and damaged I-121. Worse, it's obvious what I was doing, so those mines are wasted. 2 other minelaying subs are headed north.

There are now at least 2 units at Tanna, northeast of Noumea. The 3rd Marine Raider Battalion had been there. The 1st Pioneer Battalion was at adjacent Erromango, but's it is on Tanna now. Probably too much for a small para unit to win against. I'll keep bombing and maybe bombard soon. My CA TF is at Noumea and is seen there.

apbarog -> RE: Deja Vu All Over Again - apbarog(J) vs OPilot(A) (1/19/2022 4:12:58 AM)

10 Dec 42

Flying Fish fired 2 torpedoes at xAK Taizin Maru on the western coast of Korea. Cargo task forces from Keijo have been hugging the coast as they headed south to Japan. OPilot knows this. I'm not changing my route here. Instead, I have multiple ASW task forces looking for the subs. In the shallow water, I'll get them eventually. I also have Bettys on ASW duty from Keijo south to Nagasaki.

RO-61 spotted a US task force with at least 5 APDs and a DD just east of Tanna. The enemy ships went to Tanna with an unknown mission. Could be dropping off supply. I've bombed the port at Tanna and it is damaged about 25%. No airfield there yet. There weren't engineers there but there may be now.

9 Vals from Lakatoro, 6 hexes from Tanna, bombed the ships at Tanna in the morning, getting one 250kg hit on APD Rathburne. 27 Vals from Luganville, 7 hexes from Tanna, then bombed the ships.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Tanna at 120,157

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 38 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

D3A1 Val: 3 damaged
D3A1 Val: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
APD Kane, Bomb hits 2, on fire
APD Rathburne, Bomb hits 6, heavy fires, heavy damage
APD Stringham, Bomb hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
DD Allen, Bomb hits 2, on fire
APD John D. Edwards, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires

Naval Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb
6 x D3A1 Val releasing from 1000' *
Naval Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb
4 x D3A1 Val releasing from 3000' *
Naval Attack: 2 x 60 kg GP Bomb

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring APD Stringham
Heavy smoke from fires obscuring APD John D. Edwards

These hits were with smaller bombs, due to the extended range, but there were lots of hits.

In the afternoon, 6 Vals returned to attack again, and got another 250kg hit on John D. Edwards and Stringham. Audio says that 2 ships sunk.

My first attack at Kunming went better than expected. How much did the Chinese Expeditionary HQ help, having switched its prep from Tuyun to Kunming? Not sure, but it didn't hurt. It is prepped around 33 for Kunming, so not a lot, but it's something.

11 Dec 42

I-27 spotted xAP Malda and AM Cromarty north of Diego Garcia. It appears that the ships headed south to the island.

OPilot swept the non-base hex with a Japanese division in it, south of Akyab. Not something I've thought of, at least recently. I was surprised and thought that you could only do that over an enemy base, but I guess it makes sense. You can LRCAP over such a hex. Just something different.

48 B-24s bombed Lae and made a mess of the airfield. 1 leftover Nick there destroyed on the ground. OPilot sees my CAP at Buna and has other places he can go. I can play the shell game and guess between Buna, Lae, Port Moresby and Milne Bay, but I not only have to guess the target, but also the right day. The heavy bombers rest more often than not.

Attacked way up at Wasu, north of Urumchi. Got a 1 to 1 attack with the 23rd Tank Regiment attacking the 259th Chinese Brigade, and lowered the forts to 0. No casualties on either side though. As long as the tanks (somehow) have supply, they'll attack. By the way, oil is not flowing south out of Urumchi. It is at its maximum with 50,000 oil. I've tried turning on and off the refinery there. It does appear that a small amount of fuel is leaving Urumchi, so I'm leaving the refinery on and I'll take whatever I can get. It won't draw more oil there. It's already at its max. Maybe if I had a big oil deficit at Port Arthur it might draw oil out of Urumchi. I don't know.

Big attack at Kunming and north of Tuyun today.

And the Japanese Navy has been spotted west of Burma.

8 Japanese cruisers and 3 destroyers bombarded Tanna. 180 casualties, 34 port hits and 11 port supply hits. The task force retired towards Belep Island, next to Koumac, where 2 AKEs wait.

Yesterday I spotted a small enemy task force east of Adak in the Aleutians. I rushed 3 destroyers to Adak, and they sank AMc Pintail there. OPilot wants to clear my mines at Adak. 10 B-26s, flying at 1000 feet, attacked the destroyers, but all bombs missed. One Marauder was shot down by flak. Destroyer Fuyo then hit S-35 with 2 depth charges.

30 B-17s from Norfolk Island bombed Koumac, doing moderate damage. I'm not able to keep up repairs on New Caledonia. I have one fighter squadron there and they can't cover all 3 bases. OPilot hits where they are not.

We attacked north of Tuyun with 2 fresh infantry divisions. Slow progress here.

The Chinese now have 89,000 men just east of Kunming, in a hex with a 25,000 stacking limit. Great time to hit with as many bombers as possible. Units at Kunming head east to continue the attacks. Kunming now has 50 heavy industry. Thinking that OPilot may strike that immediately from Ledo, I move Tojos to Mengtze and have them LRCAP Kunming. Kunming itself is too damaged to take on planes.

I-5 is patrolling west of Karachi, at the map edge from Abadan, and at the western exit from Abadan. It spotted an AM and a TK. AM Bengal hit the sub with 2 depth charges, and it is badly damaged and a long way from home. I-5 is SYS 41/FLOT 73-51/ENG 1/FIRE 0. I don't think it will make it. The tanker(s) aren't heading to Karachi. They're probably cutting across to go to Cape Town. I've seen a huge tanker convoy off-map through SigInt going from Mombasa to Capetown.

Battleships Hyuga, Ise and Mutsu bombarded Akyab.

OPilot had pulled out the many Hurricanes from Akyab a day before. Most went to Chittagong. I'm not going there to bombard, with the big CD gun unit. OPilot will see me coming wherever I go, and has many bases to move his planes to. My goal is just to degrade Akyab's airfield and destroy supply there.

Speaking of the Hurricanes, 4 groups of 16 of them swept over the Thailand division south of Akyab. B-25s and Blens then bombed the division. It is very disrupted and vulnerable to an attack by the British and Indian divisions in the hex. So far, the enemy has just attacked with artillery.

I guessed right at Milne Bay, moving 40 Tojos in to greet almost 50 B-24Ds. 5 B-24s were lost, one of which was an ops loss, while 5 Tojos were lost, with 3 of the Tojos being ops losses. That's about as good as it can get with my best anti-bomber fighters. Right now the war is just a war against the Allied heavy bombers, with them generally hitting undefended bases.

Another attack north of Tuyun. Still 1 to 1 odds. Slightly better ratio of losses but it's still tough. I have a fresh infantry division and a fresh tank division at Tuyun waiting to join the fight once the current divisions are exhausted.

DMS W-19 found a fresh minefield just outside of Rangoon. AMc Kaisho Maru joined in on sweeping there. But then PB Eiko Maru hit a mine. It is SYS 7/FLOT 69-40/ENG 1-0/FIRE 1 and is just one hex from Rangoon, and will probably survive.

RO-63 went to Mornington Island, just north of Normanton, to check out shipping reported there. It spotted an AM, an LCVP and a YO. AM Wallaroo hit the sub with 2 depth charges in the shallow water, and the sub is in trouble. The replay implied that it sank, but it didn't. But it is SYS 29/FLOT 89-62/ENG 1-0/FIRE 0.

Huge enemy air effort over the Thailand division near Akyab. (Where's the Flying Tigers? Unseen for quite awhile. May be defending Ledo.) I haven't been contesting the air over the hex.

16 Hurricanes swept.

9 B-24Ds bombed.

16 Hurricanes swept.

I am going to make a maximum LRCAP effort over the hex today. Magwe is filled with Army aircraft. Mostly Oscars, some Tojos. Carrier Zeros are flown off of the task force near Tavoy, going to Prome and Toungoo, neither of which have any air support, but for one day, I don't care. The damaged planes can rail elsewhere afterwards. Maybe the Hurricanes will sweep late and the medium bombers will bomb early.

The Thai division is now 90% disrupted and would be defeated if the British and Indian divisions attacked. The Thai unit is moving to the south, but in combat mode, and isn't close to leaving the hex yet. Needs 4 or 5 days.

We will attack east of Kunming today.

Cleared the mines dropped outside of Rangoon, and dropped 200 mines at both La Foa and Noumea.

British sub Trusty was hit by 2 depth charges near Phuket.

After flying almost continuously over the Thai division near Akyab, the Allied planes didn't fly today. Mostly. Apparently 8 Wellingtons didn't get the order to stand down, and they flew, and ran into my ambush of 40 Zeros, 57 Oscars and 17 Tojos. 3 of the Wellingtons managed to survive. This was my biggest attempted ambush in Burma so far, and it was mostly unsuccessful. The Army fighters are sent elsewhere to recover, and the Zeros are sent back to the carriers at Mergui.

And the Allied forces attacked, mauling the Thai division that was 90% disrupted from heavy bombing in the past week.

Cleared some mines at Tanna. Sallys continue to do minor damage to the size 1 port there.

9 Lilys at Darwin have been set to ground attack without a specific target, allowing them to find a couple of cavalry regiments east and west of Katherine. For now, the Australian units appear to be content to guard the flanks. The Lilys don't do much damage, but they show that I know that the units are there. Today OPilot put some P-38s above them and shot down 5 Lilys.

Schwebo, Katha and Myitkyina in Burma got medium and heavy bombers. Moderate damage.

B-17s returned to Koumac and did light damage.

We attacked again east of Kunming. It's a slow grind in the mountains. Most of the infantry in the 1st Tank Division is disabled, but the armor is still fine. Have to wait for resupply to continue.

DMS continued to sweep mines at Tanna. 12 Catalinas from the Suva area attacked a sub chaser at Tanna, but all bombs missed. Surprised to see bombs, not torpedoes, this time. Must have been an oversight by OPilot. No reason to think that there would be supply problems at Suva. Suva and Nadi are both built out to the maximum.

Cruisers Australia, Canberra, Hobart and Perth, with 4 destroyers, were spotted northeast of Cooktown. 6 torpedoes were fired by I-10 but all missed Australia. The task force is in bombardment range of Port Moresby and Gove. They've hit Port Moresby before. I moved Bettys to Buna to try to catch the ships on the way home.

Heavy bombers from Ledo hit Lao Cai for the first time. Lots of Japanese bombers based there, but they were all flying when the raid hit. 2 Dinahs and 6 Topsys were destroyed on the ground, and minor base damage was done. There are just so many bases that the B-24s can hit. OPilot avoids the defended ones. It's a shell game that I cannot win. Not enough Japanese fighters that can go up against the heavies at this point in the war. PDU OFF game.

Japanese battleships and carriers are not spotted west of Rangoon, but they need to move a bit more to the northeast to get into bombardment position. They were spotted in that area last time.

Carnavon became a size 1 airfield for the Allies. Cruisers are ordered from Soerabaja to go to Port Hedland and base there for bombardment runs to Carnavon. 2 AKEs are now moving to Port Hedland to support this effort. The last thing I need is another big bomber base in Australia.

Tambor hit a mine at Port Moresby and may sink.

3 DB-7s from Akyab attacked destroyer Yamagumo. 50 Zeros were on CAP, but the warning was only 7 minutes and the bombers flew at 1000 feet. 1 bomber was shot down. 2 dropped bombs but missed. Only the destroyer ASW TF was spotted, but I think OPilot will know there is more there, considering that there were 50 Zeros there. The battleship task force will bombard Cox's Bazar. The ASW and CV TFs will move to approximately where the battleship TF will end up afterwards. But I know now that I forgot to give the fighters a ranged CAP to cover the battleships if I don't guess the right hex exactly. I don't expect a problem though. I'm sure that all planes at Akyab will be pulled out, and the ones at Cox's Bazar may also. I'm more concerned about subs.

I got ambushed at Kweiyang. 11 Flying Tiger's P-40Ks that had to come from Chungking were above Kweiyang when my Sallys and Lilys arrived to bomb the troops. 14 Sallys and 7 Lilys were shot down. Just because this didn't happen earlier doesn't mean it couldn't happen, and it did.

Today we attack east of Kunming again. Artillery will continue attacking at Kweilin. The guns did a great job today.

Allied ground losses:
395 casualties reported
Squads: 18 destroyed, 26 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled

Guns lost 7 (2 destroyed, 5 disabled)

One of the most northern Chinese bases was captured. Wasu. The Chinese 259th Brigade was chased out to the southeast, and the Japanese will follow. The tanks will catch them for sure. All units now have insufficient supply. We'll see if the Japanese get supply to Wasu. If so, then we'll have supply coming out the Wasu.

The other far northern base will be occupied after that lone Chinese unit is eliminated.

Battleships Hyuga, Ise and Mutsu bombarded Cox's Bazar. It was a mediocre bombardment. 2 Hurricanes destroyed on the ground, a few damaged. 125 casualties. Minor base damage. None of the task forces were spotted afterwards as they retired to the south.

Scamp fired 4 torpedoes at very fast xAP Kobe Maru southeast of Truk. 3 torpedoes hit, but 2 were duds. Scamp then fired 4 torpedoes at the other ship in the task force, xAP Tenzan Maru. The 23 knot transports had dropped off paras at Luganville. This time, one torpedo hit but it was a dud. In the afternoon, Scamp was at it again, firing 4 more torpedoes at Kobe Maru. 2 torpedoes hit, but one was a dud. The other sank the ship. In 2 weeks, the Mk 14 torpedoes get their first improvement in their dud rate.

B-17s bombed Daly Waters.

Attacked again east of Kunming. 1 to 1 odds again, with 244 Japanese casualties and 413 Chinese. We again rest until resupplied.

348 Chinese casualties at Kweiyang from an artillery attack from the big artillery stack. Half of the Chinese squads lost were destroyed. A Japanese division arrived to bolster the next attack, but not all units have enough supply, so we wait a bit longer here.

The Ki-43IIb Oscar was accelerated to 1/43. This is a small bit of good news. I have multiple Ic Oscar units that upgrade to the IIb, not the IIa, and the Ic pool has been dry.

In Burma, movement is seen from the Allied lead stack southeast of Akyab, and they now show movement to the east, towards Magwe, not to the south on the trail towards the fresh units in their way. The Allied offensive seems to be slowly building. I need to send more to Burma.

Unfortunate, as the task force will be heading to bombard Carnavon, and now OPilot knows that they are in the area and also where they came from. AKEs are on the way to Port Hedland to support. Port Hedland has no airfield and is a possible target for B-17s, if they move to western Australia.

15 Beaufighters attacked part of the 16th Infantry Division at Daly Waters, causing 64 casualties. Pesky planes. B-17s then hammered the airfield, as usual.

Deliberate attack ordered at Kweiyang. East of Kunming, I've ordered the tank division out of the front line. It will make the long trek back into Burma. Its tanks are in great condition, but its accompanying infantry is almost all disabled. I hope to clear the road from Kunming to Kweiyang without them.

Dutch sub KX left Port Hedland at the same time as my cruiser force, and both headed west hugging the coast in the shallow hexes. Today the sub fired 4 torpedoes at heavy cruiser Kako and got a hit. Kako is SYS 13/FLOT 35-30/ENG 1-0/FIRE 0 and will now make the trip to Singapore for repairs, moving with a destroyer. Kako will be out of action for about a month, I think. Now just a light cruiser and a couple of destroyers will bombard Carnavon.

Attacked at Kweiyang and lowered the forts, with both sides taking significant casualties.

Need to wait for resupply before continuing the attack.

The A6M5 Zero was accelerated to 2/43. Yesterday, the Nakajima HA-45 engine was accelerated to 4/43. The HA-45 is important as I am invested heavily in researching the Frank, and far more units take the Frank in a PDU-OFF game than the Tojo. I need the Frank. HA45 engines sooner mean getting 500 engines sooner which means speeding up the Frank.

My cruisers at Noumea moved NE 2 hexes to a dot base, where the Yamato battleship TF moved also. Both task forces were spotted, but not well, today. Both will now move to Noumea.
