Brit BB PoW bombarded Tavoy, followed by Wellingtons bombing the base.

A Chinese base force and headquarters that had been chased out of Yenan some time ago, surrendered.

CV Hiyo's air groups attacked several targets near Adak sustaining considerable casualties to sink one xAP transport. Land-based TBFs counterattacked Hiyo -

Japanese Ships
CV Hiyo, Bomb hits 2, heavy fires
DD Harusame

Heavy smoke from fires obscuring CV Hiyo

Aug 22, 1942

CV Hiyo successfully evaded Allied surface forces in pursuit, but with fires raging at 83%, burned up before reaching Paramushiro. Poor TF routing the preceding 2 turns lead to this. I had intended to target Allied ships reinforcing Amchitka, and should have stayed 7 hexes west of that island to stay out of range of Allied land-based aircraft with naval attack capability.

This type of piecemeal assault has been the Allied practice at Amchitka and Adak before this landing at Attu. My hope is that it continues when the atolls in the Gilberts and Marshalls are his objectives. He's creeping ever closer to Tarawa and Makin.

A Japanese sub sank an xAP off Cairns.

Tony R&D has been completed (for Sep '42 availability); 4 of the 5 research sites were changed to the Ib model.

Aug 31, 1942

An offensive push at Changteh is coming; units to reinforce (and overstack) the current position are on the move from Changsha. To clear the way for bombing of the base (and city) Nicks and Tojos swept the airfield, downing 8 Warhawks for the loss of 2 Nicks.

As the Brits continue to unload troops at Port Blair, Betties from Victoria Point attacked. But, 7 Betties are shot down without hitting anything.

CV Shokaku left Singapore yesterday enroute to Soerabaja to join CV Zuikaku. Transports left Soerabaja loaded with 4 Div(-), and escorted by a 2 battleship TF for Koepang.

Ha-45 engine research advanced from Feb to Jan '43.

The Brits continue to unload at Port Blair; 6 Brit CLs bombarded followed by the BB Prince of Wales; AV is approaching parity.

A Japanese sub put a torpedo in CVE Long Island near Kiska.

Zeroes and other fighters swept Changteh downing 1 Warhawk (only 3 flew CAP). Helens and Sallies bombed Changteh with moderate result. The overstack of reinforcements will arrive soon.

Escorted Betties attacked CA Houston at Roti (adjacent to Koepang) with no hits and BBs Pennsylvania and Oklahoma at Koepang, also with no hits.

The Judy R&D site at Okayama reached 30(0); making it the 5th of 6 sites.

Uncivil Engineer -> RE: Act III - DBB-C Uncivil Engineer (J) vs. christopher 1963 (A) (1/22/2022 12:52:45 PM)

While the Brits continued to unload troops at Port Blair, and the combat ships appeared to leave for rearming, a lone Japanese supply transport in port departed for Victoria Point. All was well until it was intercepted by a sub.

One of several transports loading the regiment at Car Nicobar was sunk by a Dutch sub.

Japanese fighters swept Changteh in turn (Zeroes, Tojos, Oscars) losing 2 Zeroes and a Tojo for 8 Airacobras. Then Helens and Sallies bombed the place.

CVs Soryu and Junyo departed Truk for the Tarawa area. CVs Hiryu and Ryujo are still at Truk repairing damage.

Bangkok's airfield reached level 6.

A 2nd (of 6) Jill R&D site (at Maebashi) reached 30(0).

This chart shows the plan for today -
[image]local://upfiles/41215/4A29FCF085D6459698CCEC2480498C23.jpg[/image]

The 4 Div(-) transports will back track a little and join the reinforcing engineers before proceeding to Koepang later. BBs Kongo and Kirishima (just repaired) will depart Soerabaja to cover the assault transports near Mataram. BBs Nagato and Mutsu will advance through the island where a lone CA was detected, to Roti, then retire. The carriers will advance to within 7 hexes of Roti to cover the BBs and attack any Allied naval assets there or any Allied naval assets that sortie from Koepang. Two AKEs arrive at Mataram to rearm any ships needing ammo. Zeroes from Kendari will sweep Koepang.

What happened? BBs Nagato and Mutsu encountered 3 Dutch TM, both sides fired and the Dutch withdrew. The Zero sweep lost 7 fighters to 3 Allied (Airacobras and Warhawks). No Allied combatant ships are now detected near Koepang.

Tomorrow, Nagato and Mutsu (ADM Tanaka) will bombard Koepang and retire to Ruteng as the AKEs move there. The other BBs will advance toward Koepang covering the assault force and covered by the 2 CVs (Shokaku and Zuikaku).

The last of 6 Judy R&D sites (at Hiroshima) reached 30(0). Judy's (D4Y1) should become operational on or about Oct 4, 1942. I plan to build 90 per month and convert the other 3 sites to the D4Y2, then D4Y3. The D4Y2 appears to be identical to the D4Y1; the D4Y3 has the same combat capabilities, but SR of 1 instead of the SR 3 of the D4Y1 and D4Y2. The current Val production site at Nagoya making 60 Vals per month will convert to Judy D4Y1 (or something else) mid-October.

Sep 5, 1942

A sub put a torpedo in CL Dauntless at Port Blair and another Brit CL bombarded the base.

Our fast BBs (Kongo and Kirishima) led the invasion TF into Koepang sinking 2 Dutch TMs in the process. Unloading will begin tomorrow. Betties bombed the airfield and Nells bombed the port. The area around Koepang is crawling with Allied subs, but they have largely been subdued.

Our small CV TF found BB Idaho again and I'm more confident that she sank -

quote:

An afternoon attack found only destroyers, so the BB may be toast. Allied bases are in range for the float planes to divert, so the reports won't help. The BB was reported sunk yesterday after only 1 torpedo, but I knew that was bogus.

At Changteh the forts were again reduced, but at heavy cost -

4 Div(-) plus separate engineers unloaded at Koepang along with a decent amount of supply. The covering BB TF sank the last TM there (for now). The 2 CV TF, the recently replenished slow BB TF, and the AKEs relocated to Endeh (closer to Koepang than Ruteng).

Zeroes (and Army fighters) swept Changteh, downing a Lightning and Warhawk for 2 Zeroes. The Army sweepers found empty skies. Helens and Sallies bombed the airfield to keep it damaged. A bombardment attack gave the overstacked assault force a breather.

The 2 CVs TF operating near Tarawa attacked Allied ships at Tabiteuea -

Playing catch up again -

Sep 7, 1942

A minefield sweeper TF began clearing mines at Koepang, but a destroyer in another TF hit one anyway.

A sub torpedo missed CV Zuikaku!

Some transports at Koepang that finished unloading were sent to Lautem with a BB TF escort to pick up the last of 48 Div.

Carrier Zeroes shot down 6 of 9 SBDs attacking the TFs at Koepang.

B-17s bombed Canton and Hong Kong, killing 2 HI at Canton and the remaining RSY at Hong Kong.

A third Jill R&D site (at Tsu) reached 30(0).

Sep 8, 1942

Bases LOST today - Attu

A sub torpedo missed BB Hiei in the Malacca Strait.

BBs Mutsu and Nagato bombarded Koepang, then retired to Endeh to rearm.

BB Prince of Wales bombarded Pt Blair.

Ha-43 engine research advanced from May to Apr '45; Ha-44 engine research advanced from Jan '43 to Dec '42.

Sep 9, 1942

British light cruisers bombarded Tavoy.

4 Div/C arrived at Koepang and unloaded in disarray (many disablements).

A sub sighted BB Oklahoma at Babar; a later carrier air attack sighted BBs Pennsylvania and Maryland, but had no hits.

Oscars swept Koepang, followed by Nells and Betties bombing the port and airfield respectively.

Tojos swept Changteh downing 1 Lightning and 2 Warhawks for 1 of their own.

The carrier air strike on the BB TF at Babar ran into heavy CAP and sustained considerable loss, mostly to fighters (and their inexperienced pilots).

The brigade of 48 Div at Lautem finished loading onto transports.

Fast tranport supply arrived at Koepang along with the reinforcements from Lautem (escorted by the BB Kongo/Kirishima TF); the Japanese now have a slight AV superiority at Koepang, but will need constant naval bombardment to degrade Allied supply.

I-171 sank an xAKL at Tulagi; I-162 put 2 torpedoes in BB Maryland at Babar, but took 11 hits from ASW.

The CV Shokaku/Zuikaku TF retired toward Soerabaja after losing a lot of fighters yesterday. CV Hiryu joined Soryu, Junyo, and Ryujo at Ebon.

At Changteh some units have been withdrawn to recoup and relieve the overstack; the units remaining will continue to bombard as long as the base is damaged and cannot be refortified.

I-34 put a torpedo in DD Gridley near Cairns; the DD is reported sunk, but I didn't hear any sinking sounds, and it's very close to port.

A sweep of Changteh by Zeroes and Tojos downed 2 Airacobras and 3 Warhawks for the loss of 1 Zero. Bombing by Sallies and Helens kept the base damaged.

A sweep of Koepang by Oscars, and bombing by Nells kept the base damaged.

The Shokaku/Zuikaku TF moved closer to Timor as Allied TFs from around Babar had been detected closer to Lautem. The second of 2 strikes had modest success -

I-32 sank an xAK off Calcutta; I-3 sank an xAK near Tabby.

The fighther sweep of Changteh downed 4 Warhawks for the cost of 2 Tojos. The airfield remains damaged with daily bombing by Sallies and Helens. The ground troops at Changteh are partially in reserve mode to rest; those that have pulled back to Changsha are full rest.

Koepang is getting the same treatment as Changteh, but with fewer air assets.

B-17s bombed the repair shipyard at Shanghai getting 2 hits and reducing RSY by 7.

The Allied troops are disrupted from periodic naval bombardments, but the presence of MacArthur greatly aids the defense! The minefield has been cleared. The Allied supply situation is unknown, but he can't draw supplies from other bases on Timor as the Japanese control them all. I was glad to see the forts at only 3, as I expected they would be at least 4, possibly 5.

A Japanese sub put 2 torpedoes in a US AV at Ocean Is. and sinking sounds were heard!

Mitchells flying from Chihkiang(?) bombed the HI factory at Canton getting 2 hits; this reduced HI at Canton by 17!

Supply PBs and an xAK arrived at Koepang; the transport took a sub torpedo hit. Supply there is not short but is needed to get 48 Div back up to some semblance of combat effective.

The Brits finally conducted an attack at Port Blair. Three battalions landed there on Aug 30; they were reinforced by a HQ on Sep 1, then a Recce Rgt (tanks) on Sep 7, an artillery regiment on Sep 12, a base force on Sep 14, and another battalion on Sep 15 -

Interesting AAR, Uncivil Engineer. Thanks for doing it. It's interesting to see the DEI as a major battleground at this point in the war.

You might have had better luck splitting your Truscott area surface TF into two (say one with the BBs and the other with the CAs). Also, the collision probably wouldn't have happened. It seems the bigger the surface TF, the harder it is for all ships to get involved in the battle.

Cheers,
CB

Thanks for following along.

It seems the Allies flew a bunch of Dutch units to Koepang (or fragments of units), reinforced with the US 32 Div and a few others, almost totally evacuating Sumatra and Java. There were some speedbumps on Java, but capture was relatively easy. Timor, on the other hand, is not!

Thanks for the advice on surface combat task forces. I think the size limit is 25, but I usually try to keep them under 20 ships; I guess that's too many.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Act III - DBB-C Uncivil Engineer (J) vs. christopher 1963 (A) (2/16/2022 1:05:16 AM)

There was a thread a long time ago, perhaps by CRSutton, that supported the following sort of surface TF structure:

*Primary force of 2-4 CL or CA or BB (idea being to keep the gun caliber, and thus firing range, fairly consistent)
*Escort force of one to two times as many DDs

The above has worked pretty well for me against the AI. You might also check other AARs where multiple small TFs hitting the same target seem to do pretty well. For instance, a pure DD TF can usually depart with minor damage when facing a slow BB TF.

EDIT: I'd also keep fast and slow BBs apart.

Cheers,
CB

CV Shokaku caught up to the other 2 CVs heading south toward Truscott to pick off any worthwhile targets; there were none. Banshees from Truscott attacked the CV TF at NIGHT, but hit nothing, even with no CAP.

The slow BB TF (Nagato, Mutsu) bombarded Koepang, followed by the fast BB TF (Kongo, Kirishima), followed by a deliberate attack -

Unless the engineers reduce the forts here the situation is hopeless. The forts are still 2.

Cleaning up the dot base back near Singapore, a JAAF Coy landed at Groot Natoena.

Betties from Victoria Point attacked BB Prince of Wales sitting off Port Blair but had no hits.

Sallies and Helens bombed Chihkiang, going in before the fighter sweep, and had some needless losses.

Liberators bombed Rabaul for the first time -

Bases captured today: Groot Natoena (vacant); recently noticed the need to clean up the dot bases east of Singapore!

BB Prince of Wales TF bombarded Port Blair. The Allies need to bring in more troops to take the base; this has been a very slow, piecemeal invasion on their part; due to lack of troops or shipping, I'm not sure which?

The only other action today was artillery exchanges.

Airacobras swept Dili, losing 1 for 4 Oscars downed.

The Allies retook Lautem at the eastern end of Timor. The defending JAAF fragment was there only to prevent the base from fliipping back to the Allies. He's at least gotta work for it! -

Bases assaulted today: Terempa (dot base east of Singapore)

Sub I-9 sank a TK off Karachi.

Fighter sweeps and bombing runs on Chihkiang and Changteh went in in mixed order, combined with new Warhawk squadrons at each base, resulted in very high losses, especially to the Helen and Sally bombers.

The Brits attacked again at Port Blair -

Notice the absence of a combat engineer unit in the attacking force.

BB Yamato finished repairing at Hiroshima and will head south to rejoin the battles around Timor.

Ki-61-Ib Tony R&D advanced from Jun to May '43. Still no engines to build the -Ia model (maybe Nov '42).

We managed to move our 3 carrier TF around Timor (well to the north) without being detected. While a 3 BB TF runs in to bombard Koepang, the CVs will move east from Kendari to, hopefully, smash the Allied TFs at Kai-eilanden -

Destroyers were rearranged among the 3 TFs shown with the CVs, to prevent an inadvertent midway refueling by the CVs or the CA escorting TF.
