Fred98 -> A bit of my wargaming history (2/15/2021 10:54:06 PM)

My first wargame was the classic board game: Rise and Decline of the Third Reich ("3R").
The axis player would defeat Poland, the Bennelux countries, Denmark, Norway and France as quickly as possible and then turn and carry out it's strategy. The Allies had to respond to threats, actual or imagined.

In Sept 1996, it was released for computer. I found 2 things we were doing incorrectly - as the computer would not allow an illegal move. Still:
The axis player would defeat Poland, the Bennelux countries, Denmark, Norway and France as quickly as possible and then turn and carry out it's strategy. The Allies had to respond to threats, actual or imagined.

Many years later, I got: Commander Europe at War. Good game, had just 2 or 3 flaws but otherwise was enjoyable to play.
The axis player would defeat Poland, the Bennelux countries, Denmark, Norway and France as quickly as possible and then turn and carry out it's strategy. The Allies had to respond to threats, actual or imagined.

Some time after that I got: Computer War in Europe 11. Great wargame! Fabulous! Its a shame it only had a small audience and then the company closed the game forum so everybody disappeared. Still:
The axis player would defeat Poland, the Bennelux countries, Denmark, Norway and France as quickly as possible and then turn and carry out it's strategy. The Allies had to respond to threats, actual or imagined.

Recently, Warplan was released. it looks like a proper wargame. I really hate that isometric look and the toy soldier look af many recent games erronously calling themselves "wargames"!
Still, I figured that:

As a result I did not get Warplan

I have now learnt that there will be a Warplan for the Pacific. This means I now have to get Warplan to learn the game mechanics in readyness for the Pacific version.

Will there be any changes to the game mechanics in the Pacific version? Is it intended to join the two into one game? How to solve the problem of scale?

Same engine, added features. These are pretty much the changes. You can get Pacific without Europe. They are seperate games. They will be the base model for WarPlan 2 global.

Here is the changes/additions from Europe to Pacific. I will note this is NOT War in Europe, War in the East, War in the Pacific level of detail. It is somewhere between Commander War in Europe and one of the former mentioned.

Map scale 50 miles / 80km per hex using a Peters map scaling which better represents real distances (Smaller scales can be achieved)
16 different types of terrains subdivided into sizes with each different features including motorized and non-motorized movement, airfield capacity, and defensive bonuses
Communications Intelligence – Break codes, reset encryption, perform intelligence
Land, Sea, and Air specialization
Individual Capital Ship groups
WW1 Battleship adjustments
Light Carriers and Patrol Craft added to the available unit pool
Hidden Fleets
Added air and naval Specialties

Hard to find a WWII game set in Europe where an axis player will do anything very different. Actually not every successful axis player does all these things, as there are pro's and cons to pretty much every decision.Allies get to do strange stuff too sometimes.
