OldCrowBalthazor -> The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/2/2021 12:45:39 AM)

Bavre (Central Powers) and I (Entente) have started a second test. Turn 1 for both sides are pending.
Rumor has it that this will be brutal....[sm=00000622.gif]

I am rooting for my opponent Bavre (In Ludendorff), what a turn of events. [:D]

He will need it. [sm=00000622.gif]

He was so excited to maul me, that he forgot to screenshot his first turn [:D] So I screen shot what I was facing, and then the aftermath. Here it comes o7

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:19:48 AM)

Bavre's opener in Serbia...I don't see as many Germans in Dalmatia as I expected. Hmmm.....

[image]local://upfiles/72627/1E5E59DC816E48E9BD9B3CE544F0CF55.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:20:51 AM)

Bavre's opener in Galicia..going for Lutsk.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/37A3AC3A0A554261A702F54D8F3AFE9C.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:21:30 AM)

Bavre's opener...operational movement of Germans into Galicia. AH makes an attack on a hapless cavalry corp.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/7041C9FDEFCC4A919F73D3CEB5A4A45E.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:23:21 AM)

Bavre's opener on Grodno...and his push on Brestlitovsk.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/3E57067BF3CF4314BB2B1D2898ED4412.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:25:00 AM)

Entente response Turn 1: Serbia counterattacks a AH corp rounding Belgrade..mauling it. Belgrade is abandoned and a new line is formed. The elite Serb corp in Uskub force marches to Pec. The Montenegrins dig in.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/0B2E0F3FA76F4E46AB074013233BF5B4.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:28:16 AM)

Entente response Turn 1: Russian forces placed under Brusilov immediately counterattack outside Lutsk. Two AH units are severly mauled. Some units in Poland are left behind but for security reasons I won't reveal their dispositions..yet. An entire army group is mobilized at the end of my turn...and could not screen shoot it..still, a good enough placement as a rear guard.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/EF74785C2EA240B39D1C2C3B2659398D.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:34:30 AM)

Entente response Turn 1: Russia has to sell some research..and uses the money for train tickets..a lot of them :) Tilsit is taken to threaten the enemies rear. Yudenich is being roused in his villa at Sochi....and has orders to replace an incompetent general, which there are plenty of.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/95A73752AF4B49BDAE87FD3765D886CB.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 4:39:12 AM)

Entente response Turn 1: The Germans destroyed a French corp too close to the border..the French Army awaits orders. The UK is currently neutral...but has active patrols looking for the German Navy. Intel has the opinion the Kaiser is going to attempt a sortee. Our friends in St Petersburg are looking into the matter. [:D]

That's the end of Turn 1 of the Montenegro Gambit 2 test.

Chernobyl -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 7:03:54 AM)

If the Centrals really can force a cut of both rail lines into Poland then the Russian units in Poland are serious trouble. Their supply goes way down and they are weak. Really interested to see.

As I said in other threads, the Austrians really should entrench that corps southeast of Belgrade, which your Serbians attacked. Not entirely sure whether Serbia should attack it or not if it's left unentrenched, but in any case why risk it if you can entrench by doing the swap trick. I'm also not sure whether abandoning Belgrade is the best move or not. The Serbians need more time to reinforce and entrench, which Austria should not let them have.

shri -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 8:18:02 AM)

This is some serious attack on Russia.

Yeah...I'm going to try to stop that at Lutsk...and I have other plans.

In Serbia...the first test I left that detachment in Belgrade and he by passed it for my corps. This time I attacked and almost destroyed one of his corps and used the detachment as a blocker. Still, if I knew Cetinje couldn't be taken until turn 3, when Albania comes in...I would do something entirely different down there.

You pointed out a long time ago about Albania staying neutral after the turn 2 surrender of Montenegro as bad for the Central Powers. Well, it's even worse for the Entente paradoxically!

Oh well, if Bavre makes any mistakes elsewhere, I maybe able to mitigate a little this thing. Honestly, this test needs to go out to mid 1915...because in the last test, by turn 4...Germany only had about 450 mmp in research, and the UK had 950+. France was also moving along, but she spend MMP's on transports and operational movement to ports to get to Albania...which didn't work out..so I sent them to Egypt.

The thing is, I am not sure about the long term implications of the M-Gambit on the Entente...but the early term is definitely bad...almost unrecoverable I think.

This match I have something different in mind..but it's going to take longer than 4 turns possibly.

Dazo -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 10:47:27 AM)

That was brutal indeed ^^ .

Thanks for the test both of you, nice to see other players trying to wreak the ga... er, improve the game I mean [:D].
I'm still reluctant to extend the front so much in the east early on and ignore Belgium on top of that.
That said, I think that german cavalry could also go for Vilna on turn 1 just for the NM hit.
The CP Vilna opening was quite a pain in the old game.

Also, reading you, I've though of a small move for Serbia I need to test !

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 8:34:32 PM)

Edit: There have been some big changes in patch 1.05, so some of the stuff I'm exploiting here won't (thankfully) work any more!

Here we go again boys. Sorry for the turn 1 Screenshot blunder!

A short note on overall strategy:
Last time I was not aware that I was already under the effect from a boost in turn two. Now that I know that the end of mighty Luxembourg has bolstered my mens resolve I'm basically doing the same thing as in the last run, just a lot faster and more aggressive. This time however my moves are fully anticipated by the Entente, so lets so what counter OldCrow has in store!

[image]local://upfiles/75853/F00461AC47934B799F4FEF66A5BF86D3.jpg[/image]

Turn 1 CP received almost maximum bad rng both in Serbia and Belarus, so consider this run a best case scenario for the Entente.

But it was not just luck that made the situation in Serbia a lot less bleak than last time. Beeing wise to my attack pattern OldCrow has made the in my opinion best possible countermoves. 4 Serbia Corps and the Pec-Nish line are still in play as I had to waste a lot of attacks on his strategically placed rearguard detachments.

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 8:42:59 PM)

In the north Russia has made a daring counterpush:

[image]local://upfiles/75853/5F9C1F9C03BD499594B4F541624C2C91.jpg[/image]

German forces are surprised and scrambling to react. Nevertheless the northern rail lines are cut and Brest-Litowsk is under siege.

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 8:51:29 PM)

In the south Lutsk has fallen, which means the southern rail line is down for at least 6 turns. Russian troops have also evacuated the two westernmost towns, which may mean they get ready to abandon Poland. All in all this is a very exciting and aggressive war of movement with both sides going all in. Who needs trenches or research anyway?
However next turn is turn 3, so the boost from Montenegro will be applied on top of the fading one from Luxembourg. The Kaisers Angels of Death are about to descend on the battlefield.

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/3/2021 9:33:19 PM)

I'm ok with Luxembourg going down on turn 1....but not Montenegro on turn 2. Still, we have to work with what we got, no? [sm=Evil-210.gif]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 12:56:49 AM)

Entente Turn 2:

Montenegro falls...the Serbs create a new line. France never opens the convoy on turn one knowing Cetinje will fall! This is a result of a now known exploit we are documenting o7

[image]local://upfiles/72627/1A7FFDDE206B490491D249B63EC37FA8.jpg[/image]

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:00:10 AM)

Entente Turn 2:

Yudenich and Brusilov take command of the attack on Lutsk...with 8 corps and 1 cavalry unit. Because of the 2nd turn Montenegro surrender buff...they fail to retake Lutsk!

Before this exploit was discovered, anyone who attempted a Russia First, even with Germans here, would get rolled by me. I was always happy when they pulled one..until now.

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:06:05 AM)

Entente Turn 2:

The German X Corp in Lutsk, unentrenched, withstood 9 attacks by Russia's two best generals. The stars represented the Russian units involved in the counter attack.

OldCrowBalthazor -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:09:16 AM)

Entente Turn 2 Western Front:

France stands put as the combat predictor on potential counter attacks would spell disaster. The UK is being triggered by German vessels in the North Sea...but quite a few German ships are spotted in the Baltic.

[image]local://upfiles/72627/2C2E770406064000ABA8E0BCC393CA4D.jpg[/image]

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:10:13 AM)

Turn 3, the maximum boost is here and the Kaiser is REALLY pissed about the Russian attack on East Prussia.

General: Mein Kaiser, what shall we attack in our Vergeltungsschlag?

Kaiser: EVERYTHING!

German troops: And they shall know no fear!*

*In case there are other Warhammer 40k fans among you: I know that the slogan and the chapter don't match, but the Black Templars are more german themed and let's be honest just waaaay cooler than the Smurf Marines.

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:15:42 AM)

Taking a nose too much of the good stuff captured in Cetinje, the german commander of the western front not only forgets that the Schlieffenplan was canned, he also seems to see his men double and orders an all out attack on France. Unfortunatelly for the frogeaters his men are even more high. France is down 3 corps and one Nancy (3 corps total, not this turn)

[image]local://upfiles/75853/2231927250D34C8994184E8F78A40DAC.jpg[/image]

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:23:39 AM)

In the east the Russians throw everything they have against Lutsk, but to no avail. Asked about his supply status the local german commander replies that he has unfortunatelly run out of Russians. Seriously OldCrow, how many men did you just loose? I was so shocked that I lost count. Were your odds that abyssmal and you attacked nevertheless or was that extreme rng?
Generaly Russian losses are skyrocketing across the board, including the first General. However I think it was only one of the crappy ones and there won't be much demand for command capacity anyway soon [sm=00000622.gif]

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:27:01 AM)

In Poland troops are closing in on the juicy targets. Sensing that the end of Russian oppression is near, the Polish have risen up under General Pilsudski.

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:28:36 AM)

And in the north Brest-Litowsk has fallen.

Bavre -> RE: The Montenegro Gambit Test 2 (3/4/2021 1:32:08 AM)

On the Balkans CP forces smashed through the Pec-Nish line.

PS: I could hit myself. Could have taken Nish this turn, had I played it a bit smarter.
