Plans.

I get no more CVs till the end of 1942. I am going to treat the CV Wasp and CV Saratoga with kid gloves.
Ever heard of a "Fleet in Being."

I tried to get the US Marine unit to go Island Hopping as Alvaro showed in a video. I couldn't get it to go. Do not know what was wrong. Will check it out again later.

The war was always a decided affair. Japan never ever had a chance of victory. The question is now that I am sans CVS till like early 1943 am I going to leave it hanging to long to come back and win the game?

incbob -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 1:34:10 AM)

I am looking at the possibility of trying to record and make a "Lets Play Tutorial" for YouTube.
I have never recorded and uploaded before and I have some things in the game I have yet to figure out before I do, but it is really needed badly.

August 2nd, 1941 Japan Moves

-- Japan changes their codes making it harder for the Allies to decipher.
-- US engineers correct some of the problems with the Mk #14 torpedo, +1 surface combat. Not that I have any SS.
-- One of the quietest turns I have seen.
-- Allied air forces destroy 40 supplies headed for Rabaul.
-- Allied air forces destroy 40 supplies headed for Guadalcanal.
-- The US 40th Div., on Guadalcanal is out of supply.
-- I no longer know where the Japanese CVs are.

India-Burma-Rangoon
-- The Japanese 22nd Army, 15th Army with support from the 5th Air Div. attacked the India 14th Div., which had support in the air from the 1st IAF. In he air the air war has turned against Japan (J1-I0). On the land the 14th holds causing some Japanese casualties (J3-I1).
-- The Japanse 29th Army, 31st Army, and 28th Army attacked the UK 11th E. African Div. The 11th held and casualties were equal (J1-U1).
-- The Japanese 29th Army then turned to attack the Waziristan Div. that was 50 miles north of Yenangyuang protecting the 1st IAF. Neithe side suffered many casualties (J0-I0).

China.
-- The only attack on he Chinese mainland occurred when the Japanese 13th Army attacked the Chinse 15th Army. The 15th took heavy casualties and was force to retreat. (J0-C3).

August 2nd, 1941 Allied Moves

India-Burma-Rangoon
-- The India Madras Naval Base Force moves 50 miles to the southeast and links up with the UK 11th E. African Division to encircle the Japanese 29th Army. General Giffard has some doubt about the Madras force being able to hold its position (57% effectiveness).
-- The India 2nd Bde moves northwest and the UK 10th Corp disembarks at Rangoon.
-- General Giffard orders the Indian 1st Corp, 14th Div., 17th Div., and Lahore Div. to repeatedly attack the Japanese 22nd Army to open the Burma road. The attacks fail as both sides take few casualties. (J0-I1). Professionals agree that this attack has left the Indian forces dangerously weak.
It is bad. Running counter clockwise effectiveness is: 10%, 19%, 22%, and 24%. I expect the 1st Corp to shatter.

-- The UK places a COMINT unit 100 miles north of Moulmein.

China.
-- The Communist Chinese 4th Army continues its retreat and is near collapse before it is given supply trucks.

South Pacific
-- The US Noumea Def Force moves 50 miles north Buin and builds an airfield. NZ The 4th/5t h Tac Group rebases there, but they need some rest and replenishment (48% effectiveness). They are given supply trucks.
-- The US 1st Interceptor group rebases from Milne Ba to San Cristobal.
-- The BB Colorado, BB California, 13th DD enter San Cristobal port.
-- The BB North Carolina, BB Nevada, BB Maryland with the 11th, 12th, and 14th CL/DD leave Buin at night and supply the 40th Div. with supplies (Beachhead Supply).
-- The BB South Dakota makes a brave run and enters port at Buin.
-- The US 3rd Bomber group does an airstrike on the Japanese 72nd Div. on Guadalcanal and inflicts some casualties with no losses (J1-U0)
-- The US Far East Air group, out of Lae, perform a naval airstrike on Rabaul. The FEA suffers light casualties (1), but inflicts heavy damage (3) on the Osaka Home Forces.

Papua New Guinea
--The AUS 1st Corp takes the Wewak port on the north coast.

USN
-- The CV Wasp and CV Saratoga, with the CA New Orleans, the 14th DD, the 17th DD finish escorting the 32nd and 41st Divisions into Fiji.
-- The BB Colorado arrives in Los Angles and departs for Australia.
-- The US 9th Corp leaves San Francisco headed for Australia.

Allied Production and Convoys

UK
69-10 (94-17)

USA
404-60 (320-94)
-- Purchase 2 SS.
-- 40 supply trucks.
-- The US had 5 MM left so it is now sending 5 oil and 5 PP to the UK.

China
66-4 (2-60)

Australia
44-5 (57-25)

So, if you look in the image above you will see that I have a fleet in night mode by Guadalcanal.
I wondered how the night mode thing would work. Does it stay in night mode?
I also used the fleet as a Beachhead Supply. When you use the fleet as a Beachhead Supply it automatically puts it in Fleet Mode.

The Japanese came down. My Fleet, that I did not want to intercept them, intercepted them. No air forces flew. It was a night action.

In a Day surface engagement:
Allies lost
BB Maryland, BB North Carolina, BB Nevada, BB Indiana the 11th, 12th, and 13th DD.

The Japanese lost
BB Yamashiro and the 12th CL/DD.

In a night surface engagement the allies lost the BB Indiana which means the entire fleet was sunk.

I am impressed that though the Japanese fleet included CVs no air power was used. Also, the game broke it down into two engagements, one day and one night.

Lesson learned....make sure you now what mode your fleet is in.

Now. I am sorry, I am a glutton for punishment, but this AAR has ran its course. I am either going to start another AAR, probably as the Japanese, or I am going to do a video tutorial/let's play on YouTube.

Sorry if this disappoints anyone.
Stay Tuned. I am not done.

incbob -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 5:40:24 AM)

Okay.

I am going to start another 1941 campaign AAR. It will be in a new Thread.
Should I do Japanese?
Should I do Allies again?

Magpius -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 10:40:11 AM)

Wow.
That was somewhat abrupt.
Try Japan this time.
Also would like your first impressions, given your experience with WitP Ae.
Realise probably comparing apples and nashi pears...

Yeah, I apologize. I apologize to everyone.
It is just at this point this game is toast. To many mistakes to many things I did not understand. No one was doing an AAR and I wanted people to have something to look at to see how the game could be played.

I will post a "Thoughts" in the main Forum.

incbob -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 5:15:46 PM)

First Impressions after my first AAR, Air Raid, has ended.

I am a huge Pacific Theatre fan. I have read just about every book on it, and many that few have heard of. (Look up Sydney Pash’s The Currents of War. Great book!!)
I have played WiTP:AE. In fact, I started with WiTP long before Gary Grisby got involved with Matrix Games.
I did not Beta Test Warplan Pacific (WPP). I have no relation to Alvaro or Matrix Games.
I played WarPlan, now WPE, when it first came out.
I am a casual Grognard.

Okay. I might be a fanboy. You have your warning. I probably want this game to succeed as much as Matrix games and Alvaro. Why? Because I finally have a WWII Pacific Theatre game I can play on the computer.

WPP is very much a 1.00 game. It is brand new. It doesn’t have any, or at least any I have seen, game killing bugs, but still needs polish. It needs balancing and the rework that comes when players first get into a game and start breaking it. It needs to be played. Remember also that this is a ONE man studio. This is a game that would take large companies a while to get right.

Most games just cannot get the Pacific Theatre right. They are either simplistic and abstract everything, like Axis and Allies (good game though, lots of fun), or they are like the Strategic Command series from Matrix Games. Good game, but they end up treating naval combat like land combat with water. This does not work and why I do not care for either their WWI game or the Pacifiic/Global game.

Before WPP if I wanted a good Pacific Theatre game, I had to play a board game or War in the Pacific (WiTP). WiTP is a monster game. 1 day equals 1 day, 1 gun equals 1 gun. It is almost as if the creators did not abstract anything. Great game, but honestly not for me. As someone said on the forums, people play it for years just to get a couple of Carrier versus Carrier encounters. If you don’t mind a single campaign game lasting 6 months to multiple years, if you don’t mind complex level 10 games, then WiTP is for you.

WPP is much more like a board game. It has different rules but remind me of the old Avalon Hill Rise and Decline of the Third Reich games or maybe like the classic monster game The Pacific War: The Struggle Against Japan 1941-1945. It plays very much like a board game, but on the computer, with and built in AI. WPP abstracts things that would require micromanagement, like a board game does, but leaves you free to control units, like you want to do.

WPP documentation is woeful. I am sorry, but it is true. The manual gives the bare necessities and is better now that it has been updated. It still leaves some areas and questions as to how things work. Part of this is because though it is easy to move units on the screen their interactions are complex. The game very badly needs a “Let’s Play/Tutorial.” I have never recorded or streamed gameplay, but I might try for this game, but I am still learning and have some questions myself.

Tips.
-- Understand the type of game this is. It looks simple but it is not.

-- Play the Allies first. I am starting an AAR as the Japanese and it is not how you want to start learning the game.

-- Understand that this is not a game of equally matched opponents. This is a game where one side will have dominance, then there will be a short period where they are nearly equal, then the other side will be dominant. The goal of the game is to see if you can hold off the other side while they are dominant and take more advantage of the time you are dominant.

-- As in the real life, Air Power rules.

-- Fleets and air power move further than you think.

-- Make sure you know what mode your fleet is in before you move it. Fleet mode means you can and will get into combat.

-- For production you need to think 6+ months ahead.

John B. -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 7:39:18 PM)

Thanks for the AAR and no need to apologize. Unlike real life, if the war turns against you you're not stuck in it. :) Looking forward to your new AAR!

gwgardner -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/13/2021 9:28:45 PM)

Enjoyed it. And I personally appreciate your positive attitude while learning the game, and while the game gets more player input.

It was an intense mid-'42.

incbob -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/14/2021 1:38:34 AM)

I want to do another Allied campaign with what I know now.

Right not my plans are:
Japan AAR to start very soon.

Also I am working at getting myself up to snuff on recording. I would like to load a series of Let's Play/Tutorials to Youtube. To do this however, I have to make sure my recording stuff is okay.

Magpius -> RE: January 18h, 1942 (5/15/2021 10:39:09 AM)

Great work incbob.
Your comments are insightful.
