At some point, some of us less experienced players are going to want a summary of your search and intel best practices...

Read his AARs, it is there.

I don't have much to add on naval search that other more experienced players haven't mentioned many times before but you can find some details on how I leverage radio intelligence to good use in the Empire of the Sun AAR. Take a look at posts 974 and 1223 especially. That was with the Japanese, with the Allies the intelligence at hand is of course significantly better. I already used it in this campaign for instance to inform my strike on the Wake shipping, as well as to avoid what I think were some potential threats. It's really a great resource that should be maximized, especially the underappreciated detection of radio transmissions.

Run NNE, and send some ships from Pearl (tankers if you have them, but anything really) for to refuel once you're out in the wastes SW of the Aleutians.

It's a big black hole for Japanese search at this point.

You get style points if, after refuelling, you make some raids on Hokkaido and the Sakhalin shipping lanes too.

Yes I did think hard about going NNE because of that void but I elected to go in a different direction based on KB movements and my other plans for Lady Lex. I still have the option to double back if necessary based on Dutch's moves. We will see how the next move goes, I just sent back the turn.

Even better then!

One of my early December priorities is to get an auxiliary train into the Western Aleutians, just for this reason. There's a couple xAK's in Seattle that can convert to AKE in 12 days. Throw in some of the AVP/AVD craft and a TK or two that are to hand and you can give yourself a nice forward base positioned right on one of the big IJ weak spots that can quickly scatter at the first sign of trouble...

I continue to successfully track KB's movements although I will likely lose sight of it next turn. Dutch ended up flanking towards Lady Lex and the KB is now right next to Eniwetok. As long as he doesn't catch my carrier of course, repeatedly flanking the KB if he choses to continue the pursuit could work to my advantage - the wear and tear could sideline Dutch's fleet carriers for repair at a crucial period for the Japanese. If he guesses correctly and flanks in the right direction next turn I will have to take the risk and order the Lady Lex TF to flank away to safety. I am setting up some floating fuel points to help her on her way.

In other news, I intercepted and sank two Japanese AMC raiders south of Fiji. They gave a good account of themselves, lasting several engagements before being finished off.

Hmmm. There go to the bottom of the ocean what would have been two future decent additions to the Japanese transport pool.

True but they also start down there so it can be hard to retrieve them.

The KB flank moved again and is now near Truk. I am optimistic however that Lady Lex will make it out ok, as I have successfully avoided his naval search while keeping tabs on his major forces in the area. I do believe he is bringing significant IJN airpower to the central Pacific from Formosa however - no Betty/Nell strikes or Zero sweeps from there for several turns now.

Dutch is also quickly adapting to my moves. He is now moving most of his troop convoys under very heavy guard. This makes it harder for me to target them but it also slows down his operations quite a bit. This is a deal I am happy to take. In any case, I still have a few surprises up my sleeve that I am waiting for the right time to play.

A fairly quiet turn today with the exception of having lost AS Fulton near Dutch Harbor to two torpedoes from submarine I-22.

I do have a related question if anyone knows the answer: Does the size or capacity of an AS or AR vessel impact the ship's repair rates or are they all the same in the game?

Not as far as I am aware. The cargo capacity would have an impact for rearming, but to my knowledge the game considers the dinky Dutch tenders of the same value as the big USN ones. One of the reasons why I try to save that Dutch AR as a priority.

RangerJoe -> RE: Setting the Sun - DesertWolf 101 (A) vs Dutch_slith (J) (5/24/2021 12:20:24 PM)

The Australian AS can become an AR if it survives.

Dutch landed forces at Miri and Brunei under very heavy escort. Aside from some Swordfish strikes that sank a few already unloaded cargo ships the landing was largely undisturbed. Dutch also came very well prepared for any air strikes on my part, landing five AA units at Miri.

The unfortunate name of DW1's opponent causes confusion nearly every time it is mentioned. It took me a while to sort out that Dutch is playing the IJ side, while the Dutch are useful Allies of DW1.

It's true it's pretty confusing. Even typing it I almost confused myself. I think I will refer to my opponent as Slith from now on, just to avoid further confusion!

DesertWolf101 -> RE: Setting the Sun - DesertWolf 101 (A) vs Dutch_slith (J) (5/25/2021 7:31:18 PM)

December 18, 1941

I sent in B-17Ds from Singapore and some Blenheims from Balikpapan to hit the Miri oil despite the plethora of Japanese flak there and a squadron of Oscars. The weather was no good though so I only got a single hit. Will try again next turn and this time the B-17Es will join the fun.

I've also decided to forgo the Palembang fortress strategy. I have a very good opportunity to set it up but frankly I think it's a bit unrealistic and I don't want to take advantage.

Final news for today was another successful interception of a Japanese convoy. My opponent (henceforth referred to as Slith) is guarding his direct invasion convoys extremely heavily after the first few turns so I had to look for his non-invasion convoys in the rear. I tracked one near Saigon which I believe was heading to Bangkok, plotted its anticipated course, and struck it at 16 hex range (flank speed) from south of Singapore with a force of British destroyers. Unfortunately one of them took a torpedo and had to be scuttled, but they did their work.

Two loaded transport vessels with all of those squads and devices destroyed, plus the supplies lost and burning up, not to mention the chance of those fires getting out of control? A good choice even though you did lose a destroyer. [&o]

Sub attacks coming as well? Especially for the cripples? [:'(]

Yes I think it worked out pretty well all things considered. Dutch subs (the country not the player[:D]) are circling around the area. They got a shot at the light cruiser that sank DD Express but unfortunately they missed.

Yes, air search picked up the convoy, and I used signals intelligence to confirm likely destination as Bangkok. Knowing the starting point, the destination, and the speed of the convoy over two phases as six hexes, I was then able to position the destroyer task force exactly where I plotted the convoy was going to end up.
