Putting HQ's on your depots expands the capacity of the depots. For example, a depot on a level 3 railyard has a capacity of 30k which with an army HQ becomes 50k. But if all the depot is receiving is 1-3k, the extra HQ capacity is pointless and the HQ would be better used close to the front, right?

Right. For some reasons, it's difficult to have full supplies in your depot during Barbarossa.
So the location of your HQ is a question of balance. Some deserves to be kept on a depot while other should be located close to your divisions.

Correct. I still do it as a habit for best practice, but at least while the 1941-42 Axis SMP penalty is in play it's hard to reach full capacity without at least having the HQ paired with an FBD unit that hasn't moved for a turn.

Thanks. I'll lose the HQ to depot mantra. Might be handy for new depots as they repair, I guess.
