I have this error message regularly while posting. Anyone else have this problem?

I have had this a lot lately just reading the forums.

So do I. [:(]

Check to see what is hogging your bandwidth.

ncc1701e -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 5:54:30 AM)

Well my PC is all right with plenty other sites. This is only here that I have a problem.

loki100 -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 7:03:59 AM)

I get it endlessly on the matrix forum, nowhere else (not even over on the Slitherine one)

RFalvo69 -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:02:52 AM)

Some weeks ago I was getting it a lot, then it stopped. Literally today I started getting it again.

RangerJoe -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 12:37:50 PM)

Again, check what is using up your bandwidth. Some sites take more than others, some will wait, and others will not.

Also, check your task manager and see if there is any program that you do not recognize. If there are any that you can lower the priority on without affecting the computer's performance, then do so. Make sure that your computer is not trying to update anything. Beware of "Microsoft Content" and "Feeds" as those may be slowing your internet access. I don't use Steam but my understanding is that Steam keeps checking for updates all of the time, that may also be a problem that you do not need to have.

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 1:57:46 PM)

It's a problem with the Matrix Forums/website/servers/whatever else... Recenlty, the website has been acting up. I've also been occassionally getting this shi.e lately.

It's not your comp's fault; it's Matrix's sh...y dated infrastructure that's to blame.

RangerJoe -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 3:15:02 PM)

I was having 504 problems with Matrix myself, it was not the matrix site.

Edited: This is what I was seeing. Even if this did not show up, the source of this was causing my problems.

That's a different problem though. Several people are having the 504 problem, including me, which would suggest that it's the Matrix site that has the issue.

Except that, whenever I had that problem, I would have those 504 gateway issues. As soon as I closed the problem on the task bar, the matrix pages would quickly open.

Same here.

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:01:01 PM)

Well, when everything else works except for the Matrix forums website, the conclusion is kinda obvious...

edit: Also, what's interesting it's never happened to me with the Slitherine/AGEOD forums; it's only the Matrix website that acts up.

loki100 -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:05:05 PM)

aye, and this .. again

its not my PC set up or web browser choice

ncc1701e -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:09:07 PM)

Funny enough, I can't reproduce it yet.

sanch -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:15:36 PM)

+1 - If I open a new tab and go to a different site, I get that site almost instantly. And meanwhile, Matrix forums is still waiting.

Sort of obvious to me where the problem lies.

Same here, I was trying to understand if it was my internet connection but this is only on Matrix forum.

RangerJoe -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 9:55:00 PM)

Clear your cache and your history when that happens.

ncc1701e -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 10:10:18 PM)

I clear my cache with Ctrl+F5 but it is still coming back.

Because it only happens now and then. It can work perfectly for a while and then bang, k-boom... [:D]

RangerJoe -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/13/2021 11:25:35 PM)

Exit your browser, clean the computer, restart your browser.

I worked long enough in technical support to know that this isn't caused by my computer. Even if it is something that is affected by the cache, it is only so because something is wrong in the Matrix Games end. What's more, the problem is intermittent and goes away without me taking any action whatsoever, is only limited to these forums (and perhaps the main website too), isn't affected by my internet connection, and so forth.

I've also noticed lately that the forums has at all times about 40k visitors, of which 39 900 are "guests". Which I assume are bots for the most part, which might very well be causing the issue.

What is also intermittent is the demand on your service provider and how any programs that you have are connecting to the internet.

You may not see it on other websites, but they might be slower to load.

rustysi -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/14/2021 4:44:23 AM)

Whatever is causing it, its dammed annoying and a waste of time.

Karri got it right. This is the definition of a 504 from https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Status/504
quote:

504 Gateway Timeout

The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 504 Gateway Timeout server error response code indicates that the server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not get a response in time from the upstream server that it needed in order to complete the request.

This problem is NOT my machine (which by the way is a clean linux install using firefox). And, BTW, I have 40 years of IT experience, and have spent way too many hours dealing with these kinds of problems.

RangerJoe -> RE: 504 Gateway Time-out (7/14/2021 11:28:48 AM)

I have had web pages trying to load for 25 minutes and I never got a time out error there while I did get one from Matrix a lot faster. The problem was on my end.
