More minor bombing at Cox's Bazaar, he lost a Sally to flack

I got my first 2 Fletcher DDs today, on the road to winning. [8D]

Opps, looks like KB is now off 3 hexes NW of Gasmata. It was covering a TF at Lae with LRCAP.
Last turn it was not visible to me.

Maybe he is pulling his small force out of Lae?

It was a bit expensive for me:

Meanwhile he again bombed units at Cox's Bazaar, In game shows he lost 14 Sallys to flak and 7 to ops losses. One thing I forgot to mention last turn is that the 21st Light AA Rgt arrived
at Cox's Bazaar, its 36 40mm Bofors do make a difference when he bombs under 10,000 feet
====================================================
I retook Baker Island, it was undefended.
==================================================
Interesting intel.

TF 352 followed by E13A1 Jake at 158,52 near Amchitka Island

It means one of two things. Either the aircraft was misidentified or
he replaced some Glens on his subs with Jakes. I wonder which it is?
No accusations, no problems, we have no house rules. If he did do the
replacement it means I do not have to be as careful about what I do
in the future.

see what happens. The weather report is for Partly Cloudy, the moonlight is 57% and increasing.

Nothing of mine flew. I don't see KB anywhere.
The only air action was him sinking 2 small xAKLs off Cox's Bazaar.
I put up substantial LRCAP over the other 2. I need supply there badly.

Nomad -> RE: September 19, 1942 (11/29/2021 7:14:09 PM)

September 19, 1942

Nothing happened today

Something interesting is that Rabaul is not showing any aircraft and I had a recon flight that turn.

so, I have my B-17Es flying day port attack, PBY-4s and TBF-1s flying NavT missions. There is a TF at Lae and one at Rabaul.

Even though I doubt it is true, CV Akagi showed up on the sunk ship list today.
I would not think that one Mk-10 torpedo would be enough to sink a very durable
Akagi class CV. There was no mention of an ammo or fuel explosion.

The Intel Weenies routinely consider any ship holed by torpedo or mine to be sunk. You are correct to look at the other evidence instead.

His Zeros at Lae disrupted the bombers. but we got a few torpedo hits, a couple of hits with no explosion

I have two amphibious TFs that will start landing tomorrow at Lunga. As far as I can tell they have not been detected and recon shows there are no enemy troops there. I have a Regiment of the 40th Infantry division and a SeaBee unit landing. I will see about following up with more in coming turns. This represents a big step forward.

One thing I did not notice is that on game date 9/14/1942 the Ki-84r had advanced to 3/45. That is game turn 285.
That means that he has either repaired another factory or more likely he is now getting the engine bonus.
With the engine bonus and two completely repaired factories he will get a month upgrade every 25 days.

He does not seem to have radar at Rabaul, time to target was 9, 4, 7 minutes.

Cheesesteak -> RE: September 27, 1942 (12/2/2021 6:33:30 PM)

have you had any naval dust-ups worth mentioning? Your opponent is well past the amphib bonus so it seems odd to me he didnt seem at least feint a press anywhere. perhaps just building that solid defensive perimeter and conserving fuel.

Nomad -> RE: September 27, 1942 (12/2/2021 7:30:26 PM)

Nope, no naval battles at all the I can remember. I did hit a few amphibious TFs early on. I lost a number of
Dutch and British CLs in the DEI trying to interfere with his landings. I have sunk 74 of his ships for 942 points
and lost 92 ships for 1011 points. I lost 2 BBs at PH on day 1. I do think his total is inflated because the
CV Akagi is shown as sunk and I do not think it is. That is 371 points difference.

It does seem he is digging in somewhere, and is going to wait for me to attack him.

Sinking an ACM means I should expect to find mines at Rabaul

There has been a small TF, looks like some PBs hanging out at Rabaul
the last few turns. I expect that he is trying to lure me into a minefield.
I have moved a Aussie FB squadron and a B-25C Squadron, both trained in LowN
and set them for Naval Attack. I wonder if they will fly?

Digging in at this date without a need due to losses seems a bit early to me. As soon as you hand over the initiative it's game over for the Japanese. As long as one keeps the Allied busy and losing stuff it's hard to build up in 42 until mid 43. If you aren't pressed as the Allied you will have enough stuff to easily push in the door in early 43.

Amazing that you can bomb Rabaul from 10000ft end of Sep 42 without any flak there. He doesn't seem to see Rabaul an important base, for me it has always been as important as Port Moresby in that region.

BBfanboy -> RE: October 1, 1942 (12/3/2021 6:12:20 PM)

You need a good DL on a naval target so they can find it, projecting its movement. Then you need to load up without using drop tanks to displace bombs/torps. And of course weather and pilot experience can be factors. Keep trying, they should fly when the combination of factors is right.

Nomad -> RE: October 1, 1942 (12/3/2021 6:58:20 PM)

The TF in question is at Rabaul, I have two different PBY units that fly over it and I am flying recon every turn.
It has not moved in many turns. I took the B-25s off of Naval Attack this turn and will use them against the port
instead. The FBs do not have drop tanks available but they are flying at max extended range. They would have 2 x 100lb
bombs and 4 20MM cannon each.

BBfanboy -> RE: October 1, 1942 (12/3/2021 9:53:26 PM)

Only thing I can think of there is the lack of fighter escort may allow the bomber squadron leaders to refuse? I assume Rabaul is showing fighters based there.

Nomad -> RE: October 1, 1942 (12/3/2021 10:11:37 PM)

As above, no fighters at Rabaul, I am sweeping every turn. The bombers are bombing Rabaul. It is just the FB that are not flying.
