Scenario #5 - Trident Spear

NATO vs. Soviet Union

Date/Time: 14th April 1985/ 08:00:00 Zulu
Location: North Atlantic
Duration: 1 Day
Playable Sides: NATO

The war is two weeks old now and over the past few days Norway’s Northern Air Defence System has been devastated by Bomber and Spetnaz attacks., only last week forces from Australia and New Zealand were in a major engagement in the South China Sea against Soviet and Vietnamese Forces, all sides were bloodied in that engagement.

In the North Atlantic Soviet submarines which repositioned prior to the commencement of hostilities are now wreaking havoc in the Greenland – Iceland – United Kingdom Gap (GIUK). NATO ASW forces are responding in force.

HMS Illustrious and her Battle Group along with Dutch and Canadian Forces are now in position to stem the tide of Soviet Submarines flooding into the North Atlantic to join their counterparts who have previously taken up station.

Iceland has been reinforced by Aurora MPA elderly Voodoo's from Reserve units from Canada, the United Kingdom is continuing to fly Nimrod’s out of Lossiemouth.
SOSUS is online and operational and should be able to give you early detection of Soviet Submarine.

OVERVIEW
In the last major engagement in the North Atlantic "STANAFORLANT" has been decimated by a sneak Backfire Strike and the remaining units are heading to Faslane Naval Base for repairs.
Over the last week Soviet Submarines have being trying to force a route through the GIUK Gap and have had some success, SACLANT has now deployed 3 ASW Task Group to try and hold the line against the onslaught of the Submarine.

ORDERS & CONDUCT OF OPERATIONS

1. ASW Task Groups are to Patrol assigned boxes and conduct aggressive ASW search and attack policy.

2. CATAS units HMS Cleopatra and Beaver will provide long range passive detection with assistance of MPA in prosecution.

3. SSK and SSN units to conduct passive ASW Operations in their allocated " Stovepipe" areas.

4. 351st ARS KC-135 to provide tanker support to all Fixed Wing Assets.

5. VP-26 and 404 Sqn to provide long range ASW Cover.

6. 351st ARS and 410 Sqn to provide CAP and ASuW Support to NATO Units.

The Soviet Force composition and Intelligence is sparse at present, but it is believed to at least 3 Destroyers of unknown types as well as SSN and SSK's. Soviet MRR and possible Strike aircraft based in Algeria are expected to make an appearance in support of their Naval counterparts.
NATO is unable to spare any AWAC's but MRR, Strike and Fighter aircraft from Spain and Gibraltar are available.
Allied Shipping is onroute to Rota and Gibraltar and will require protection against Soviet Forces.

I wonder if Portuguese A-7Ps will feature in Gauntlet? After all, their prospective role in a Cold War gone hot would be to patrol NATO sea resupply lanes...
(Then again, I'm awfully biased. It would've been a shame to have spent so much time researching to get them into the database for them not to be used in anything... :P )

No worries I use them in Northern Fury too.

Cool, looks like we got a lot of sub-hunting coming up. Hope my PC can handle all the sonar buoys!

Will the next couple of scenarios be from the Soviet side? I thought getting a multi-side campaign was supposed to be the main draw for this over Northern Fury and so far we only have one from the USSR.

In Command terms, that's like having your mug in the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel! Cheers, m8!

Looking great! Both of these scenarios make me very excited for this DLC.

Also I couldn't help but think of this when reading the 'Gauntlet' briefing. At least the Soviet subs don't have to run on the surface like U-96 did!
