Coachace -> Sound problems (7/19/2001 6:37:00 AM)

Sorry to post this if it's already been covered, but has there been a fix for the sound getting weird? I've noticed the sound problems after v4.5 (at 6.0 & MCNA now). I've done a fresh installation at v5.01 (from the MCNA CD) but still have the sound problems. It's like the sound engine gets confused about what sound files to play, so they playbits and parts of each. Oh, and I've deleted the steel.prf file. Any known work-arounds?

Well you may check the download section in this site and look for a "stereo sound patch" about 200+ mb. Hope this could help you. Bye

I've tried that, no help here. I have some sound problems after I've started playing and exited a few times...like playing my turn, sending it to my opponent etc...after few starts the music is all messed up. Screeching sounds in the middle of it and music as a whole sounds like some nut-case is playing every instrument in the world simultaneously :( :( Stereo patch didn't help a bit here :( If someone has about the same setup as I have and has solved the problem, I'm listening :) My computer: -1GHz Thunderbird -Abit KT7 (with VIA 4in1 v4.32 installed) -512 MB RAM -Soundblaster 1024 Live! (using latest drivers I could find) At some point I noticed that BIOS memory setup had something to do with it: I boosted the latency and timing setups and there was more screeching...I run at factory default, after few exits and once more, screeching :( Colonel von Blitz

I, too, tried the 200mb sound patch. Isn't that just for stereo sounds, though? I haven't noticed sound problems with any other game or apps, and I have quite a few. This isn't a major problem, because when the problem starts occuring I simply select a unit and the sound stops. It would be nice to get the whole game experience, though. Someone spent some time putting those music sound pieces together. -Coachace

Colonel von Blitz VIA chipsets and Creative sound cards… Very problematic combination, according to my friend who just did his investigation before buying a new PC. Apparently, ever since they introduced PCI sound cards, Creative violated PCI bus specification. They were not caught, and got away with it until recent VIA chipsets came into play. The problem is amplified if you have one of the new Creative sound cards with bus-mastering capabilities. You might want to try another sound card with your system, if you have an old ISA board, or if you can borrow it from someone else. There is a big chance that your problem might have nothing to do with the game. Please don’t rush to buy a new sound card just because of this post. I am not certain about this information, only wanted to provide you with potential lead.

I have been fighting this problem for a long time. Creative finally admitted that they have a problem with the VIA chipsets. However I also experienced this problem with an Intel chipset (815EP). That specific problem was with crackling and popping on the speakers. I think this is related (but not totally similar) to the screeching we are getting on SPWAW. I have finally fixed it by changing to a Phillips Acoustic edge soundcard. regards

Hello Few things you might check/try: See that the sound card does not share an IRQ with another device, like graphic card. If it does, try selecting a free IRQ for it manually, or just remove the card and place it into another expansion slot..this afaik rearranges IRQ's again. Also, if your board has an ISA slot it's generally best to leave the pci slot next to it unused...ditto for the slot next to AGP card. There's bus sharing between those slots that may affect performance. I also spotted one suggestion on another forum..apprently some systems have a 'hardware acceleration' setting under the control panel/multimedia. (I don't have a live card so maybe that's why I can't see such dial). In any case if you can find this setting, try playing with it...a 'basic acceleration' setting was suggested. Voriax

To voriax: >See that the sound card does not share an >IRQ with another device, like graphic card. >If it does, try selecting a free IRQ for it >manually, or just remove the card and place >it into another expansion slot..this afaik >rearranges IRQ's again. This is right, if you change slot you also change the IRQ address and if my memory doesn't cheat me some motherboards manufacturer advise to plug soundcards in a specific slot. Usually is a good thing to plug soundcards in slot 2 or 3 (counting the first pci slot as 1) Another problem i have heard is with high processor clock speed that may disturb the sound signal, so it is better to keep soundcards away from processor or to try to shield it. It is also a good thing to double check the cables from soundcard to speaker and internal cables connecting CD-Rom drives to sound cards because they are cheap cables with no or insufficent shielding Bye

All good sugestions, but I think any Creative PCI card is going to problematic with this game. I took it to work (shhhh) and installed it, and there has never been a sound problem (non-Creative card). I installed it on a friends computer and got the same screeching type noises as on my system (he has a Creative PCI card). All these machines were Intel processors and Intel chipsets of various types. The only other problem I have is that my wife wonders why I don't come home for lunch anymore. :D

Hello everyone. I currently use the Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Gamers edition. I have no problems with sound from this sound card. My son uses Sound Blaster live(about 4.5-can't remember) and he has no problems. Processors can interfer with a sound card-so do as suggested and put you card as far away from processor as possible. Simply buy some new cables for your sound card-they will only cost $3 or $4. David.

I have Sound Blaster Live 1024 and no problems. I hope you can solve yours.

Done that...I did that when I built my PC :D

I have my SB Live installed on PCI slot 3 (1 and 2 cannot be used because of my heat sink monster: GeForce 256 DDR :D :D)

Ah, maybe I'll try that...but I found a very easy way to work around my problem: I just turn off music from pref panel :D This works, because screeching sounds appear only when music is played. Too bad that I just like SPWAW music... :( Colonel von Blitz
