I previously stated that I won't tolerate any rude or offensive behavior, but let me elaborate.
With David & Shaun's support, I will try to maintain standards of conduct that are not restrictive in voicing one's opinions, but unfortunately some folks like to take advantage of this.
I WILL exercise my right to wield "The Hammer of the Mods", if a post is deemed inappropriate, tries to start a flame war, or is just generally obnoxious in tone or content.
If a posting meets this criteria, it may very well be replaced by a message from me saying "Deleted or edited for inappropriate content".
I don't want to resort to this, but don't try to test me just to see how far you can go.
Glenn

I sure am glad that they have vested this power in someone so calm, reasoned, and deliberate. It worried me to no end that all kinds of tomfoolery would go on unabated. Luckily I can rest a LOT easier now.

Keep up the good work.

Don't make him bust out Mjolnir Rune.

We better scamper back to the AoW stat and let the grown-ups do their "research".

It isn't the spwaw forum of any recent sane era either.

Guess the skin got thin lately regarding valid OOB queries....

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: The Rules (please read this before posting) (2/20/2004 6:20:43 AM)

Once upon a time Steel Panthers created a major rift with two groups. It was unfortunate then, and it would be unfortunate if it happens again.

Come on guys, we need to stop letting our feelings about what is really just a computer program, generate sore feelings amongst people that would rather remain one group of people that are essentially similar to the point of being identical people.

I have not read the great wealth of posts that seem at the core of these feelings that I seem to be seeing at the edges of the scope. But it does appear clear we are having an increasing number of long time forum members stalking off angrily.

I don't see any gain in divisive actions.

OK...I'm going to make my farewell post in this thread I guess...and it won't even be about the OoB's! lol

Harlekwin...I created the Paw of the Tiger scenario...and in all fairness to the work...did you play it or even read the intro?

It was based off a Squad Leader scenario and some research of the battle...not just made up. It was designed to show what a Tiger was capable of in the hands of an experienced tank commander and crew and with a very good defensive position to work from...and not created just to have the Kittens rule the day for the sake of it.

Ok...that is all....you are all free to resume your debate...or whatever the He11 it is that's going on around here anymore? [&:]

Orzel I respect your work, and always have. You make fine scenarios. I have only played 8.0 because of all the fanfare it got and was so impressed with the MGs of doom I promptly decided to wait for the "final final".

Remember when the players went nuts after the introduction of infantry going to ground at first?

Saying the Infantry is now too hard to kill?

Yeah well i do.

Look it is not YOUR scenario that is the problem guy it is the mindset that allowed at this late date in the life of Spwaw for the Tiger I to get its ratings jacked around to the tune of 15-33% avergaed across the board. I apologize for using your scenario as a catchphrase for the syndrome. It seems to me that we are still in an era where every OOB has little differences in what exactly it is modeling.

case in point rifle fire:

in the past we had OOBs that had the battle rifle as a solo weapon, and we had rifles that represented 2, 3, and even 4 rifles in SOME OOBS.....

"why?'

I mean considering what is being modeled you have two different cognitive frames of reference in what is being modeled per turn. That is what I mean when I say "some OOBs are more equal than others". I walked because of the pressure exerted by partisans for the various OOBs to constantly leverage things to their OOB's benefit.

My main gripe goes back to pre 5.0 days at its heart but I won't bother you with the deatils other than to say.....

"if one wants balance one should play checkers".....

regards and sincerest apologies i was not meaning to imply you were inept or a malignant force,

sven

Orzel Bialy -> RE: The Rules (please read this before posting) (2/20/2004 7:47:39 AM)

Harlekwin,

No apology necessary...I just wanted to make sure that people understood that the Paw of the Tiger scenario was not some rabid "Kitten Lover" creation were the specs and values (outside of the moral and experience values to mimmick the crews elite status) were jacked just because of someones whim and fancy. [;)]

As for the rest of what's going on here...[:-] A forum is supposed to be a place of open debate...and not something ran like the Catholic church of the middle ages.

If a post contains vulgar language...personal attacks...or hateful remarks then perhaps they rate being "bleeped"...or deleted if they are that outrageously demeaning. However, if a moderator deletes a post or censors it in some fashion simply because they don't agree with the message...then it is no longer moderating...it is censorship.

In the end this sort of enforcement of "the rules" will only serve to suffocate the forum and drive off the life blood that actually sustains it.

Correct....it's not AOW.............but deleting and editing user's posts is in all but one case (i.e. porn) flat out wrong in any way shape or form according to our policy. This sounds like a paranoid delusional thought.

"I'm doing my part to get the chaff separated from the wheat so we go about our business."
Excuse me, but that is a quote from the Bible and only God and Jesus have that right.

"I will not allow the unwanted malcontents to spoil our neighborhood. You know who you are, and you are not welcome here."
This sounds like a Nazi or Communistic viewpoint.

I am with Orzel on this. This is a www internet forum and where I live in the USA we have a thing called freedom of speech. I have a whole personal library of mine and if I have some research data that is contr.....whatever, its a waste of my time.

This is silly and stupid if this is how "Matrix Games" is going to be run or "moderated" then I have better to do with my time and will stick to SP:WaW Depot.

Later.

Les_the_Sarge_9_1 -> RE: The Rules (please read this before posting) (2/20/2004 7:05:36 PM)

I was a moderator once, it was a mistake, I was lousy at it :)

It was naturally a singular honour to be asked when I was asked to moderate over at Wargamer. I was given the capacity to moderate over the entirety of the Wargamer forums.

But I suck at being a moderator.

Moderating requires a person have absolutely no opinion.

The only role a moderator can perform, is the neutral voice of the judge.

The moment a person becomes a Moderator, they are no longer "one of us". They can't afford to be one of the gang. Because they might have to slap down one of the gang at some future moment.
And does anyone really want to have to do that?

I am an opinionated person. I like being an opinionated person. Neutral is not what I want to be.
I can keep my opinions confined to proper english usage. And I can refrain from uttering what are considered by common aggreement profane or unacceptable terms.
I can limit myself to topic categories as well as refraining from singling out individuals for personal attack.

But refraining from having an opinion, is the same as being unable to even say anything at all.

That removes the point to ever even coming to the forum.

After all, what is a forum for, if not the exchange of opinions.

Sure we can place messages requesting aid or assistance. But I hardly want to think of the Matrix Games forums as some sort of unusual tech support center and information guide.

Freedom of speech is also another interesting subject. There is virtually NO freedom of speech here. Never was actually. This forum is private property.
That it is accessible to the internet means nothing.

My home is private property. There is no freedom of speech in my livingroom either. Its my rules or to bad. Doesn't matter that my home is on a public street. I chose who comes in and who does not get to stay.

But one thing is for certain. If I am unfrendly, I get to sit alone.

harlekwin -> RE: The Rules (please read this before posting) (2/20/2004 7:16:46 PM)

Beer Les.

I just regained a lot of respect for you after that post. You did suck at being a mod for the same reasons I would. The issue here is not absolute Free speech anyone, in my eyes at least.

This is matrix's playground and I have always respected that. Overall this is one of the best places on the net. The intonation of a "unified community" when in fact there is not one should not be the avowed position of a mod IMHO.

regards,
sven
