Rummy -> World in Flames description (4/13/2004 11:34:30 PM)

I could check the websites, but I was wondering if one (or more) of the avid WiF players would mind providing a description of World in Flames, which I've heard about for years, but never had the opportunity to play. I've always dreamed of being able to recreate WWII top to bottom, but have never had the time to do something like WiF. If it's done on the computer, however, my fantasy may come true.

Any replies would be appreciated.

I'm new to WiF having just completed my game. Here are a few of my thoughts:

1. Learning to play WiF was more challenging then my Master's Degree. You definitely need to clear your calendar to learn this game. Lock yourself in your room, spread out the maps, read through the rulebook cover-to-cover once, than go back and brush up on different concepts (naval warfare, production, convoys, US entry, etc.). Don't be discouraged if at first it seems overwhelming. It's worth it!

2. Play the Barbarossa (5 turn) scenario first. This gives you the basics of ground, air combat and production. This scenario is also very fun.

3. Then play the 5 turn Guadalcanal scenario. This introduces you to the challenging Naval operations.

4. This game was meant to be played as a campaign (1939-1945). Get some counter trays before you attempt this. Mount your maps on plywood with plexigass covers (or just simple lamination will work). There are other playing aids out there that more experienced players know about.

5. I'd recommend playing with just one opponent to begin with. It's much easier to schedule around two people than 3 or more. It is also better to learn strategy on your own than in tandem with somebody that is more experienced or less experienced than you.

6. WiF is almost perfect. It sets the standard for grand-strategy WWII wargames. Good luck

Of all the global ww2 games(all4?),wif appears to me as the one most researched by historians. While it covers all types of combat, it's not as simple as merely comparing combat strengths and rolling a die. Supplies and industry are well represented as are all forms of strategic warfare(bombingfactories/raiding sealanes/espionage). I hear of people who can finish a game in weeks, though they must be playing 8 hours a day-every day. Realistically, playing say twice a week,a game should take 4-5 months, maybe twice that long if your drinking, learning the game,or both at once.I think they say for 2 to 6 players-I find 4 players is my favorite(maybe it has to do with the square table) though more players would probably make it more realistic(and easier to do playing online). No facet of combat is completely overlooked , while being cleverly simplified to handle the scale. The final version has incorporated a tremendous amount of detail. The rules can seem lengthy, but the game makes every attempt not to overlook historical factors -and the amount of information portrayed is unmatched. It's a huge game, but at least it's global -and there's no trivial beancounting. The game mechanics are truly brilliant.
