Yes, the last 100 legal and technical schemes have all done nothing, but the next one will work. Sure it will. And everyone will drive 55 miles per hour, too (except, of course where the law lets them go faster), and they'll stop jaywalking. Go ahead and call them criminals if it makes you feel good, but don't think that just passing the perfect law is going to change people's behavior. Technical fixes have an even worse track record.

It's just a fact that the marginal cost of copying a set of bits is so close to zero that the difference doesn't matter. And we're right back where we were 15 years ago: honest people will be honest, dishonest people won't. (And neither group will be much concerned with the fine print in some click-through "license".)

So the big corporation wins because the little guy can't pay tons of lawyer fees (tort reform is another badly needed issue). That doesn't make the corporation in the right. It just makes them a bully. I bet you held a party when the music industry sued that 12 year old girl for downloading music. Tell me, should we have chopped off one of her hands or two? I'm not so familiar with the sentencing guidlines on your limb-chopping policy.

No, being a Minor, they should have shot her parents for not teaching their children right from wrong. [:D]

Regardless of the laws, you agree to terms when you install the game. That is a contract in my eyes. If you don't like the conditions, don't agree to them. The Supreme Court deemed a handshake a binding contract. If you click yes on the agreement, then you are agreeing to the conditions, period. I believe your word should be your bond, but those who believe the same are in the minority these days. If everyone did what was right, there'd be no need for laws but, we are human and humans have faults. Therefore, laws are to protect society from society's lack of judgement from time to time. It sucks but that's the way it is.

I don't work for Matrix. I work for a fortune 50 company that looses millions of dollars due to software theft. It comes out of my bonus cheque so it pisses me off.

If I can't afford the losses, it is a pretty safe bet a little company like Matrix sure as heck can't.
In my opinion Matrix is in an interesting position… marketing wise. A game like WitP will never be main stream. Wasn’t it Mogami who said the 1st turn for the Japanese (to do it right) needs 24 hours? Matrix is both cursed and blessed that there is a small group of buyers that will wait years and pay a premium for games of this type: the customer base is established, but does really grow very fast. It would be both sad and suicidal for Matrix to adopt a negative attitude towards their dedicated base.

When I was working in Saudi Arabia, custom agents liked to confiscate my CDs until they could check them out for pornography before returning them… more than a few were damaged after their mishandling. I would expect Matrix to replace my damaged CD if I return it to them for a nominal fee… good business.
