BarkhornXX -> New to this Game Engine (6/6/2004 12:05:21 AM)

Hello all;

I first heard about WitP from the forums over at the Wargamer.

I never played UV - but I am interested in the game system - at least I think I am. I have a couple of questions that will help me determine if I will enjoy it or not. Any feedback you can give would be most appreciated.

1. How much micro-management of idustrial assests is necessary?
2. How does a typical turn actually play out? What do you do first? How do the different turn segements interact?
3. How does a typical air to surface attack work? Are carrier ops at all detailed? What kind of eye candy/animations?
4. Same question for suface to surface combat.

Thanks in advance,
Barkhorn.

Talking of UV air combat is fairly detailed and I really like wathcing the naval battles and air to surface (i.e torpedo bombing). Turns atleast in UV took only minute or two at best once you got the big wheel going on and nothing big had happened or was in plans.

Only ones that could answer a lot of your questions I'm afraid are the beta testers or designers... As most of us are waiting with baited breath for the release of the game... Down to just under a month or so left... In the meantime though you can refer to the WITP FAQ thread that's in this forum for some basics... also the following website will get you some eye-candy to wet your whistle so to speak...

www.warinthepacific.net

Other then that I'm afraid you'll be waiting in the line with the rest of us... I for one am VERY stoked for this game. [8D]

1. Micro Management of Industry is something for the Japanese only, and you can do as much or as little as you like. Ie you can choose which planes to build or research, increase arms production, halt production of certain items, increase ship building capacity etc. Just remember that all this change requires supply, so you have to think very carefully about what you want to mess with.

2. As far as the turns, check out some of the AAR's that are around. as for what I do first in a turn is check out my CV's at sea, then my surface forces, then check out my airgroups then worry about my LCU's. It all depends on what I have on at the moment. I try to make sure that my offensives have the necesarry resources in place before I launch them, and that my defences are in order.

3. Air to combat works in that you select the mission type for your airgroups (eg CV fighters to split between escorting and CAP, dive bombers and torpedo bombers to Naval Attack. And when they spot forces in range they will launch an attack. There are plenty of other options for attack as well including airfield attack, city attack (attacks industry) port attack, fighter sweeps, ground attack etc. The eye candy shows the forces lined up against each otehr then details each dogfight and/or group of bombers attacking a ships etc.

4. Surface to surface works the same. It shows each ships salvo.

hope this helps

Yes, that did help.

Thanks,

Barkhorn, I haven't played WiTP, but I have played the heck out of UV, which is probably my favorite computer wargame of all time (until WiTP shows up). This system models every ship, every plane, every *pilot* in the theater. Turns are one day each. (Well, you can play 3-day turns, but I never do.) Logistics play a HUGE role: you must move supply, fuel, and (in WiTP) other resources. It's really a wonderful system. If you have any interest in the Pacific war, this seems to me The Game to get.

The downsides: Only a couple in my book. First, you asked about eye candy. The map graphics are luscious, but you won't see planes taking off from carriers, nor will ship-sinkings look like you're blowing up the Death Star in Star Wars. Second, you don't have complete control over everything: e.g., you can tell your CVs where to move, and you can give them a general radius in which to attack (or target a port or airfield), but if you target a TF, you won't have minute control over precisely which ship they attack. Finally, the learning curve is a bit steep, but nowhere near as bad as ASL or any complex board game.

Thanks Grotus.

Barkhornxx,

How much time do you have... if you get uv now you will just be scratching the surface when witp comes out.. but.. you may want to play uv as a break from the collosal size in witp, and finally how are your funds. If you are floating in cash, by both and maybe an extra copy of witp for a grognard friend or two[:'(]

I'll be sure to keep that in mind Freeboy.

Barkhorn.
