AmiralLaurent -> RE: Wolfpack Tactics... (6/24/2004 6:13:29 PM)

I disagree that when several sub TF (one sub each) are in the same hex, only one will attack a given enemy TF. I saw the same TF attacked by several subs in the same hex and same phase several times. But advantage given to planes to see and attack them makes this extremly costly. I use my own wolfpack tactic against enemy convoy roads. I sent several subs, each in a TF, and will place them in adjacents hexes in two formations: _ if the enemy convoy road is known, the subs will be in the hexes of the convoy road. So any ship hit by one of them will be more likely to be attacked by subs in the same area. _ when I don't know where enemy ships will be sailing (that is usually the case in PBEM where players don't use the direct road choosen by the computer), the subs are placed in a line perpendicular (english word here ? I mean contrary to parallel) to the excepted convoy road. That was the German wolfpack tactic. In both cases, when one sub attacks, the other will then chase the TF and the damaged ship, but always in different hexes. Here the German wolfpack gathers to attack the convoy at the same time. In UV, wolfpacks is not efficient as every escort vessel will be available against any sub attacking while the main benefit of attackin in packs is that escort vessels are not able to deal with all attackers at the same time and usually are divided and deal effectivelly with none.
