Xargun -> Newbie AAR (6/29/2004 8:46:20 AM)

Well guys here we go. Rob (rroberson) and Eric (xargun) have decided to have some fun and let you all join in on our glorious conquests and angonizing defeates - not to mention our humorous mistakes.

We are playing with the following rules:

Non-historic First turn (Japan only)
December 7th Surprise On
Japanese Sub Ops Off
Allied Damage Control Off
No Port attacks on turn 1 (Except PH)
Only landings in Malaya and the Philippine Islands permitted on turn 1 (except Guam and Wake)
Also, No refuelling / resupplying from Capital Ships in a port size less than 3 without an AO / AE present
Everything else goes - if the game allows it - its permitted

There were several air strikes in china (and in Malaya), but since most of them were worthless I editted them out

Well, looks like a good first turn although 5 bbs at cagayan to floor the b17s seems a little excessive perhaps?

Depends on how you look at it. A bunch of dead B-17's is worth any price when they are not bombing your ships. [;)]

Perhaps, but with Ryujo nearby and with light escort I didn't want to take any chances, plus all I knew was that there were B-17s there - didn't know what else. This early in the game I'd rather be cautious with my carriers than reckless. But that BB TF has very little to stop it in the area, so it just might cruise around and bombard the hell out of enemy bases for a while [:D]

Xargun -> RE: Newbie AAR (6/29/2004 8:48:27 PM)

Well since I'm killing time waiting for Rob to send back his Turn 2 I thought I would share some of my plans for Turn 3...

Nothing tactical, Turn 3 is the turn I plan on looking long term at the game. Over the next few turns 3-6 most of my early expansion will be completed - expanded size 1-2 ship yards and such, and I will take a long hard look at the future of Japanese production. I plan on streamlining 2 major categories - aircraft and ship building.

Ship Building:
According to the list I will keep producing ships for another 1500+ days and frankly I plan on winning by then so I am going to cut back on my late war production of ships (useless ones at least) and speed up the production of what I deem important ships - Carriers, Escorts and Cargo ships. I plan on using the extra capacity I have built (and saved from halting production) to speed up the arrival of certain key ships. I have no idea if this will make any difference, but instead of waiting 2 years for a ship, I could cut it down to 1 year - might give me a better chance in 43.

Aircraft:
I plan on halting and converting factories producing useless planes (in my opinion) into producing more useful ones and then slowly upgrade my air units. Top of the list will be Zeros and Bettys, with others mixed in as appropriate. I think I will check the stockpiles and convert engines or aircraft factories over first and wait til they are running smoothly before I go for the other just so I don't suck up all my supply, which (Thanks to Luskan & Raverdave's AAR) I am already shipping to forward bases for use in Malaya and PI - 2 biggest fights in the SRA.

I am also still busy sending TKs & AKs to all the stupid bases with an abundance of Supplies and Fuel to load up the surplus and bring it home. There is no need for the Kuril Island bases to have 1000 fuel and 8000 supplies, when there is no one there - that supply is better served elsewhere. Also, most of the chinese (and Korean) ports have a large surplus of fuel (40,000+ units) which is pointless as except from the starting locations, I don't plan on running major fleet ops from those ports. So its a matter of time before I get the extra fuel and supplies where I can / will use them.

All in all, my first 2 turns have been more logistics management than anything else. I only added a couple of invasions to turn 1 and I think I only have 1 or 2 new invasions for turn 2, just gonna pound away at Malaya and PI as best I can. Also waiting to see what happens in China and which way Rob moves his troops before I will get more aggressive there.

Question for the beta testers - I think every unit I have is understrength at the beginning - especially in china. Did you guys wait a few turns to fill them out or push onward ?

rroberson -> RE: Flash (6/29/2004 10:48:26 PM)

7 December

The BBC is reporting that Swordfish from Singapore attacked and destroyed a Japanese troop convoy off of Khota Bharu today. The commander was quoted as saying that his pilots scored several hits on Japanese transports and also struck a Japanese cruiser.

According to American press reports B-17s attacked a Japanese carrier off the southeastern coast of the Philipines. Additionally, the American press has reported landings all across the Philipines.

UPI is reporting that Wake island some miles west of Midway has not been heard from since this morning's strike against Pearl Harbor.

The Americans are reporting that one of their battleships was heavily damaged in this morning's raid against Pearl Harbor and as many as 200 sailors and soldiers were killed in the attack.

Fallschirmjager -> RE: Flash (6/30/2004 2:11:55 AM)

Good PH attack Xargun.
But losing 30 some Kates is rough. All those elite prewar pilots.

rroberson -> War Department (6/30/2004 3:22:21 AM)

has announced that General MacArthur has been sacked as the head of forces defending the Philipines. It is felt that he was responsible for the destruction of AAF units caught on the ground in the December 7th attack.

The Navy Department has announced that Nimitz will be replacing Kimmel as CINCPAC commander. While no blame has been assessed for this morning's raid at Pearl Harbor the navy would like to have someone they feel can be more inspirational to the sailors and soldiers assigned to defending the US West Coast.

Raverdave -> RE: War Department (6/30/2004 3:49:26 AM)

Great ! I have been waiting for you guys to get into an AAR................should be fun!

Just remember what the AAR says is not always true [:D] Lots of those reported killed by Allied pilots were merely damaged and the highly skilled and courageous Japanese pilots managed to nurse many of them home to their carriers - where repairs are hurridly underway.

I also think that the Allied press is simply lying to their people - standard procedure for the corrupt governments of the West [:D]

Xargun -> Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 7:43:37 AM)

Well Dec 8th came and went and I think I'm going to execute Nagumo. He had strict orders to attack PH again and all he did was hit the airfield once and pounce on a fleeing US Destroyer TF. Now he is low on ammo will be ordered to withdraw - in disgrace I might add.

Everything went ok, I finally took some bases, but those damn Marines on Wake won't die. I took Guam and the Allies scuttled the MSW Penguin to avod it being captured. There was a not so vicious surface conflict just north of Lingayen (PI) where Rob sent a small TF of PT boats against my invasion fleet. The bombardment fleet blew the hell out of 5 PTs and left several others smoking cripples at a cost of two Allied torpedoes hitting home - one on a cruiser, one on a AP (I think).

My subs officially suck. I lost 5 subs in one day with one or two more crippled - probably not making it back to any base. 2 Were lost near PH, 1 in the Straits of Malacca - from the Repulse's battle grounp. Two more were lost off the coast of Soerbaja trying to interdict Allied escapees.

Not much else to report, other than PI seems to be going well - have 3 bases there now - whereas in Malaya I have taken none yet... oh well..

Here ya go.....

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 9:11:07 AM)

I see you are experiencing the Allied ASW Xargun![;)] Definitely the first thing that needs major adjustment. Can't believe Rob sent that big TF out...what a slaughter! He's gonna miss the escorts as the uber ASW he benefits from at the moment are only available if the ships exist.[:D]

rroberson -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 9:57:51 AM)

Had Nagumo done as ordered and I hadn't sent that TF out they would of been sitting at anchor awaiting their torpedos, I lose a few tin cans :) but most of my ships escaped....[:'(]

Escaped ? I don't think so [:'(]

Some serious taunting going on...bit of a niggle AAR.[:)]

kaleun -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 5:41:36 PM)

If mine warfare is useful in this game, he will miss that DM.

rroberson -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 6:08:01 PM)

There will be more :)....besides what else could I do....I "knew" he was going to hang around a 2nd day and bomb PH. I would of had I been in his shoes...(his first day of attacks had to appear less then satisfactory to him). My choices were to leave my ships tied to the pier and await their torpedos or at least try to get them the hell out of the harbor. :) That destroyer group got savaged to be sure, but I saved 90 percent of the ships that went streaming out of that harbor including a large precentage of merchants as well as heavier warships. If she could make steam she did. Now I personally hope KB hangs around for just 1 more day [:D].

freeboy -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 6:12:20 PM)

rrob,
Isn't that risky.. I mean if its badly damaged at pearl it gets fixed.. if it is out to sea it might burn down to the waterline.. float damage/sysdamage?????

rroberson -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 6:22:53 PM)

<smiles> I can imagine the orders coming from CINCPAC right now.....

No matter what else you do gentlemen, you will remain tied to the pier, we have to give those Jap bastards easy targets to torpedo. Sorry, risky or not, I was not going to leave ships tied to the pier awaiting their fate. This is the fighting navy. Besides I now have him precisely where I want him, I know where his carriers are :)...

freeboy -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 6:35:45 PM)

But your planes suck compared to what you'll have in about 4 months or so.. good luck

52nd Lowland -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 6:40:36 PM)

Are the US CVs in their historical positions at the start of the game ? Ie can the Jap player go hunting those nearest the KB or are they too far away from attack ?

From what I saw of an Allied 1st turn, both CVs are like 20 hexes west of PH and with both TF's speed about the same, there is almost NO chance of KB hitting the Allied CVs, unless he brings then back to PH right away - you never know though, thats why I sent planes for Naval attack and upped my CAP coverage for turn 2...

sven6345789 -> RE: Japan's Steady Advance (6/30/2004 7:37:04 PM)

btw, planes based at singapore were probably already underway when your Nell's and Bettys arrived.
