PTO: Midway
ETO: Bridge Too Far or Patton
WWI: The Lost Battalion
Civil War: Gettysburg

Overall: Patton. I'm an ETO junkie.

Extreme Honorable Mention: Band of Brothers. Not a movie but my current absolute favorite story about armed conflict. Even my wife loves BoB.

AlbA -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 5:00:52 AM)

It sooo has to be "A Bridge Too Far" which also gets my vote for the best score as well.

Halls of Montezuma
Sands of Iwo Jima

Platoon
Hamburger Hill
Siege of Firebase Gloria

To Hell and Back has got to be one of the greatest as was Sgt. York

gunnergoz -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 5:24:15 AM)

Pork Chop Hill. Gregory Peck as a company commander. Superb.

Bob Young -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 5:24:22 AM)

Two fine films I have not seen mentioned; from the other side of the pond:

Tuntematon sotilas (1955 version) [:D]
Cross of Iron
Das Boot

Jorm -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 6:05:41 AM)

A good WWi is the miniseries ANZAC's, 5 x 2 hour episodes and not just about galipolli, but much time spent on the western front. You can even see Paul Hogan ( crocodile dundee0 in one of his much better rolls

other than that "A bridge to far" is a true classic

freeboy -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 6:49:09 AM)

ok.. I thought the Bridges at To Ko Ri might have been the most faithful war movie.. somewhat unpopular do to the deaths of charactors we liked..

Copper -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 6:53:51 AM)

Bridge over the river kwai.
Zulu.
Patton.
Dr. Strangelove.
Midway.
War and Peace (Greatest Achievment in recent History)

Best movie has to be War and Peace though. It's a Soviet made film about the Franco Russian war of 1805-1812
Because it was made in 1969 there was no way of using computers to generate all the men needed to fight a battle, so the soviets gathered some 250,000 extras from their army and taught them to act, they each had authentic uniforms and were all nicely clothed. The battle scenes are just fantastic with 250,000 men slugging it out on film, and then insane camera angles were great. I think something like 200 horses actually died while filiming and so it was banned in some states by those Animal Rights Groups.

gunnergoz -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 7:17:05 AM)

Not to nitpick, but isn't "Dr Strangelove" more of a sci-fi film or even a satire? I never think of it as a war film, though it has that as a background.

pad152 -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 8:16:31 AM)

Some of the best

12 O'clock High
Battle of Britain
In Harm's Way

The worst:

Pearl Harbor Ben Aflack edition
(looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its a duck!)

Full Metal Jacket
(all marines are zombie killing manics AKA DOOM)

Apocolypse Now
(war movie on drugs set to doors music)

ZOOMIE1980 -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 8:24:22 AM)

Recently, Enemy at the Gates was a pretty good one. And the original Alamo with John Wayne is a personal favorite. Memphis Belle was pretty good. And a favorite of mine, not a real "War" movie, but For the Boys was pretty good.

Maliki -> RE: Fav War Films (7/1/2004 8:25:32 AM)

Just to keep it on a pacific theme and in no particular order:

Merrills Marauders

The sands of Iwo Jima

Guadacanal Diary

The fighting Seabees

Wake island

There was a movie about Ira Hayes that i watched but i can't remember the name,it left an impression though.

Back to Bataan

Bataan

That movie about Carlsons raiders and Makin Island(?)

Midway

basically anything about the Pacific because it is such an interesting theater of war.
