UncleBuck -> AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/8/2004 11:17:18 PM)

I got a question. I haven't found any information in the manual nor on the site here that explains how to use these ships. I know an AR is a repair ship and an AS is a Sub support ship, but how do you use them?

Mr.Frag -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/8/2004 11:23:13 PM)

AR = Repair Ship ... leave in in port to aid in repairing damaged ships

AS = Sub Tender ... allows torpedoes to be reloaded on hungry subs (acts like AR for SS's)

AD = DD Tender ... allows torpedoes to be loaded on other ships excluding PT boats (acts like AR for DD's)

AG = little barge ... low VP value for forward bases

AGC = Command ship ... used with Marine HQ's to give large bonus for amphib landings

AGP = PT Tender ... allows torpedoes to be loaded on PT boats. (acts like AR for PT's)

AP = Troop ship ... move large numbers of troops well

AK = Cargo ship ... moves non-troops well

UncleBuck -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/8/2004 11:27:09 PM)

Thanks Frag. I was just wonderign if these were desinged in WitP as forward support vessels. I know that in real life that is what they were. You could pull one of these babies up to a size 2 port and Viola it is a size 9 port for the support unit it represents. (I supported these things in real life in the Navy) I guess what I am askign is, what are the requirments for these to work? Do they need a minimum base size and supply value to provide support or are they self contained? Can I put a AS at a remote Island and refit/repair/supply say 4 subs on internal supply only?

Mr.Frag -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/8/2004 11:29:58 PM)

Only thing you'll need apart from the ship itself is supply at the base. Sounds like you know exactly what they are for [;)]

UncleBuck -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/8/2004 11:33:49 PM)

Ok thanks. I just started the Game Last night, I was in the Sierra Nevada Mountians camping for the 4th, so I got a late start. I started building Repair ships in San Fran, just wanted to be sure I was with the program as to there use. So you can send an AS with a nice AP/AK to a remote position and use it as a remote Sub base? Hmm that could be interesting. That seems like it may come in handy when trying to transit some of those weary subs in the PI back to the west coast or Pearl in about June July time frame.

Edited cause I can't Speel

MemoryLeak -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/9/2004 12:59:01 AM)

I seem to recall that you have to have minimum 20k supply at the base for the aux ship to function. Or is that only for the aux ship to be able to provide torps?

I'm not sure about the supply requirement for repair, but my AS and AD units are replacing torps at ports with under 5K of supply

Mr.Frag -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/9/2004 5:42:40 AM)

20k requirement is for aircraft not tenders.

By manual - and editorial by Mogami (or Kid) I think.. All tenders need is extra supplies at the base. And extra (in this definition) is anything more than twice what is needed at the base. So if the base needs 1000 supplies and has over 2000 tenders can replace spent ammo - probably the more supplies that are extra the more they can replace.

bradfordkay -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/9/2004 8:20:59 AM)

To clarify matter here a little, a synopsis of the rules is included here.

Torpedoes are the item item in question that needs to be reloaded.

The 20,000 supply rule is for PT boats in at least size 3 ports, unless an AGP is present, in which the port only needs to have sufficient supply.

Subs may only reload in size 8, 9, or 10 ports with sufficient supply or any base with an AS ship and sufficient supply.

Surface ship rules are the same as subs, except that an AD is required rather than an AS.

Minelaying ships may only reload in a size 9 or 10 port or a base with an MLE ship and sufficient supply.

I believe that the supply number on the base screen needs to be in the green (yellow, perhaps?) to be considered "sufficient".

Ok guys, since we are on the topic of these ships... how on earth do you use seaplane tenders? I assume that they are able to transport/launch seaplanes correct? I cannot figure out how to "land" or attach a seaplane squadron to a fleet of these ships. What am I missing?

Seaplane tenders do not have planes themselves... They merely provide maintenance for float planes.. You send the tender to a location and send the float planes there as well and the tender will provide maintenance for them.

AE=ammo ship, I think you use them in replenishment convoys for your carrier groups

One thing to clear, By "in port" does it mean in an TF created but docked or disbanded and so "in port but not part of any TF" to have them work?

AS, AD, and AGP acts like AEs for their respective classes, right, not ARs?

The more I play the game and IMHO, apart from the CV`s they are your most valuable ships, especially early in the Campaign Game .

You _really_ don`t want to lose USS Blackhawk and the 2 large AS`s up in Manila, especially if you plan on a fighting withdrawal to Darwin.

It`s a great reality feature that Matrix has added to WITP[8D]

Burkowski -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (7/15/2004 5:23:58 PM)

Indeed a great, realistic additional feature for WitP! I was very hesitant to give up that cargo-carrying capacity by converting a big handful of large AKs on Turn 1. But as the power of the support ships, especially ADs, ASs and MLEs sinks in as I find my way around the game, I understand that I am really extending my reach and projecting defensive power as IJN in Scen. 15. hmm, I have 2 AS ships in Batavia, 1 SS, 23k supplies, only 5k supplies needed but the sub there dont refit the torpedo tube. Port is 6. I'd thought AS ships will help the sub to reload the tubes ?

any ideas ?

thank you

Mr.Frag -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (8/2/2004 11:13:53 PM)

Mail me a save pls.

UncleBuck -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (8/2/2004 11:14:33 PM)

I don't know Heindorf,

I have several AS's in Kendari and they load them up no problem. Do you have them docked or are tehy still patrolling the harbor? That is the only thing I can think of.

UB

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (8/2/2004 11:27:42 PM)

they are in port like the other ships. save is mailed. Thank you

I came across the same thing before the patch with subs working out of Darwin. I had US subs reload thier tubes without a problem early on and go back out. Then after a bit I noticed that the Dutch subs I had moved down to home base there were not getting reloaded.

There was over 25k in suppy so that wasnt it but I did notice that the AS ship in port was American flagged ( I had sent all the other AS ships down to Brisbane) and I know that there are 2 Dutch flagged AS ships at the start of the game. In fact the Dutch subs had had no problems reloading from thier own AS ships when they were based up north at the start of the game. Only problem is I stopped playing to wait for the patch and didnt run a Dutch AS back up to Darwin to see if that would have some effect.

Might be worth taking a look at the nationality of the As ship and the subs involved.

Xargun -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (8/3/2004 8:35:31 AM)

As far as my experience as Japan has taught, there is no minimum port size with an AS to reload torps (never tried a size 0, size 1+). I have reloaded dozens of torps at Marcus and Wake Islands for my subs with no problem... Only time I had problem was when I had flt damage - which the rules clearly state that ANY float or fire damage will prevent the AS from performing its duties (or sys damage above 50).

So it must be some sort of nationality problem you are having. Sounds appropriate though. I'm sure US AS did not carry dutch or British torps on them.. They probably could, but just never did without special orders... So Dutch need to find a large port to rearm and the British might have some AS or not - I am not sure.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: AE's, AS's AE's Oh MY! (8/3/2004 10:22:39 AM)

I will see what I have in port, but I think that there is a dutch AS as well in my game(at least the ship class/name sounds dutch and the ship is looking different to the US/Brit AS class in port.) I will sent dutch subs and US subs into port and re-check and report here ( in 8 hours )

About nationality : I doubt that its checked within the allies becasue dutch ML ships can refit in Tricomalee ( British ) in my Scenario as well.

Well, Raymond is involved in this case too, he 's got a save game ,I am sure there is an explanation somewhere.
