50% CAP and short range works for me. I think it's random, or affected by weather, leaders, etc. Especially weather I think.

That is the reasonable explanation Sveint - but it has been a little 'too random' for me since the enemy - which supposedly should be more proned to launch unescorted strikes in 1942 - has been escorting most of his carrier strikes thus far. Weather has been the same for both parts and the tf's involved have usually involved 2 cvs (+ 1 cvl in the last incident). Guess I've been plain unlucky, but it's really unnerving and I'm really not looking forward to a future showdown with US cv's [:'(]

I launched 4 strikes from my cv's in yesterdays battle against the British, so it's strange that the escort got lost in all of them! Guess it was one large strike that got dispersed and then only the fighters failed to locate the target. Exactly the same thing that happened to the Soryu and Hiryu's strikes a few months ago...? My commanders have usually been supposedly the most capable ones - if Nagumo is busy elsewhere - I'd pick an admiral with high leadership and skill ratings that was best suited to command a carrier tf. Perhaps we could create a list over the 10 best IJN carrier commanders? I've been thinking about adding another element to this AAR, namely that of a Tabular Records of Movement or TROM. This TROM will follow a certain vessel from day to day and a weekly post will give you all the details. Seems like the Ca Atago it will be Madflava - your one voice got a 100% majority [;)] Will introduce the ship and start a TROM from the first of June 1942! Let's say she's getting a new captain then! A while since we've presented the overall situation as well, so I'll look into the lost-sunk stats tonight. Almost been to war for 6 months now, and it's been action all the way! Incredible really, another half a year of this and there will be a lot of green pilots and worn down ships and ground units around...!

As far as I can see, it should be possible to reach Dehli before the enemy - that could mean the end of India.... [:D] In the Indian Ocean the first Carrier Division is a deadly reaper and is hitting ship after ship - there must be 50+ enemies and they just cannot escape! 9 Vals were also transferred from Panaji to the Kaga - boosting her ac complement to 60. The only Allied success today was achieved by 3 Beauforts from Colombo - I had forgotten to put the damaged battleship Yamashiro on auto disband - and the enemy managed to put another torpedo into her. System damage is 66, flood 77 and there are 13 fires. Only the big size 9 port will prevent her from sinking, she will be out of the war for a long time, but that was also the case after the first torpedo struck her. Those old crates just doesn't stand up to modern torpedoes. Central/South Pacific I've been all over the map today and organized everything as good as I can. A lot of units were preparing for the wrong objectives, and there were quite a few remnant units that have to be remerged. Quite a few supply and fuel tf's have also been created - amazing how many small bases there are that need both fuel and supplies. Tomorrow the 2nd Carrier Division will dock at Singapore before taking on fuel and setting sail for Truk. The 2 Shokakus and the cvl carries only crack air crew and should come in very handy. Considered putting all the 100 Zeros on Rabaul on LRCAP above Lae - but decided against it. Have to conserve my strenght until I really need it. There are a lot of enemy tf's sailing around in the Coral Sea, gawd how I wish I got all my carriers here now. That would have made someone scream..! I'm afraid that without the 1st Carrier Division, it will be impossible to directly confront the enemies 5 carriers - but if I get an opening.... Let's look at the carriers that will soon face eachother: 1st Carrier Division: Shokaku & Zuikaku -> 148 ac Mini KB: CV Junyo, 2 cvl and 2 cve -> 200 ac A total of ca 350 ac The old cve Hosho will be used as a decouy ship...perhaps she can be of some use The US carriers are well known Yorktown, Hornet, Enterprise, Saratoga and Lexington - they all carry ca 90 ac bringing the total to ca 450 ac. If Al still keeps the useless Devastator torpedo bombers aboard, the forces will be rather equal in strength though. A direct confrontation will nevertheless see severe destruction to both sides, and I don't want this. It will be much more favorable to let the enemy invade another few bases and then launch a heavy counterstrike when surprise can be achieved and lba used in support of the carriers.

Attaching a few screenshots that will provide you with most of the numbers. A closer look at warship losses reveals that Japan has lost: 2 carriers 3 light cruisers 16 destroyers 10 minesweepers 10 minelayers 26 subs.... The Allies have lost: 1 carrier 3 battleships 1 battlecruiser 4 heavy cruisers 9 light cruisers 26 destroyers 4 subs (all Dutch :o - this says something about how useless Jap ASW is!) The rest of the ships are transports, smaller escorts etc. The score is 20975 to 6284 - a 3.338/1 ratio. All the remaining bases in India are worth 3300 points. If I in addition can destroy the Allied armies here and capture a few more bases in China, I should come very close to a 4-1 odds. I don't really care that much about scores, but I do play WitP to win. Having fun is always the most important reason to play, but total victory is always a good motivator! [;)] I'm really pushing hard, and the resources of Japan are really strained: Both IJA and IJN pools are empty!! The heavy air offensives in China were costly, and to replace Army fighter and bomber crew losses, the remaining 60 reserve pilots had to be used. There are 425 polit points available, and I will use them to release units from China. I don't get many new combat formations for the South Pacific, only base forces. Tabular Record of Movement for the heavy cruiser Atago A short backroung: The Takao Class Heavy Cruisers were the largest of the heavy cruisers built for the Japanese Navy. Four ships of the Takao class were built; TAKAO, ATAGO, MAYA, and CHOKAI. They were built in response to the heavy cruisers under construction by the United States and Great Britain during the 1920's. She was comparable in armament and speed with the NORFOLK and NORTHAMPTON classes. These ships were fast, powerful and heavily armed with enough firepower to hold their own against any ships built. All four ships of this class were formed into Sentai 4 and operated together for most of their careers. The Atago was completed in 1932 Displacement 15,781 tons Dimensions 661'9" x 68'0" x 20'9" Speed 34 knots Armament 10 x 8"/50 8 x 5"/40 DP up to 66 x 25mm AA 16 x 24" TT Crew 773 First the historical TROM from 1932-1941 will be presented. We will then skip the first 6 months of the war, and continue it from the 2nd of June 1942! 30 March 1932: The ATAGO is completed by the Kure Navy Yard and commissioned in the IJN. 26 October 1936: Kobe. The ATAGO embarks the Emperor Hirohito (Showa) and departs for Etajima. 28 October 1936: The ATAGO arrives back at Kobe. The next day, the Emperor participates in the annual Imperial Naval Review held off Kobe. 30 October 1939: Reconstruction of the ATAGO's hull and bridge is completed at Maizuru. Her new AA armament and fire control system are installed at Yokosuka. 11 August 1941: Captain (later Rear Admiral), the Baron, Ijuin Matsuji (son of Fleet Admiral Ijuin Goro) assumes command from Captain (later Vice Admiral) Koyanagi Tomiji who is reassigned as the CO of KONGO. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 June 1942: Captain Ijuin Matsuji (Leadership(Inspiration 66/68) is still in command of the Atago and the ship lies at Anchor in the great naval base of Truk. The ship is almost at 100% repair, and crew day/night experience is 66/68. The ships also carries 1 Jake and 2 Pete search planes. (Is it a coincident that both the crews day/night exp and the captains leadership/inspiration ratings are the same - 68/68?) The ship is the flagship of the First Cruiser Division under the command of Rear Admiral Tanaka. As I mentioned earlier, it is rather fitting that it held out until now - my army in western India is now in a great position to cut the defenders off from Dehli. Still having problems moving units, especially if they get new orders while stationary on the railroad. Several of them refuse to move more than 5 miles pr day even on rail - driving me nutters... The little apd that was spotted in the middle of the Bay of New Japan a few days ago turned out to be the HMS Warspite!! This severely damaged bb has been sent out to escape faith - insolence, I've DESERVED those ship! [:@] Unfortunately my dd's didn't manage to torpedo the old hulk. I must assume that the rest of the bb's are also on their way - so Operation Finalize has been ordered: Betties have been put on naval attack in Trimcomalee, Madras, Chandpur, Rangoon and Singapore. Several surface tf's have been sortied - one is made up from moderately damaged cruisers and destroyers at Trimcomalee. Another is made up of an AV, its 8 float planes will try to locate the enemy ships. The final part of this operation consists of the light carrier Ryujo. VADM Ozawa has been given 2 CS, 1 cl and 3 dd's as escort, and the 19 Kates and 28 Zeros should be more than enough to make sure that justice is fulfilled! [;)] In the meanwhile the 2nd Carrier Division under VADM Nagumo leaves Singapore. 27 Vals were taken aboard and the fleet consisting of 2 cv's, 1 ca, 1 cl and 4 dd's is now heading for Truk. Car Div 1 continues to hunt down the fleeing ships on the west coast of India - it's quite a sight..almost feel sorry for them. A little amazed that Al hasn't sent the ships away piecemeal over the last few months. No good having 200 ships at Karachi when the enemy is knocking at the door... Central/South Pacific Wewak is now operational as a size 4 af, and the first 27 Sallys were moved in. If Lae is invaded, Wewak will field a heavy force of medium bombers that will hit the enemy ground units. I'm pretty sure the enemy carriers have moved to Noumea to refuel - so I've iniciated Operation Goodbye & Good Riddance! [:D] The aim of this operation is to hit the enemy transport and warships that have been observed in the area, as well as give the troops and ac based here a heavy pounding. Tarawa is now a size 2 port/3 af - and there must be 40-80 fighters here and at least 18k troops. The following TF's have been formed: TF162 - the Bombardment group under Rear Admiral Matsunaga The battleship Hiei leads this group followed by 5 ca's, 1 cl and 8 dd's. TF161 - the Surface Combat group under Rear Admiral Tanaka. This group consists of the First Cruiser division and got 5 ca's, 2 cl's and 8 dd's TF163 - the Escort group under Rear Admiral Harashima This is a small group based around the old escort carrier Hosho - she only carries 9 Zeros. In case the enemy cv's or lba should find the tf's, it is hoped that the Zeros can disrupt the attacks and perhaps draw the bombers away from the captial ships. 3 destroyers escorts the carrier that will have to follow the other groups at flank speed to keep up. The entire roundtrip will begin at Truk, move to Tarawa and then sail to Kwajalein before returning to Truk. Naval bombers at Kwajalein and Maloetap will try to hit the enemy ships as soon as the fighters on the ground has been hit by the bombardment. It is really difficult for Wobbly to defend Tarawa, especially before he has built it up to a size 4 af and placed heavy coastal defences as well as powerful air units there. The 3rd 8" turret is actually a centerline weapon - doesn't really have a good arc of fire, but gives the ship some extra firepower. This is happening too often to be explained by leaders etc. I would have thrown the PC out of the window by now if it was happening to me ... What are the settings of your CV fighter groups? Also, I presume that no Air Combat TF has more than 200 planes in order to avoid the un-coordination rule? EDIT I just noticed that in the most recent report the problem seems to have gone away. What changed? Sorry, I can't help but go into tech support mode sometimes ... ;)

Japan kills a lot of Allied troops in the Phi, DEI etc. Al has played very well and I've not managed to destroy many units in either Burma, India or China. I certainly get a lot of points for capturing key bases though. No matter how it all ends, I'm going to try to accumulate the biggest lead possible - if not the war might end very early cause Al is already one year ahead of schedule in the South Pacific. Cruft - I really don't know whether the problem is solved or not! I've not put all my Zeros on max range, set them to 40 or 60% CAP and deleted their previous target settings. Several of my smaller raids against unprotected transports are escorted...those that really doesn't need an escort [:'(] The Japanese are much more likely to get away with massing their cv's in 42 than the Allies, but as you've seen - the cv battles this far has never included more than 180 ac in on tf at the most. It's therefore horrifying that ALL my strikes against enemy cv's have been unescorted. There's a stink somewhere and I'm really not feeling confident about engaging enemy cv's anymore. Afraid there will be a showdown in the South Pacific within a month or two though..then we'll see! If all my crack pilots takes off unescorted again, the puter may go out the window!-)

If your aircraft have target settings they won't escort anything outside that target. I found that out after PH. I could not get my zeroes to escort anything until I deleted the target. Everything went fine after that.

Can never get too much praise, right? :) Anyway, regarding the Japanese CV commanders, I'll put up 7 of them (10 seems a bit too much since there is no way a Jap will have 10 AC TFs going about the place at one time), and those ARE the top 7 (notice a sharp drop in quality). I'm not sure about their rank though: 1. Abe,T 76 2. Yamaguchi,T 76 3. Nagumo,C 76 4. Ugaki,M 67 5. Sakamaki,M 63 6. Sugiura,K 58 7. Takagi,T 44 This is where rank question comes in. I don't know if higher rank has any benefits on command of the TF. Will an ADM outperform a CPT with the same skill? I know the question had been asked on many occasions but I don't recall there ever being a straightforward answer. So go with what your gut is telling you and try to keep the choich between the top 3 ;)

Arstadvidios - there might be something in this, getting some conflicting feedback from other players - so I would like to hear more about other peoples experiences! If it's really the case, something is in need of a fix [;)] Thx, Honda! Never enough praise [8D] Personally, I would assume that a Cpt that is qualified to command a carrier does this outstanding...as long as he's only commanding one carrier. A Rear Admiral could be competent to command 2, Vice Admiral 3 and a full Admiral 4. Then penalties would be given according to their skills and number of ships and ac under their command. Again, I would like to get some more feedback regarding this issue as well. Playing WitP based upon 'I think so' and assumptions would be asking for trouble..... Btw. is it only me, or does anyone else have problems with posing replies? My laptop sometimes ignores it when I press 'quote' or 'post reply' to posts, but the 'fast reply' button always work. The search for Warspite and other blocade runners continues. No fewer than 60!! enemy transports were spotted in the Indian Ocean today - I only managed to sink 3-4 each day. Wobbly is a little frustrated, the edge of the map is preventing their dispersal. Personally I found the timing a little awkward, I would have sent 4-5 transport away with supplies along the top of the map every 3rd day or so. That's why I'm suspecting that he's using the transports to cover something else...perhaps the convoys I initially spotted in the area. They might be carrying troops. It kinda reminds me of Convoy PQ17 - it will most likely suffer heavy losses before the survivors can get away. When I feel I've had my fair share, the carriers will quietly slip away to replenish. The attack on the Indian Bde that had marched down the west coast of Burma sent it into the jungle. We have now cut India of from Burma by placing troops in the 3 hexes just east of Asansol and Dacca. Tomorrow we enter Jamshedpur, 18000 enemy troops reported here, there are only 2-3000 left in Diamond Harbour. China 100k troops are now marching into Ichang, the closes Chinese base to the railroad line. I'm contemplating whether operations in China should come to an end or not. We have achieved more than what was historically possible by now, and the ground combat model isn't too impressive. This could mean lessening my chance of winning an auto victory, but this isn't the most important factor here. I don't want to take too much advantage of the system, fighting on one continent at a time is more than enough for me. Central/South Pacific An enemy transport sank on its way from Tarawa today, I'm pretty sure Al is busy bringing in supplies, fuel etc. In 4 days the bombardment group will strike! I'm now feeling more confident as the defenses are being reinforced each day. Each of the main bases, Truk - Rabaul and Kwajalein will soon have their own engineer regiment as well as heavy garrisons. The main line of defense runs from Lae -> Rabaul in the Solomons while Kwajalein and its supporting islands makes up the eastern flank in the Marshalls. A division and engineer regiment shock attacks an Indian Division on the railroad south of Bombay. They're heavily repulsed and suffers a shocking 3400 casualties! We have to wait for reinforcements before clearing the rail. In the South Pacific enemy tf's are again spotted at Lunga and heading west in the Coral Sea. More mines are laid at Lae, Rabaul, Shortland and Kwajalein and more troops are unloaded at Truk. In 1-2 days the bombardment groups will hit Tarawa!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/07/42 India Another 6-7 transports were hit in the Indian Ocean today. The Cvl Ryujo is now only a few hexes east of a tf identified as a ca - this might be the fleeing Warspite. With a little luck she will wear 6 torpedoes by tomorrow [:D] Ground combat in India continues and I'm confident that Bombay will be under siege within a week or so. The same with Lucknow - and when these two bases have been taken we will move both east and west and put siege to Delhi at the same time as we march towards Karachi. I will consider to land a division by sea as well, I want to assert as much pressure as possible. My BB's will play a significant role here, and I really have to bring in a lot of fuel - they're thirsty beasts of burden [:'(] I don't really have much use for my Nells (there are no only 10 left in the pools, and most of my Daitais have been upgraded to Betties) and Betties in India, so I will leave 3 Daitais and send the others back to Singapore were they will recieve replacements and stay in reserve. The Armys Sallys and Lily's will have to suppress the enemy ground troops. Several large base forces will soon be unloaded at Madras and engineers are developing Bangalore and Hyderabad to size 4 af's. My main bases for the final assault on India will be Bombay for Karachi and Lucknow for Dehli. South Pacific For several days the enemy air units at Tarawa have been strafing my ground units - the Tomahawks are escorting the Wildcats. My bombardment group is only 3 hexes west of the place now and was spotted, don't know what Al will make of this but there are still a '5 ca tf' in the hex. If he moves it, the island will receive a tremendous pounding. To ensure the destruction of the enemy ships, I've ordered both tf's to 'do not retire' and to engage in surface combat. Then both tf's will bombard before heading back to base. Sincerely don't hope there are enemy cv's in the area, but I've decided that they're far away near Nomea or in the Coral Sea. Let's hope my intel doesn't let me down... I'm pretty happy with the situation in Rabaul now, 110 Zeros are on CAP and there are now 3 forts. 330 engineers are bringing another one up each week though and another heavy AA regiment + a tank regiment have been unloaded. No way Al is getting anywere in the South Pacific for another 6 months or so!! My next objectives are to reinforce Shortland and build a stronger reserve at Truk - I want a reaction force of at least 30k troops that can be dispatched on short notice.
