Apologies for a somewhat off-topic question for Dave: is Japanese a difficult language to learn? I spent a week or so there a few years ago and was surprised at how heavily I had to lean on my "restaurant Japanese" to get around. Is it possible to teach oneself to read or understand? I'm pretty good with languages -- French and Russian anyway -- so I'm curious.

If you've been able to learn Russian as a second language, then you will find Japanese a challenge but not a shock. I studied a handful of other languages before taking on Japanese and it was still quite a steep learning curve. What made it possible at all was that I spent several years taking all of the Continuing Education classes in Japanese that my local colleges and universities offered. Those courses gave me the fundamentals to allow me to set myself a good self-study program. But the real key to success for me has been the fact that I usually watch anywhere from a half hour to several hours of Japanese TV programming, either via digital downloads or via recorded media, every day. My big challenge nowadays is to build my skill at reading and remembering kanji - the Chinese writing charaters that the Japanese use for nouns and verb beginnings. I already know the other two Japanese writing systems, hiragana and katakana well. I see this as a lifetime learning experience and find it to be an enjoyable intellectual exercise.

Playing wargames, on the other hand, is just plain gut-level fun. [:D]

Yes, PzB did kindly send a turn to me, and after many hours of pondering and thinking, I've sent it back. So now I'll stop perusing this report and start my own.

I doubt that I'll be able to entertain everyone as well as PzB does, or Wobbly did, but as ZonkerH and Tophat know, I do have my own ways of "making war interesting". [;)]

Please do. I'd love to see this continued. The next six months will not be fun, but you can prevail. PzB, you wouldn't stand a chance against the green Soviet toad cosmonaut thing - whatever Dave's picture is.

Nan ja kore wa?! Keroro Gunsou (Sergent Frog) is a bonafide alien invader who is actively involved with conquering Japan on a weekly basis. [;)]

I'll trust that you didn't just call my mother a toad, too.

Are you starting a new thread or continuing the Sand in the Vaseline thread? Personally, I think the thread title sent Wobs some subliminal messages that doomed him to failure.

Good luck and fare well, my green frog cosmonaut!

Hornblower -> RE: The struggle continues? (3/4/2005 8:33:18 PM)

Congratulations. Sorry to see the AAR go- truth be told...[&o]

PzB74 -> The struggle continues! (3/4/2005 11:04:43 PM)

NEWSFLASH![/b] Negotiations with the enemy have broken down. A new CinC has taken over command of the Allied land, sea and air forces in the entire Pacific.

David is going to take over for Wobbly and the first turn has already been played. I will continue this AAR as before, I assume that David will start a new thread for his.
The turn I originally sent to Wobbly therefore landed in Canada instead of Kiwi land! Murphy got confused and I suffered no less than 3 magazine explosions in one batlle [;)]
David has immediately implemented a new strategy, and I got a few costly surprises. It will be necessary to develop new tactics in order to counter this new threat. Confidence in ultimate victory is
still high and an extra effort will be made in order to defeat India and chase the enemy from Java. [:D]

Situation Report

Tony and Tojo fighter production has been stepped up considerably. Next month both models become available, and I'm looking forward to converting some Nates. Ahh yes! [;)]

India

At first I didn't dare to move my Army bombers into Bombay - but Wobbly only wanted to bomb my ground forces. I didn't get a chance to reconsider, cause
David immediately ordered massive strikes. My fighters will be put on 90% CAP for tomorrow. I'm mostly interested in reducing their striking capabilities, so if the bombers continue to
come in unescorted....

The loss of the surface group was unfortunate. I didn't expect to find that many Allied ships there! The battle fleet has reformed in Bombay and refueled. The Kongo has been dispatched together
with a ca and dd. The other 4 battleships will attempt to finish the Allied fleet once and for all. I'm pretty sure David will confront them.

A regiment has been ordered into Dehli - my army has now moved out of Lucknow and will reach the place in 10 days or so. The ferocious struggle in Ahmadabad continues, and it's possible
that I have to wait for reinforcements before it falls. Enemy losses are much higher than mine, so I don't see any reason to stop attacking.

Java

All the enemy ships have left Java! I'm now going to rest my AF in Sumatra and Borneo. In a week or so we will continue to hit the enemy fields.
We got sizeable ground units in both Sumatra (Palembang) and Borneo now. I wish to consolidate my position and try to isolate Java. I need another 2 months to defeat India, in October we're going
to move forces down to Java and recapture the island. Then we will go onto the defensive and await the next enemy onslaught.

Lots and lots of enemy ships have been spotted west in the Indian Ocean. No sight of enemy battleships, I believe they've all gone to Perth. So I'm going to try to intercept the fleeing ships.

China

Many Nate Daitas have been moved to China, they will start advanced training ASAP! The Zero pilots that have been strafing the Chinese have gained extremely many exp points.
I'm now confident that it's going to be possible to train a new cadre of fighter pilots.

Fornadan -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/4/2005 11:19:51 PM)

It's alive!!!!!!!!

October 42 sounds awfully late for a major Japanese offensive.

How soon do you think the Allies will be able to launch a minor invasion elsewhere?

wobbly -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/5/2005 12:20:06 AM)

Hurrah - I can read this one now.

he managed to get the bombers to hit Bombay - what did he give them suddenly - extra rum? They refused to contemplate it under my control. I tried adding Warhawks to the mix. Thought you just had major fighter numbers above the base - turns out you did have plenty - but they still flew.

3 magazine explosions - the rapture - the joy. The confusion?? What did he do differently?

The surface fleet that attacked you in Karachi was actually aiming to Bombard Bombay!

He's taken the surface fleet out of Tjilitap!! I think maybe he knows something I didn't!

3 magazine explosions and a swag of lost aircraft - wow - what a change a new captain can make!

. . . Yes, and give PzB advice based on experience. Knowing the Allied position as well as you do, wouldn't you recomment that the Japanese withdraw to an inner defense ring as soon as possible? And the northern route to Tokyo is left wide open, don't you think? If PzB only knew the hammer that is about to fall upon him . . .

Doesn't seem fair does it? Take solace in the fact that it really is a roll of the die, and it just didn't roll right for you. Too bad these magazine explosions didn't happen for you on the last turn so you could sleep with a smile. I am looking forward to reading your comments on both threads, Wobbly.

PzB74 -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/5/2005 3:54:43 AM)

Yep, it's very much alive Fornadan [8D]
It's perfectly ok to invade, even in 1943 if the odds are favorable. The important thing is to bring superior force. As long as I got the KB and a sizeable airforce, I can
land all the divisions I want on Java. The Allied carriers fled head over heels, so I assume that they're not strong enough to confront me!

Minor invasion...well, it can't be in the Marshall or Solomons. I've fortified those areas heavily. It would take a major effort to invade there. Perhaps Wake, Shortland
or Gili Gili can be captured, but I don't expect more than this before 1943. David said he first would need 3 months, and then 6 to prepare. Hope he's right.

Al, I think it's really about hammer size. The side with the biggest hammer usually pulls the longest straw. Bring more and better ships, land more hits and win.
In yesterdays battle I brought a small tf, had hoped to pick of a few stray vessels. The loss of the flagship early in the battle settled it.

Thought you would go and bombard Bombay, evacuated all the transports and brought the battleships back home. The cat would have been home in other words.
The Allied ships do pose a threat against my slow battlewagons now - their torpedoes are highly functional. So I'm going to send in the whole sink in and try to overpower them.

I'm a little worried about Java, but I feel confident in India - as long as I can pull it of there I should be able to strike back. One last effort, and then a few months for R&R [&o]

pauk -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/5/2005 10:29:45 AM)

Congratulations!

I'm looking foward to follow your AAR with David. I'm pretty sure that community here expect this AAR will continue till the end of the game, so i hope you and David will continue yours game even if 4:1 odds will be achived on january 43.

Wobbly and you done great job, you learned us lots of important things, and we all looking forward to see Japan struggle in the 44 and 45!

BTW, did you know that your AAR is on the top? (more than 50 hits per replay)?

BlackVoid -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/5/2005 1:31:01 PM)

Best AAR. Too bad Wobbly could not take it anymore.

Grotius -> RE: The struggle continues! (3/5/2005 4:01:05 PM)

One of the appealing things about this AAR is that you can hear what each guy is thinking. It's fun to watch them strategize in parallel. By contrast, in the traditional "joint AAR," each side has to be cagey about his intentions. Of course, the joint AAR has its advantages too -- e.g., the Luskan-Raver banter.

PzB74 -> The end of the 'Big E' (3/5/2005 6:33:56 PM)

Thx guys! This type of AAR wasn't my idea originally. Wobbly and Herbie started doing it with an UV pbem gae.
It's certainly encouraging that so many wishes to read what we write Pauk! [:)] Hopefully we can keep it interesting...it's been a very intensive game that's for sure!

More bloodshed today....

Situation Report

India

David put all his bombers on naval attack today. They score quite a few hits, but I'll gladly shoot down his bobmers in exchange for hits on empty transports.
Don't really have a use for them as the planned amph. landing in Karachi was cancelled.

The battle for Ahmadabad will most certainly drag on until the other half of my Army will arrive. Will David attempt to defend Dehli? I don't think so, I've isolated it so well
that he may have to retreat into the bush if he makes a stand.

Java

Yesterday I split my carrier groups - it was a risk but I'm pretty certain that the operational Allied carriers have fled to Perth and abandoned the rest of the fleet to its destiny.
The Big E was found and sunk today. I think her escort got detached as one of my seaplane tenders ran into 2 enemy destroyers. A heroic stand by her escort saved her from damage.
Seems like the Allied warships are all heading for Derby or Darwin - I'm on a perfect intercept course. (See picture)

Carnage tomorrow?

The cruiser division will attempt to intercept enemy transports, but will do so within 5 hexes of Tjilitjap. This will enable them to perform a quick bombardment run there.

Situation Report

India

I have cancelled the surface mission to Bombay - the Swordfish did it again. I will wait until the situation becomes more favorable
and a bigger fighter escort can be provided. The renewed Wellington strike against Bombay again succeeded in destroying many ac on the ground.

If David tries to put up a fight in Dehli, I may need another 2 weeks or so to reach Ahmadabad. It will be interesting to see what happens.
3 regiments have surrounded the city and he will have to fight his way both in and out. One regiment is actually on its way into the city from the north.

A situation map over the India/Burma front is provided today. I don't know how many enemy troops there are in Dimapur.
The plan is to advance on Imphal with a Para reg and an SNLF unit. Paras will also be dropped on Kashima. I wish to create an Empire that is connected, from
Karachi and all the way to Russia.

Java

I spent quite a lot of time re-organizing my units today. The naval bombers around Java will be withdrawn as the Allied ships have left. Army bombers will replace them. I'm also hoping to withdraw a few Zero Daitais and send them to Bombay in order to bolster the CAP there.

The carriers are converging in the Indian Ocean - there will most likely be several violent strikes soon. The bombardment of Tjilitjap was also cancelled, the TF has been ordered to join up with the carriers instead. One thing at the time.

SS 5 - 37 [:(]
ML ? forgot to check - 13
MSW 27 - 17

6 Japanese ships have been sunk by mines, only 2 Allied ships share their fate.
Most Allied ships have been sunk by long lance torpedoes while 500 and 1000lb bombs have caused most of the Japanese sinkings

The Prince of Wales is reported to have been sunk by 16.1/45 guns. The Nagato got credited with the sinking even though 7 torpedoes also hit home.

Over the next 6 months the following major naval units will arrive:

CV Hiyo in 21 days
1 cvl and 1 cve in ca 140 days
BB Musashi 174 days
1 cl in 124 days
4 dds within 70 days
5 subs within 136 days

Not alot...but I hope that the bulk of my damaged ships will have been repaired by the end of the year and thus providing me with a still strong fleet.

Top pilots:

Po2 Oda 94 exp. 51 missions and 15 kills. F2 Ominata Daitai - A6M2
Po2 Murakami 86 exp. 52 missions 14 kills. F1 Omura Daitai - A6M2
Ltjg Kubota 86 exp. 34 missions 13 kills. F1 Yamada Daitai - A6M2

Oscar I pilot with 5 kills
A6M3 pilot with 5 kills
Nate pilot with 4 kills

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/6/2005 1:18:01 AM)

Hold on PzB! Now that the main threat in Java has passed by , concentrate yourself on India and fly over the 4-1 ratio!!!
[&o][&o][&o]

PzB74 -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/6/2005 2:23:44 AM)

Couldn't have kept it going without support from the Jap fan boy association on this forum [8D]

Oh well, the threat in Java hasn't actually passed by - it's still very much in place. Perhaps we can say that it's stationary for
the time being. Just like a Russian bridgehead, leave it alone and it will one day spring a deadly spear through your defenses.

The idea is to keep losses to a minimum from now on. Every operation will be conducted with overwhelming force. That's the only way to achieve a
4-1 autovictory. I'm not sure it can be done, but if it can - I hope that David would like to continue the game! It's the thrill of the hunt, not the kill.

I was thinking about whether it is wise to keep on attacking in Ahmadabad without resting the troops, but the new forts that will be built would cost me perhaps even higher casualties. Almost 10k Jap points have been harvested from land combat alone against 900 Allied. So I you loose points when units are destroyed, daily attrition is far less costly.

"Now I know why the emperor keeps them red guards all to himself..." [:D]

Ron Saueracker -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/6/2005 2:32:08 AM)

May she fills that well, or it wears her well or something. Full Meal Deal there![sm=00000622.gif]

wobbly -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/6/2005 5:56:32 AM)

David definately has a very different style. I didn't want to sortie the ships in Tjilitap knowing hte KB was loitering with intent off Java. Maybe he didn't know or thought it better to try the break out than to stay in Port getting hammered. I rather liked the damage I was doing to your airfoces in Java for the paltry hit here and there with torpedos.

I wondered if you would try and come through burma - I'll keep quiet about what's there.

Poor Big E - she just wouldn't stop gaining flooding damage - I didn't know whether to aim her back at Tjilitap or to leave her in teh West. Seems I made the wrong choice and now Dave has to live with it.

The Bombardment at Bombay would have been undertaken depending on where your ships were placed at the beginning of the next day. If I though you could reach I would retire - all to keep you wondering.

PzB74 -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/6/2005 7:51:37 PM)

I've applied for a private company of red guards [:D]

That probably means that there are 50k troops in Dimapur Al....well, have to check it out.
Paras are trying to cut it of tomorrow - a unit is already seen moving towards the rear.
This may be in response to my move out from Imphal.

Situation Report

India

David is sending the kitchen sink against my ships. The Kirishima took many bomb hits, something which caused sys damage to go up 4-5 points.
There are now only 20 damaged bombers left at the base.

Today units from the two army groups joined hands south of Dehli. The enemy that is retreating from Lucknow moved east of Dehli. Will they try to go around
the city in order to reach Ahmadabad? If I'm luck Ahmadabad falls while the troops are moving between the cities [:D]

An SNLF unit will be dropped behind Dimapur tomorrow simultanously as the army moves in. An unidentified Allied unit was observed moving in this direction today.
It IS possible that the Allies got more troops than I can handle here: Combat troops counting more than 30k men will be hard to dislodge, especially since I don't
have any engineer regiments.

Java

No sign of the large enemy TF that was sighted yesterday. Naval search planes found 2 damaged cruisers and dispatched of them. I'm going to move closer towards
Java and see what I can find. A base force is being air lifted into Bali - 12 Dinah search planes have already been moved in.

My air force in the DEI is still a mess - will take another week to receive replacements and reduce fatigue. No more operations until then, I want to avoid high losses
unless sacrifice is required. Hundreds of Nates have been moved to Burma and China and will commence strafing runs against isolated enemy units. This will hone
pilot skills. My Nate pilots acutally make up my strategic air reserve. In 6 months they will all be flying adequate ac...at least compared to Nates and Oscar Is [:o]

Situation Report

India

The hex that David moved into east of Dehli is a '12 day hex' as I call it. It takes 12 days to move out of it *mohaha* [sm=00000622.gif]
There is a full UK div and 3 indian divisions + a base force and aviation unit + other supportive elements in Dehli, and it will take me some time to reduce it.
So here is the revised plan: a full division will move into Dehli, I'm confident that the enemy will be unable to drive it out. Then the rest of the army moves due east and into Ahmadabad. I think I can be there before the enemy units. If successful the enemy will retreat towards Karachi and the units around Dehli will be cut of
and can be destroyed before we march on the capital. This will save us considerable time and effort!

A bombardment attack has been ordered in Dimapur, have to check enemy strength and rest a day before starting the assault.
The para drop failed to capture Jorhat, but Dimapur is now cut of. It will take a combat unit to destroy the small elite SNLF unit.

Java

The enemy battleship and cruiser squadron was again spotted - it has moved quickly west and is getting closer to the edge of the map. Car Div 1 and 3 will make attempt to intercept. My cruiser tf that was attacked outside Java yesterday met with Car Div 1 and transferred 2 cl in exchange for t he BB Hiei and a heavy cruiser. A renewed bombardment attack against Madion will be made. Our army bombers will conduct another airfield strike as well tomorrow. No enemy fighters here it seems. I wish to reduce the Allied naval striking capability - then we can bombard at will.

Bali is now operational and 12 another recon unit has moved in from the Philippines. I'm going to monitor all of Davids moves. Surprisingly he has ceased all offensive operations on the island and has withdrawn into Soerabaja and Tjilitjap [&:] Ok - this means that it will be possible to move in reinforcements and slowly
build a russian bridge head <G>

Anyone played Beahc Head I & II on the C64?

Situation Map: Daitai training

Take a look at this: After only a few weeks training, this Daitai has now almost a full compliment of trained pilots! When I started they had ca 40 in average
exp. More and more fighter groups will now be rotated into China.

[image]local://upfiles/1466/Lj220414716.gif[/image]

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 1:42:20 AM)

61 exp? Trained pilot?? Are you sure mate? I consider a pilot worth of using a zero only when he gets above 70! And it's a long run to get to 70 exp average, believe me!
I think that under 70 you are just throwing those poor guys in Trashcan. The allied by mid 42 have plenty of 60 exp pilots...you need to be better than them!

PzB74 -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 1:49:18 AM)

Officially all pilots with 50 exp and up are considered to be trained... Replacements with 20-30 exp are useless, so I take a 50 exp pilot any day.
We'll continue to train them and see how fast this Daitai can become a 'crack unit'!

Half of my Daitais in the front have 30+ % green pilots. That's why I'm taking such heavy losses.

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 1:52:33 AM)

Yes, i understand. That's why i always switch "no replacement" for my front units. When one daitai has been trained up to 70 i divide it in 3 sub-groups and disband them in the front units. The Mogami mothod[8D]

PzB74 -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 2:31:33 AM)

That's a valid approach - I've used it myself several times. It got one catch, a major one though: When you get involved in heavy fighting lasting more than
3 months, it means that you will have to disband more Daitais than you can afford. It takes 90 days to get em back..much too long really.

So I allow my trained Daitais to receive poor quality reinforcements, some of them survive and becomes adequate pilots. When I got more poor pilots than good ones, I retire the squadron and send it of to China or some other less dangerous place to train.

I really need 2nd rate Army fighters to perform less important missions - this will take some of the pressure of my Zeros. Impossible as long as you're not even allowed to upgrade your Nates to Oscar I's.

Btw: anyone know a good way to train inepxerienced naval bomber pilots [:'(]
Guess they go to China too....

Situation Report

India

It seems like the Allied AF in India has shot its bolt! The strikes are now smaller and there are not much to destroy in Bombay.
All fighters are on 90% CAP!

I changed my mind according to Dehli - my troops moved very quickly up the railroad and I can have 4-5 divisions assaulting the
city in a few days. My 160+k troops shouldn't have any problems reducing the place. Ahmadabad is slowly being dispatched of...

Dimapur may be a difficult nut to crack - if there are more than 3-4 forts!! Tomorrow will show.

Java

I'm now getting better control over the situation and I'm able to deliver very heavy air strikes against all of the enemy bases on Java.
Tomorrow a battleship TF will bombard Madion - todays mission was a success as the enemy bombers there took a heavy beating.
The army bombers will rest today, then they're going to hit another nest.

The KB finally caught up with the fleeing enemy fleet! For the cost of 10 Kates and 2 Vals we caused severe damage! 1 battleship, 2 cruisers and numerous destroyers were left sinking. I can't see much hope for the remainder of the enemy ships. The 2nd Car Div is racing towards the action and tomorrow will bring about more destruction.

By destroying most of the enemy fleet, we could buy us another 6 months to a year. Perhaps this will make him unable to conduct major offensive operations before late 43, or even early 44!!

We're going to show David were Goliath bought his beer this time [:D]

Captain Cruft -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 3:40:53 PM)

quote:

ORIGINAL: PzB
Btw: anyone know a good way to train inepxerienced naval bomber pilots [:'(]

Put them on Naval Search somewhere where they will make a lot of sightings. They'll be up in the 80s before you know it ...

At least that's how UV worked. Exp gain is directly related to number of sightings made.

Or, alternatively, you might try Recon if you can avoid the pilots getting too fatigued. It seems that the basic exp gain per mission is highest with Recon than anything else. Also, using Betties for Recon doesn't really leave much of the map that you can't see ...

Or, how about a combination of the two. Say Recon + 20/30% Naval Search. That's what I use with Dinahs etc. and the pilots that survive get up to the 80s/90s in a few weeks (starting from 60s).

pauk -> RE: The end of the 'Big E' (3/7/2005 8:33:20 PM)

hi,

my vote for training bombers is China (or any other front without allied air power present there).

As for training method. You don't have wait 90 for rebuilding disbanded daitais. There is another (faster) way for training...

search the forum for "Working title: Zen and the Art of Japanese Training Program"....

i have two PBEM going on. In one i'm using this "variation of Mogami method". In other i agreed with my opponent not to use it because it could be considered as gamey tactic.

PzB74 -> Allied Disaster in the Indian Ocean (3/7/2005 9:11:28 PM)

Thanx for the advice guys! I've already put a fee Betty Daitais on recon and search missions. We'll see what works out!
I've read about the 'Mogami method' Pauk. Using ak's to load stranded remnants is a little too awkward for me. China is now my training grounds.
Not much chance that Allied fighters and bombers can use bases here anymore [:D]

Really felt sorry for David today: wouldn't have liked to be on the receiving end of todays barrage... [8|]

Situation Report

India

Again we reduced the forts in Ahmadabad - considered a shock attack tomorrow but decided against it. Casualties are usually horrible and we're reducing
the enemy day by day now. A quick count turned up 181k troops that are about to head into Dehli. There are ca 133k troops in Ahmadabad. A total of 312k troops will then be available for the assault on Karachi.

Must be mostly remains in Dimapur, achieved a 2-1 odds and reduced the forts already in the first assault. Hopefully we can capture it and start driving the enemy
back into Burma tomorrow.

Java

David tells me that his surface ships have all but run out of fuel. The map edge should therefore not hold any blame for the carnage that unfolds in the Indian Ocean these days. I must say that Wobbly's choice would have caused me more grief - then I would have had to reduce the CAP over Tjilitjap in order to get to the ships. For a handful of torpedo bombers we have now heavily damaged or sunk the bulk of the UK and US Eastern and Pacific Fleets.

I'm still spotting a group of 8 ca's? heading southwest, Car Div 2 will make a high speed dash and try to intercept it. Car Divs 1 and 3 will finish the remaining ships. In 3-4 days I hope to be heading back to base. I'm considering a move up to Bombay with Car Div 1 in order to finish the British remnant fleet there.
