Situation Report

Fortunately no sign of the imperialist carriers today! Would have caught me at an awkward moment. The 2 carrier divisions are only a few hexes apart and will be joined tommorrow. I will take up a protective position not too far from the convoy that's moving slowly west. Hopefully the worst crisis will soon be put behind us, and then we can concentrate on punishing instead of getting punished again [:)]

Wobbly also wanted to bombard me and sent in a small tf that hit Victoria Point. Risky, since I got a lot of eyes and long range bombers in the area.
Stepping up recon work over Burma. Seems like there are only 16k troops at Rangoon now - there are smaller units scattered all over the place.

The force that will move into Burma is composed of the 15th Army under L.Gen Yamamoto.

He got the 5th and 18th Divisions
The 15th and 16th Naval Guard Units
23rd AA Regiment
1st Engineer Regiment
17th Heavy Field Arty Regiment
5 Special Base Force units
6th Reserve Tank Regiment
2 Para Regiments

A total of 75000 men.

At Rahaeng there are 27 fighters, 20 recon ac and 72 transports. Another 12 transports will move in in a few days.
At Tavoy there are 39 fighters, 86 bombers and 8 recon ac
At Moulemin there are 26 fighters and 26 bombers
Bangkok then got an additional 39 fighters, 130 bombers and 12 recon ac.

At total of 134 Zeros, 242 bombers, 72(+12) transports and 40 recon ac

At PM the torpedo bombers is a pain, but I now got a sizeable base force in place. 50 Zeros have also been moved in and will claim more victims if the raiders comes back for more tomorrow.

Lots of air activity in China. 36 Lilys moved in today to join the bombardment of Sian.

Situation Report

No sign of the imperialist carriers in the South Pacific! I'm moving the now reduced KB and the troop convoys WNW.
The carriers will provide far cover for another week until I feel secure closer to Rabaul. One part of the convoy will unload at Lunga while the other part moves back to Rabaul.

It will take approximately 3 weeks for the KB to finish their escort role and move back to Singapore. There they will rest for one week before Operation Hangover starts on April 1st. 1942.

Burma

The 15th Army has started its move towards Rangoon! I wish to make this my forward base. My Zeros can provide LRCAP from here while the naval bombers keeps the Allied fleets in check. I will not deploy my paras until they're really needed. There are a lot of smaller base forces in the bases between Mandalay and Rangoon. Akyab is a potential target though, as this would provide me with a size 3 af very close to India proper.

Sigint reported radio transmissions from a hex just next to Lashio!? (36,30) I interprete this like Wobbly is moving Chinese troops into Burma. This isn't good, so I better hurry.

China

In China I'm forced to spend time and resources on kicking our always vigorous Kiwi General out [8|]
I will not wear out my troops by ordering them to attack a strong enemy that has a lot of forts. So I'll bombard from both the ground and air. More Lilys and Oscar 'I' fighters will be moved in from Japan and the DEI to support these operations. I really don't have better use for them elsewhere anyway. Their limited range and firepower makes them useless against the Allies.

My plan is to move in reinforcements and try to encircle Sian - and first then will I try to capture it. Then all the defenders will surrender as soon as I achieve a 2-1 odds. I've learned my lesson...never surround a chink on open ground!-)

Phase 1 and Phase 2

When Batavia falls - tomorrow I hope - Phase 1 will be concluded and Phase 2 will start.
There are still 10 Dutch bases and there are probably some defenders on Timor, but I doubt it will be difficult to occupy them. My naval bombers got the entire north coast of Australia covered.

I'm very satisfied with how quickly Phase one has been brought to a successfull conclusion - February is still not over, and I can now use all of March to prepare for the next round and still be able to launch the next wave much earlier than my most optimistic estimates.

It's very unfortunate that the Hiryu and Soryu were lost! This was my operational reserve that I had planned to base at Rabaul/Truk. I don't have the resources to invade PM now, but I will build up the Solomons, Kwajalein, Tarawa and the Marianas. This will be my southern perimeter, and me thinks Wobbly will feel a belonging to this area because of his earlier exploits in Uncommon Valor. So I will try to make him 'walk the line' from Lunga and all the way up the coast of New Guinea. That should buy me time if I'm not able to win an autovictory by 1943.

Naval bombers and Zeros will be based at Kwajalein, Saipan, Rabaul and on the Home Islands. If Wobbly gets audacious when the KB is away, I hope he'll get a nasty surprise.

It seems like both Japanese and Allied sub doctrine got turned on when we upgraded with the last patch. This sux, especially for Wobbly as his most important targets are my supply convoys. It could also explain why I've been loosing so many boats: they're seeking out Allied warships, not transports. I will rest them and try to employ them en masse when the enemy decides to move against me in strength. Then there will be lots of damaged stragglers and high value targets around that will make their sacrifice worthwhile.

forces in the area. All in all 130 SBD's have been destroyed in the ground here, a true graveyard! If I also got the brunt
of their pilots, I'll be extremely pleased.

Situation Report

The quietest day in a long time....
A sub that got torpedoed after attacking a Brit cruiser in the Indian Ocean finally sank not far of the west coast of Malaya. It had made it a long way with 88 flood and 46 sys damage. Too bad it couldn't hang in just a few more days.

I'm moving AA, engineer and arty units from the Kwantung Army towards Sian. More Lilys and Oscar I's are also enroute. I will try to give Mr.W a surprise!

In the South Pacific the danger seems to be over and Wobbly doesn't know what a great chance he had to damage or sink my 4 remaining fleet carriers. That would have ment
the end of Operation Hangover and made further offensive operations all but impossible.

Construction units and base forces are heading towards Hollandia, Shortland and other bases in the south.

I'm slowly getting more info about the Allied troop disposition around Rangoon. It seems like the bulk of the Allied combat troops have camped in the hex just north of Rangoon.
(See map below.) Tomorrow I will knock out a small picket unit just east of Rangoon before continuing on to engage the main Allied force. Heavy air strikes have also been ordered. I'm considering to drop the 2 para regiments in blocking positions to cut the Allied units off from Burma/India. This will effectively cut supplies and give me a chance to hoard a lot of troops into Rangoon proper. If I need more troops, an additional division will be moved in from Singapore.

I'm going to leave 2 regiments at Java, 1 on Sumatra and 1 brigade on Borneo. Smaller units will garrison the smaller but still important bases.
The 2 divisions at Java will be moved to the South Pacific - I need a strong force down there as a strong strategic reserve.
A division in the Home Islands will be changed to Southern Area control and shipped to the Phillippines. This garrison together with AA, base forces and construction units is all I can afford for now. (I feel that it's necessary to keep a rather strong garrison in important areas as it would be completely unrealistic to strip them completely.)

WhoCares -> RE: A quiet day.... (10/14/2004 10:49:17 AM)

Those places might look like good places to drop paras, but you just can drop paras in base hexes, as far as I know...

PzB74 -> Rangoon is the next objective! (10/14/2004 2:11:36 PM)

Of course, you're right WhoCares....had forgotten it. Have dropped paras in UV before, and they certainly have to be dropped on base hexes. I just used logic and didn't think in game terms [:'(]

Today I moved in an Emily Daitai to Lunga - should provide extended naval search capabilities. Lost 1 ac in the process!

Wobbly moved the blocking unit back to the hex north of Rangoon. I'm in pursuit! Air strikes hit an Indian and Australian Bde today.
Will be a tough match! As WhoCares mentioned, it isn't possible to drop paras on non-base hexes. I will now consider to drop both my para regiments
at Pagan and then march one south to block the retreat path from Rangoon. 2 SNLF and a heavy AA units are on their way to Akyab by fast transport.
This is my alternative solution to trap the army north of Rangoon.

I told Wobbly that he could read the first page of my AAR today and was told that I also could read his in return! [:)]
Will be interesting to compare our points of view.

Situation Report

Got a migraine last night, but got good enough to play the turn...well, that was my initial feeling - not sure how well I'll feel when the results comes in [;)] Since the Australian Bde is moving inland towards Pagan I ordered my 80 transports to committ the 2 para regiments. Recon showed 23 enemy fighters based there, so 2 sweeps and a long LRCAP has been ordered together with airstrikes. The plan is to try to catch as many enemy troops as possible in northern Burma.

The 2 para regiments will be difficult to defeat, and I can fly in reinforcements as I've been nurturing my transport fleet carefully and got 100's of them.

Tomorrow the army will move into the hex north of Rangoon - will be interesting to see whether Wobbly will retreat all his units south. That may quickly turn into long walk [8D]

I'm also preparing to encircle Sian - a crack division will guard the road leading into Sian from the west while a crack bde will march the northern approaches. Regiments and cavalry divs will make up the rest of the encirclement.
More divisions, engineers and arty will in the meantime arrive at Sian. Airstrikes will intensify and deliberate attacks commence tomorrow.

If it becomes obvious that my plan can't succeed, I will retreat all my forces south and commit somewhere else.
I don't wish a chinese Stalingrad!

In the south Pacific a troop convoy is unloading at Lunga while another one arrived at Kwajalein. (Clearing a lot of mines actually - thank you Mr. W [:'(] I hope I've made enough noise in the south to convince Wobbly that my next phase will take place here. I don't know whether he'll move his carriers south from the Indian Ocean either - I actually hope he doesn't...me wants them! (When I asked him whether he did get any of the SBD's out of Batavia, I didn't get a reply. So I don't know whether they got a full ac complement anymore - but I will assume so in lack of more accurate data.)

As always one has to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best!

I assume that at least another 50 Allied transports have been lost.

I've been looking at the map over India and is planning to expand the objectives to include the elimination of the British from the game.
This would mean that I have to occupy Karachi, but this is not an impossibility. It will require that I concentrate the bulk of my Army here for most of 1942.
After invading Dacca and Calcutta - Burma will be completely cut of from their supplies. A blocking force will then be inserted at Dimapur. The army that's advancing from Rangoon will then threaten the enemy from the south.

Further amphibious landings will then take place at Colombo, Madras and further north along the Indian west coast. At the same time, powerful forces will advance along the rail line. If successful, it could be possible to win an autovictory. If not, the British will be out of the game and the Indian Ocean turned into 'Mare Nostrum'. In addition, China will lay open to conquest while forces could be redployed to meet the US offensives in the South Pacific that will commence sometime in 43.

The loss of 2 fleet carriers makes it just so much more difficult to expand south towards New Caledonia, Fiji and New Zealand.
A few Zero commanders with too much sake and the entire operation would slip beneath the waves... [;)]

Andy Mac -> RE: Status Report Pr 01/03-1942 (10/15/2004 11:23:43 PM)

Its risky.

If he realises what you are up to he will send a convoy of 6th 7th and 3rd Australian or a couple of US Divs to help out the Commonwealth.

To stop them probably escorted by US CV's will require a fine split of forces you will need to loiter in strength off of Sri Lanka to intercept that convoy while at the same time providing aircover for your west coast landings against the whole RAF and IAF plus probably the Chinese and any other Sqns he can summon.

Also need to watch for heavies going accross China to Burma to India.

4 or 5 gps of fortresses/ liberators could make a real mess of your landings.

I think its a hell of a risk especially minus 2 CV's.

You will be fighting a war out of range of LBA but in range of his.

The commonwealth is weak in India but assuming he can deploy 7th 255th and 254th Ard plus 2nd 18th UK and 5th Indian plus various recuperating Bdes and newly arriving Bgde sized formations and a few weak divisions to me its a tall order.

If he has neglected his fortification building you might do it.

In reality if you are going to do it i am not convinced that 3 or 4 Divisions plus support going directly over the shore at Karachi with no prepatory landing may be best (although a tad gamey as Indian formations should actually arrive straight from training camps at various Indian cities and not at Karachi)

Good luck

PzB74 -> 1st. Para Regiment captures Pagan! (10/16/2004 8:04:29 PM)

Thx for the feedback Andy Mac! I agree with you, it's a risky business - but nevertheless I'm going to do it. The higher the stake, the higher the odds!
The 2 cv's that I lost were intended for operations in the South Pacific, but it was still a hard blow. It will be like playing with 10 players in a soccer match instead of 11.
It takes an extra effort from those who remains to make up for the loss of a teamplayer.

I will do my best to 'scrounge' more troops for the operation!

When Wobbly knows what I'm up to, he will move reinforcements from Karachi - so I'm considering to send 4 divisions that will attempt to capture this place about a month after the first landings around Dacca/Calcutta. Allied heavy bombers will be too few in numbers to hurt really hurt me and the KB and the entire Combined Fleet will do their outmost to keep Allied reinforcements from Oz out. A string of picket ships will form an alarm line that will 'ring' if Allied cv's tries to move in.

Situation Report

A very interesting - and gratifying day! 49 allied ac destroyed for the cost of 3 Japanese [:)]

The para drop at Pagan succeeds above my expectations. The LRCAP brought down several Hurries that were trying to get to the transports. (I didn't see this, but my Zero pilots
were awarded kills as the transports went in.) I was unsure about how many men my transport could bring in only one day - about 2/3 of a full para regiment was the answer. This was more than adequate to kick out the base force and destroy 33 Warhawks and 14 Hurries on the ground! Excellent [:)] The Warhawks are probably part of the AVG!

Tomorrow the remainder of the 1st Para Regiment will be brought in together with supplies and a Special Base force. 14 Zeros have already been moved in to provide local CAP.
In 2 days I will land another base force and perhaps also land the 2nd Para Regiment. Depends on what Wobbly brings in against me. I got a SNLF unit enroute from Singapore to Bangkok that are para capable as well as a larger SNLF unit. Will try to reinforce the garrison at Pagan while also marching a unit sout to cut of the rail line leading east from Rangoon.

It seems like Wobbly has put his main force in the hex north of Rangoon, they did not retreat and today 62000 men of the 15th Army arrived and will launch deliberate attacks tomorrow. If the battle becomes prolonged, I will send in a division from Singapore directly to Rangoon. There are only 6000 Allied troops there (says my intel).

The fas transport unit is already on its way to Akyab and a smaller construction unit landed at the Andaman island today. I don't think there are any enemy troops there. Bombed it and nothing was achieved. Probably just a few marooned ac that shows up on my map.

The old cvl Hosho with only 11 ac aboard is moving towards Truk with 1 ca and 2 dds. It will drive around the Coral Sea and 'show the flag' to old Al [;)]

In China I'm getting better results from my bombardment attacks at Sian and in a few days the base will be surrounded - I hope. By then another 3 crack divisions will have reached the enemy base and I will try to capture it and destroy the 110k enemy troops stationed there. 36 Oscar I's were moved to Shanhai today and will reinforce my Nates and dwindling numbers of Tojos in a few days. (Lost 2 Tojos today, 1 to op losses and 1 to air combat.)

I got a very interesting book (for you Axis Fanboys that is;) called 'Rising Sun Victorious'. It's an alternate history of how the Japanese won the Pacific War. Chapter 7 is called the Japanese Raj [;)]

Take a look at the map over the operation that brough India and Burma under the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere in 1942! The timeline is almost exactly the same as in my and Wobblys game. In the end Japan lost India, but defeated China and managed to negotiate a peace treaty with the US by handing back the Phillippines.

Situation Report

The 15th Army hit a solid wall north of Rangoon - but I've foreseen it [:'(] Plan B is already in motion - a full division + eng. and aviation regiments are already sailing north towards Rangoon. The light carriers are providing air cover.
Will simply unload the whole lot directly at Rangoon as there's a mere 6000 troops defending it. That will force Wobbly to move either south and be trapped - or retreat north.

I really don't want to get stalled at Rangoon, so I'm going to use what's necessary to force the enemy to retreat.

At Pagan I've now lifted in the remainder of the 1st Paras and a special base force. More supplies and another base force will land tomorrow. I'll hold the 2nd Paras in reserve - Wobbly thinks it was a hit and run raid. I'm unsure about how heavy forces he can bring to bear.

Tomorrow the KB enters Truk and sets out for Singapore.

At Sian I'm getting in position, still got 2 more divisions on their way and tomorrow most of the encirclement should be in place. There are 2 Chinese units west of Sian, so the question will be whether a crack IJA div can move these away. Wobbly will probably think it will be easy to break the encirclement again, but I've learned and sent in more reliable troops to hold the perimeter this time. 36 Oscar I moved into China today and will provide air cover over Sian. The remaining 6 Tojos are moved south into reserve.

The Mutsu that got hit by a torpedo some time ago is almost ready to sail for Singapore - 9 sys damage now.

Situation Report

I had hoped that the paras would prove to be resilient in defense..but they were easily kicked out of Pagan. The good thing is that they retreated south towards Moulemin. Tomorrow a ft will land 3500 men at Akyab.

I'm having problems with my scheme in China: Units marching towards Sian have marched 78/60 miles while units that have been ordered to move east, west and north of the base simply halted at Sian. In other words, it's impossible to give accurate orders to my divisions. Too bad.... I've now got more than 200k troops in place and will attack the base until all the forts have been reduced. Then I will keep up the attacks for another week or so, but if I'm getting nowhere near a 2-1 odds, I will retreat my men back south.

madflava13 -> RE: 15th Army meets heavy resistance north of Rangoon! (10/17/2004 6:43:05 PM)

I would recommend against attacking Karachi head on from the sea. IIRC, there's a pretty powerful CD unit there, isn't there? I think you'd be better served taking Chandpur/DH/Dacca and the like, then building a strong defensive front. You'll still cut off China and control the majority of India. Wobbly will have his timelines shattered and will then have to shift forces -CVs and land units- to the theater to counter the move. You'll still achieve the strategic effect you desire without the attendant risk of such a long journey to Karachi. Any ships that get damaged will likely be lost in such a venture, IMHO.

Just my two cents... Battle on!

PzB74 -> RE: 15th Army meets heavy resistance north of Rangoon! (10/17/2004 8:15:49 PM)

All to true Madflava!

The Karachi operation will be dependent on several factors:

1. How successful will phase 1 be?
2. Will Wobbly send in the US cvs?
3. Will the KB still be able to protect the invasion force?

I'm not that afraid of invading Karachi since I would use my bb's to soften the place up first.
Landing further south of Karachi is also an option.

I certainly don't want to waste a potential beneficial situation by throwing away the cream of my fighting elite in a desperate operation, but an autovictory is probably the only chance I got to force an end to the war - so I will be willing to gamble.

Firstly I got to secure Rangoon....!

Andy Mac -> RE: 15th Army meets heavy resistance north of Rangoon! (10/17/2004 8:42:41 PM)

I am more concerned that your plan may underestimate the allied land forces.

He has three very powerful armoured spearheads at his diposal plus 4 - 6 Divisional equivalents of Inf 3 of which are experienced formations (2nd and 18th UK plus 5th Indian (when it arrives)) and depending on his force committment at Rangoon and Burma thats a minimum strength !!!

He will also have remnants of other forces he is rebuilding from Singapore and DEI. ( I hasten to add I dont know what he has recovered as I have not read Wobblies side prior to writing this)

If he has formed nodal response forces on the rail net he could stop you cold on the beaches.

If this offensive stalls in any way he will have time to respond and concentrate againt your landings

If your forces are prepping for this assault then he may get warning through sig int if not your forces will land heavily disrupted.

Behind fortifications 1 Brigade equivalent could really stop you taking the coastal city in one day.

If I was defending against an Indian Invasion I would have trip wire sized forces in each of the coastal cities each one with an Base Force designed to hold unsupported for no more than 3 days. (I am paranoid about India in all my games and tend to actually take the threat seriously and fortify madly)

Backing that up inland I would have 3 nodal reaction forces consisting of an Armoured Bde and an experienced strong Inf formation.

One in East supporting Diamond Harbour and Calcutta.

One in Centre supporting Madras to Bombay

and one in North covering Karachi to Bombay.

If I was feeling really confident I would move my Northern force south to assist my central reserve.

Backing those core reaction forces would be 3 Indian Corps in centre with additonal Art/ Eng and Inf (as they have regained strength following earlier battles)and other forces spread evenly throughout India.

Behind high forts against a highly disrupted enemy you will need overwhelming force to secure a beach head.

I guess the only city that is really vulnerable from my point of view is the south coast one off the rail net as it would take longer for reaction forces to arrive.

I look forward to seeing how the plan works out !!!!

p.s.

(I hasten to add no opponent has as yet tried this against me so the above could be complete bullshit and India could fall like a rotten apple !!!!!)

Andy Mac -> RE: 15th Army meets heavy resistance north of Rangoon! (10/17/2004 9:08:29 PM)

Another thing to consider based on my own playstyle I always even if only via sub transport rescue cadres of a few units from Malaya/ Java Phillipines and I tend to send Malayan evacuess to India to rebuild plus sometimes others from Phillipines/ DEI/.

If wobbly has done the same.

His replacements are sufficient to rebuild the USMC Rgt from Phillipines and one of the Aus Bdes and perhaps even a CW bgde from Malaya plus all the engineering units and base forces.

Add these to a command HQ like ABDA/ Malaya AG or USAFFE which can also be evaced and you potentially face another 1 - 2 Divisional equivalents there (Ok they will be green as hell but they can still sit behind forts)

On the other hand having looked at the map again he has a lot of coast to cover and actually if he has overcommitted to Burma (as I did against Sveint in our game) he could be vulnerable.

The more I look at it the more interesting it appears it is a large risk that to me seems to depend entirely on how well your deception plan works and how well Wobbly has deployed.

It is not a slam dunk either way

Come on guys I want to see how it goes hurry up get those turns moving !!!!

[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

PzB74 -> SNLF at Akyab! (10/18/2004 1:20:18 PM)

Thx for the update on Allied capabilities in India Andy Mac! I'm quite certain that Wobbly will put up a organized and spirited defense of India. My hope is that his forces will be scattered all over the continent so I can defeat them piecemeal!
There are over 50000 troops in Burma, and I think he may have invested a little too heavily in this area.

I'm unsure about how many troops he managed to evacuate from Malaya and the DEI, but they may have gone to Oz and not India - and they should not have been rebuilt yet anyway.

Some of my shock divisions are preparing for landings at Diamond Harbor - so I hope his intel doesn't pick this up.

In 1 month we should know - and I guess this will take between 2 and 3 weeks of play to get there, so hang in [;)]

The landings at Akyab were successful and only minimal casualties were suffered. The Hasu had to be scuttled, but otherwise the troops are ashore and will attack tomorrow. I don't expect to find more than a base force here!
A size 3 af behind Wobblys lines will annoy him [8D]

Told Wobbly that I had an invasion convoy enroute to Canton Isl and that he almost got to it. This is the only way to let him know about my planned 'diversion' in the South Pacific [:'(]

At Sian todays attack was bloody, but successful! I didn't loose much more troops than the Chinese, and the forts came down one level. This is good because I got a lot more men than Wobbly does, and with the same rate of attrition - I will eventually win. It's also difficult to attack places with high levels of fortifications. Have to rest my troops a day or two as disruption sky rocketed. Another attack would have been 3 times bloodier than the one today....

Bombardment and invasions groups are now 4-5 days away from Rangoon!

Situation Report

Problems in Burma was my first reaction when I looked at todays turn.
The shock attack at Akyab failed - I think Wobbly either flew or fast transported in reinforcements and
prevented the base from falling. Hopefully I'll be allowed to retreat, but I'm not optimistic. The strategic implications
are small though, as it has turned out to be difficult to cut the Allied troops north of Rangoon off.

A few days ago I tried to march one of the large naval garrisons SE to the hex between Rangoon and Moulmein, but it simply stopped moving. (I've talked about how difficult it is to move troops in WitP before.)
So now Wobbly managed to move the Indian bde that clashed with my tank regiment just north of Rahaeng west and is now blocking the path for the 15th Army. I was not allowed to move 15th Army units east, but I was allowed to march towards Rahaeng. So I ordered one division to move to reopen the line of supplies. I'm not convinced that it really will move, but I'm told it's heading SE.

In addition a Chinese!! corps attacked the retreating 1st Para and base units. I had my suspicions, and now I know - the Chinese are involved in Burma!

I found out that I made a mistake by not leaving a sizeable reserve unit at Moulmein, so I can't send in reinforcements as quickly as I wanted. The 2nd Para Regiment will move in by air though.

The troop convoy is only a few days out of Rangoon, and should break the deadlock though. The escorts attacked an Allied sub twice today, so Wobbly may be alerted. I only consider the 2 US cv's as a potential threat, and I got a lot of Nells and Betties in the area together with the light carriers.

I ordered an additional fast transport group to move half a regiment towards Moulmein and also created a second troop convoy with 1500 size aps that loaded the Imperial Guards Division in a single day. 15 escort vessels will protect it as it speeds north towards Rangoon.

Hopefully things will improve over the next few days. At least I know that Wobbly is investing heavily in the defense of Burma. Perhaps that will count to my advantage when Hangover starts. (I will start the operation even if I haven't captured Rangoon by early April.)

In China I've ordered my troops to attack Sian again - more losses, but less forts is tomorrows forecast.

Situation Report

My LRCAP over Akyab intercepted and shot down 2 troop carrying Catalinas today.
I'm not going to capture the base with the forces that have been landed. A para landing would more likely have been
more successful.

95% of the 2nd Para and parts of the Kure SNLF is now in Moulmein, and are moving towards the indian bde that kicked out my HQ unit east of Rangoon together with the tank regiment and the 2 large naval garrisons north of Rangoon. Should arrive tomorrow.

Unfortunate that my dozen+ escorts attacked the Allied sub - if there are US carriers in the area, things can become nasty.
Only a few days out of Rangoon now. I'm going to land them there while fast transports land reinforcments at Moulmein.

Wobbly told me that he wanted to make me commit to Burma - no problemo since that's my plan. He's probably suspecting a move towards India now - but can he do a lot about it?

I'm not really worried, it looks a litte messy - but it's still me that's wielding the biggest hammer! [8D]

Over to China:

It seems like I'm succeeding at Sian, but the high level of disruption among my troops is a concern. Only 2 levels of forts left, and the Chinese are loosing almost twice as many men as I do. Since I almost got twice as many troops there now, I will continue with the attacks. My enemies must also be worn by now! As soon as the last fort is gone, a shock attack will be delivered. Still got some reinforcements on the way.

On New Guinea I've built Lae to a size 2 airfield and now both my Zero Daitais are operating at full capacity. Today they showed that they own the airspace over PM. Wobbly put Warhawks on CAP to protect a transport that arrived with supplies. My naval bombers did not launch any strikes.

Situation Report

Weather has been really poor around Rangoon over the last few days, and Wobbly manages to sneak up with a large bombardment tf consisting of almost 20 ships. They bombard Moulmein and destroys 49 ac on the ground, of which the majority were transport ac. I got my bombers at Tavoy.... Only luck prevented the bombardment group from running into my 25 (24 now) ships strong fast transport that is unloading at Moulmein at this very moment.

The 33000 men bound for Rangoon is now in the hex between Rangoon and Moulmein - so even though Wobbly got in a very good shot, I'm happy that my transports got away. Tomorrow a heavy bombardment group will hit Rangoon and close the airfields while a full division + an engineer regiment unloads. (I've learned and removed the dd's from the bombardment group.)

The light carriers have not yet been spotted, and were shrouded in rain clouds during both of todays air phases. The retreating Allied ships were only 5 hexes NE of the carriers, and were lucky. I will not race after them, I'm more afraid that 2 US cv's will pop out of nowhere. So the carriers with 1 cs and 2 battleships for support moves a few hexes west to better provide cover for the landings.

More Nells have moved north to Bangkok and put on naval attack while a small base force is being airlifted to Andaman Isl. Dinah and Mavis groups have already moved out to provide me with better recon abilities. I've really not been able to spot much at all thus far in this game - and the contrast to UV is significant. There it's all but impossible to move anywhere without being sighted.

The 15th Army units that yesterday had moved 59 miles towards Rahaeng have now cancelled their movement and remains in the hex north of Rangoon. They will wait until Rangoon falls and the path to Moulmein has been reopened before they turn active again.

The Imperial Guards division has left Singapore and is sailing north under heavy escort.

In China todays attack was very costly, but there's only 1 fort level left - so I've ordered yet another attack. 1 division, 1 bde and 1 cavalry division + 1 engineer regiment will move into Sian shortly. When the forts are gone I'm unsure whether to attack or rest before trying a knock out blow - advice, anyone?

The KB is moving towards the Phillippines - I will not move them far into the Indian Ocean until Operation Hangover starts, but I will keep them ready to intercept possible US carriers. (I hope they get there quickly enough!)

Tomorrow will be an exciting day!

Situation Report

Today was certainly a much better day than the last 2-3 ones.
Rangoon was hit heavily and an entire division landed. Tomorrow we will attack!

My tank regiment chased the indian bde off the road east of Rangoon, and I'm now going to move in a bde of my own to reinforce my position.

A fast transport group is ordered to Akyab to pick up an SNLF unit. 3 fast msw will escort the group. The place will receive more attention when Hangover commences.

My intel tells about ~10000 Allied troops at Rangoon, and I'm uncertain whether these are all support or combat formations. Tomorrow we'll know! I expect there to be heavy fortifications, so it could take some time to capture it.

In China the forts are gone and I will continue to attack - still 2 more divisions on their way. Wobbly is also reinforcing the place, so I will not give him any breaks.

Situation Report

Things are proceeding according to plans! The falls of Rangoon was expected - but nevertheless welcome news.
The 15th Army will be reinforced with the division that has been landed and try to force the enemy army north of Rangoon to retreat and thereby open the railroad south to Malaya. This may be a long and ardous task, but I'd like to bind up the Allied troops here - that will make Operation Hangover easier.

I'm sending more troops to Akyab! The fast transport tf that unloaded the bulk of a bde at Moulmein will move north with 3 msw's. Paras will also be deployed to make sure the place falls. I want a forward base for my Zeros!

The Imperial Guards Div is turned south again and will return to Singapore. The 2 divisions at Java are also being moved to Singapore. I now got 2600 polit points, and I'm planning to release an experienced division from China. That will cost me 3300 polit points.

Still got 3 weeks to prepare for Operation Hangover - just what I need to get everything sorted out. Massive amounts of tankers are currently moving oil from Palembang and other oilfields back to Japan.

The KB has reached Mindanao and is only a short week from Singapore while the Hosho has reached the Marianas and will soon enter Truk. I will try to show the flag in the South Pacific...

In China I got a 1-1 odds - and that's good news! Chinese losses remains high, and I will continue the attacks for another few days as the last reserves are committed. If the base doesn't fall, I will order a shock attack. If the Chinese retreats west, there will only be 50000 troops holding the bases north of Sian. This would be a very tempting target.....

The Zuiho is repairing nicely at Singapore, down to 38 sys damage now. Should be ready for action in a couple of months or so.

Situation Report

Been changing some factory settings and prepared more oil and resource convoys today. I've reduced the number of Oscar I, Tabby and Dinahs being produced and
increased production as increased factory size for models like the Emily, Sally and Betties.

Truk, Rabaul and Kwajalein now holds sizeable garrisons and bomber groups. Construction and garrison units are being moved to Tarawa while the expansion of both
Lunga, Shortland, Lae, Hollandia and Wewak is well under way. More garrisons and base force units embarked in Tokyo and is heading for Kendari. It will be difficult to reinforce these areas when I get committed to Operation Hangover - and I want to leave a perimeter defense and work hard on expanding it.

Wobbly tells me that he will not retreat his army north of Rangoon [8D] Thank you Mr. W! I will retreat the 15th Army into Rangoon and expand it with the 38th Division. Then supplies and coastal defensive units will be moved into not only Rangoon, but also Moulmein and Tavoy. While my men rests, mosquitos and bugs will inflict heavy casualties on the allied troops rotting on the railroad outside Rangoon - which is a temperate non malaria zone! When the **** hits the fan in India, my rested troops will spring into action and pursue the allied units werever they may go. Engineers have fixed the runways in Rangoon, but the port and air service facilities are still in shambles. Since weather is bad, air units will not move in until the base has been cleaned up and the weather cleared.

The fast transport loading a bde at Moulmein left without having loaded a single man[:'(] I split the force into 3 and has ordered pick up of all the 3 stranded units at Akyab. I will come back with a more coordinated and better prepared force before Hangover starts. 3 msw's will clear mines before the transports moves in.

In China I'm getting better combat results for each day and I will wait another few days before launching a shock attack. Tomorrow the last reinforcements will join the battle.

Situation Report

Fast transports managed to evacuate most of the men at Akyab! Only a few 105mm AA guns were left behind.

In China Sian finally fell and I now control the entire railroad *applause*
The chinese army retreated north! This means that I now got 2 options: I can pursue and try to capture northern China. I know that around 40000 troops are defending the base north of Sian. The retreating troops is a spent force - so the question is: Should I march 150000 men north in an attempt to destroy them completely?

Advice anyone?

If I march north, I have to leave the railroad and leave China without a mobile reserve. This is such an disadvantage that I'm seriously considering the second alternative: to go onto the defensive and be satisfied with the current state of affairs.
This would make it possible to withdraw forces out of China to reinforce operations in the Pacific.

Base forces are being shipped out to the outermost bases on Malaya and New Guinea to provide bases for search planes.
I also have to use some warships to protect an invasion of Timor. Will wait until Wobbly got other things on his mind, as this will lessen the chance of meeting enemy warships in the area.

kaiser73 -> RE: Sian falls! (10/22/2004 12:50:30 AM)

my advice, pursue the enemies. when units get beaten, they are distrupted. but if you let them recover, they will get back in shape.

Now it seems easier to go on defensive, but once you kill those units or force them in jungle without supplies, you will have freed up much more units.

sveint -> RE: Sian falls! (10/22/2004 2:46:21 AM)

I would.

But it might be just as good or better to go on the defensive and send troops to Burma or the Pacific.

Let us know... really enjoy this AAR. Must be hard to gain the level of trust necessary.

sveint -> RE: Sian falls! (10/22/2004 2:48:17 AM)

Oh and if you do pursue: Leave a small garrison in Sian and send all your consturction units there to get fort levels up fast. That should be enough to hold, it's on the rail and easy to reinforce.

2ndACR -> RE: Sian falls! (10/22/2004 4:20:01 AM)

I would beware under estimating defenses in India. I invaded Chandpur against Ron when I spotted and reconned 90,000 troops in Mouleim. Those will mainly be Chinese troops. He had one of the Brit divisions and some real good units in Dacca. I got the Imperial Guard and the 18th Divisions butchered over the 3 week battle for Dacca. I saved over half of them though.

I must have missed something. Why do you need to release a division from China? I have roughly 8 divisions free to use after Malaya and the PI are secure and many more brigades and regiments. And these units are all in the 80-90 experience range and full strength.

Freeboy, after he assumed our game, started dropping paras based in Chandpur all over the place behind my lines in Burma and India as far as his transports could reach. Got butchered when they landed on bases I'm sure he thought I had left undefended, but the silly invincibility rule for Japan has the wee groups of 80 Japs shock attacking and bouncing off the defenders (3000-4000 men in many cases). Now they are running around India like brats in a shopping centre. Then he hit Ceylon with the biggest assault I've seen in awhile. Trincomalee fell after about two weeks of unending naval and air pummeling. He has paid dearly due to the 9.2" nuclear howitzers, the LCU wonder artillery, a few mine strikes and LBA though. He is causing me some serious grief in India. But......my supply of Javanese coffee beans gets more secure with each day he attempts to get around the high price of Kobe beef by grabbing at the bony excuses for cattle roaming blissfully about in India.

PzB74 -> RE: Sian falls! (10/22/2004 12:05:10 PM)

Thx for the advice and input everyone, appreciate it!

Sveint, it wasn't difficult to trust Al - I've played some UV games with him and I immediately put him on my 'trust' list! Not sure how he decided that he could trust a pragmatic weasel like me though! [;)]

I'm aware of that India could be a hard nut, but I've decided to give it a try. You may ask why I want to get troops from China...and the answer is simply that I don't want to underestimate the potential trouble I may run into. If I have to butcher several of my divisions, it would be sad to know that I could have pulled it off if I only had one more division available.

The 50000 Allied troops that are blocking the road north of Rangoon are all Allied troops - and good ones. They've been giving my crack 15th Army a bloody nose on several occasions.

My plan is simply to land with so many troops that I can overrun the Allied defenses in Dacca and Calcutta. You can rest assured of one thing, when I do something - I prefer to do it properly! [sm=00000106.gif]

I'm also thinking that Operation Hangover will turn into a honey pot and that Wobbly is going to send in all his carriers and reinforcements to India and the Indian Ocean when the going gets tough. Then it would be nice to have 40000 men ready at Rabaul to invade Port Moresby with.

All these plans are more important than marching north and eliminating another 3 chinese bases - and that's the main reason why I'm not sure I want to commit to major operations in yet another theater. I will have to think about it.
My men at Sian are fatigued and there are a lot of damaged squads. I really need a weeks rest before moving anywhere.
I doubt that the routed chinese will move north that fast either [8D]
