With all the discussion about ASW I tried a little controlled test using scenario 4 (South Pacific 42). Head to head, fow off , japanese sub doctrine off and allied sub doctrine off. ASW taskforce of 4 japanese destroyers (77/71, 77/74, 83/84, 84/88) with a ASW rating of 2 (Type 95) vs. US Gato class sub. Round 1 Day 1: - Day 2: Day ASW attack; 2 DDs fire; no hits Day 2: Day Sub attack torpedoes miss; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 3: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 4: - Day 5: Night ASW attack; 2 DDs fire; no hits Day 5: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 5: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 6: - Day 7: - Day 8: Day ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 9: - (refuelling) tie Round 2 Day 1: - Day 2: - Day 3: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 4: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 5: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; 3 hits (sub damage 35/53/0) Round 3 Day 1: Night ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 1: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 1: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 2: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 3: - Day 4: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 5: Day Sub attack; 1 torpedo hit; DD sunk; 1 DD fire; no hits Round 4 Day 1: - Day 2: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 3: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; 1 hit (sub damage 18/25/0) Round 5 Day 1 to 5: - Day 6: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 7: - Day 8: Night ASW attack; 3 DDs fire; 6 hits; sub sinks Round 6 Day 1 to 4: - Day 5: Night sub attack; torpedo miss; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 6: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 7: Night ASW attack: 2 DDs fire; 5 hits; sub sinks Round 7 Day 1: Night ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 1: Day ASW attack; 3 DDs fire; no hits Day 1: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 2: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 3 to 5: - Day 6: Night ASW attack; sub diving deep; 2 DDs fire; no hits Day 7: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 7: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 8: - Day 9: Night ASW attack; 2 DDs fire; no hits; (refuelling) tie Round 8 Day 1: Day ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 2: Night ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 2: Day ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 2: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; No DDs fire Day 3: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; 1 hit (sub damage 17/20/0) Round 9 Day 1: Day sub attack; torpedo fail; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 2: Night ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 3: - Day 4: Day sub attack; torpedo fail; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 5: - Day 6: - Day 7: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 7: Day ASW attack; 1 DD fire; 1 hit (sub damage 26/42/0) Round 10 Day 1: Day sub attack; torpedo miss; sub diving deep; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 2: Night ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 3: Night ASW attack; 1 DD fire; no hits Day 3: Night ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 3: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire Day 3: Day ASW attack; sub diving deep; no DDs fire (4 attacks in 1 day) Day 4 to 5: - Day 6: Day ASW attack; no DDs fire Day 7: Night ASW attack: 1 DD fire; no hits Day 8 to 9: - (refuelling) tie That’s 2 subs sunk and 4 damaged plus 1 destroyer sunk. 3 ties. In 3 of the cases the US destroyers find and sink the sub the first day. Even though the allied sonar/asdic probably was better than the Japanese 60x60 miles is a lot of ocean (all airplanes was set to stand down). Also none of the destroyers had radar. US subs can many times escape with damage and fight another day, IJN subs will more likely sink when hit. The mk 7 delivers almost twice the damage of the Type 95 (600 vs. 324). Both subs have nearly the same durability (30 vs. 33) IJN destroyers attack more than US destroyers, but many times fail to hit. The Type 95 accuracy is less than the mk 7 (7 vs. 9). They also use their night experience to attack at night. While allied ASW is more deadly than IJN ASW, the destroyers pay a higher prize. Maybe the mk-14 is to blame here. US subs seems to dive deep more than IJN subs.
