Peever -> Multi National Fleets? (9/20/2004 2:54:26 AM)

Are the Allies allowed to create multi national fleets? Can I combine some RN & USN ships to create a fleet?

I never had a problem. Probably a bit gamey but what the heck....

Yes, you can. The navy units I evacuated from the DEI, I have dutch cruisers and US flush deckers operating all the time.

Hi, What is gamey about this. ABDA stands for American-British-Dutch-Austrailan

USN CA Houston was sunk along with RAN CL Perth. Dutch Admiral Doorman had ships from all these navies under his command. There is nothing at all gamey about this it was the historic command situation.

Thanks for the fast responses. Just starting my first main campaign. I'm so used to playing PTO on my SNES and you couldn't combine foreign fleets in that game. [:'(]

It's slightly gamey if the players do it all the time, because there are issues of differences in supply, doctrine, and (in some cases) language that limited multi-national fleets historically. OTOH, immediately after PH Churchill suggested sending the Repulse and PoW to reinforce the US Pacific Fleet. I guess I'd sum up by saying that although it was done in real life, because the game doesn't model the hassles and inefficiencies (not to mention potential political squabbles) attendant to the formation of such forces, players should use them sparingly.

Hi, The game does model some of the problems. Make a TF where the largest ship is other then USN. Now try to assign a USN Admiral to command TF.
In order to have USN commander you have to form TF with USN ship as flagship and then transfer in other ships. (The AI will not do this)

Early on most of the Allied ships that can operate with other navies are untrained. They will do poorly no matter what. Now by the time they are trained enough to be effective we can assume they have also learned how to operate together.

When I am the Allied player I give command of mixed TF to Nation that has largest ship present or when more then 1 Navy has large ships in equal numbers I give command to Nation with most VP in TF. I use Doorman and Crace and other Admirals. (As Japan I use senior officers based on ships in TF. Any TF that has CV or BB goes to Vice Admiral. TF with CVL or CA Rear Admiral. Then I pick according to skills and type of TF. (and whether I want caution or aggression to be important)

Leaders gain skill from use. If you don't use the leaders with low numbers they will remain unskilled. You have to pick missions they can complete and not hurt you but you also have to use them.
