mogami -> RE: The Phony War is Over (11/23/2004 7:47:06 AM)

Hi, Did not have time to read every post so forgive me if I mess up here.

First when I took PH in testing I lost 0 CV

I lost many transports and escorts

After I captured PH I discovered no amount of Japanese airpower had any influence on enemy TF outside range but a large force was required to protect PH.

The Allies only have to respond to Japanese efforts that might win the war. They can ignore Japanese efforts that might embarass or cause them discomfort. But if they can not win they are forced to endure.

Here is the great secreat for Japanese players. Don't make the allied player endure what he can endure. Force him to submit to what he cannot permit.

If Japan captures PH before it is indespiable it will be dispenced with.

Since I can not explain this at length I will explain it as simply as I can.

If you don't kill me.... you don't hurt me.

Well thinks look really bad for me. You would think My troops would retreat towards a place were they could not be trapped. Well they are plain stupid and retreat to mouelim. Now I have a ton of troops cut off with the whole jap army closing in. He will destory the poor Chinese army with over half a million troops and now has close to 300000 troops in lower burma. How he is supplying all of his troops in China and here I have no clue. How he is garisiong the chinese cities I have no clue. Will he take India we will. If he can move supplies over the dirt paths in Northern Burma and Eastern India he will destory the British. My only hope is to move my Army of the South which is assembling in OZ towards the Rabaul and the southern Oil fields. This are my last hopes to knock him out before he knocks me out.

This is a huge problem with the game. There should be away to do more orderly withdraws. Same thing has happened in the Phillippines in several games.

How he is supplying all of his troops in China and here I have no clue. How he is garisiong the chinese cities I have no clue.

During the Phony War I sent several supply convoys to Southeast Asia. China basically feeds itself with the occasional convoy if needed.

My only hope is to move my Army of the South which is assembling in OZ towards the Rabaul and the southern Oil fields. This are my last hopes to knock him out before he knocks me out.

The IJN has been rested and is prepared to be sunk.

Awesome, congrats! It would be interesting to see what the score looks like after that ... Personally I would also be interested to know what ground units were involved, if that's not classified.

Hopefully this will convince more Allied players to pay attention to China.

Winning China is the only way for Japan to win the war.

Alikchi2 -> RE: The Witch is Dead (11/24/2004 8:09:38 PM)

Holy hell, that's frightening.

China can't stand up to that. There's just too much space to cover and not enough well-armed Chinese.

If you want to knock them out, head for Kuching - quick..

Thing that pisses me off if that there was only one unit blocking my troops from behind. So I guess that means 300000 some troops will just quit becasue of this, what a joke.

No heroic breakouts in this game. [:'(]

Mog - when you tested this, did you do it head-to-head, against the AI, or against a human player? And what was the time frame - early 42, mid-42, later?

Thanks -

Dave Baranyi

If they don't change land combat/movement in one of the upcoming patches then many of us are going to have to re-learn everything we've ever learned about handling land combat in war games (even GG's war games).

The other thing that just doesn't seem right about LCUs is that they can take so much punishment from the air with little or no effect. In WW II, a division that was on the move (not dug into a prepared position) was very vulnerable to severe disruption due to air attacks. And in WitP you can easily amass very large air groups to essentially carpet bomb a region. But the effect on ground troops is minimal at best.

You should be able to bomb that one unit behind you into oblivion, but no matter how many bombers you amass, you will never make a difference. Nor can you send any troops off to engage the troops behind you. (Somebody please explain to me why this is supposed to be "realistic".)

SteveV -> RE: The Witch is Dead (11/25/2004 6:14:06 AM)

I posted a similar comment on the Wobbly AAR and I want to make it clear that I am not in ANY WAY disparaging the wonderful play by the Japanese player here!

With that caveat clear, this AAR and Wobbly's have highlighted that there remains major flaws in the way the game simulates the Chinese conflict. There is no way any army, much less the Japanese non-mechanized army of this era could supply 550K troops inland to Chunking. No way, no how.

The game is great in the naval/air interaction and in the small invasion conflicts, but it simply fails to model the large scale land campaign in China and--upcoming in this game apparently and already present in Wobbly's fine effort--the Indian subcontinent.

It suggests that this theater should be left on computer control and concentrate on the parts of the game that work.

Strong opinion, I know, but does anyone REALLY think that In The Real World this could have possibly happened? Sure it is fun to baby kill the Chinese with the Japs, but it is not WW2. This is, to my mind, supposed to be a simulation first and foremost, and a game second. This Chinese/Indian gambit is a game tactic, not a simulation. All IMO of course. Others?

SteveV
