You mean WITP stands for War in the Pacific? I thought it meant Where Is The Patch?

Silly Me.

In all seriousness though I didn't know a whole lot about the Pacific Theatre before purchasing this game. I do have an avid interest in History though and WITP has led me to purchase several books on the theatre so that I have a better understanding of the Strategies employed on both sides.

Semper Fi brother [sm=party-smiley-012.gif] (USMC 1980-1984, 0311, 5811), I must warn you now; you show every early symptom of a true wargamer. Be prepared to spend more of your loose cash on books and games than most any other leisure time activity you might come to enjoy. When I was your age back in the Marines, I had no idea how much I would grow to enjoy history and the games I enjoy playing about historical military actions.

If you own any bookshelves today with nothing to put on them, do NOT throw them out or sell them in a yard sale. I guarantee you you will need them by the time you reach my age.

Jim

P.S. Thank you for your service in these difficult times. [&o]

I think my brother explained the difference to me pretty concisely when I tried to get him involved in WitP. I even offered to buy the game for him, his answer told the story, he said:

"I don't want to have to work when I play a game, I simply want to have fun".

Most people view wargames as work since they know little or nothing about history. My brother isn't a stupid man, but he has never been into history as I have, and lacks the necessary passion for history that allows me to enjoy these kinds of games so much. He simply looks to have fun with a game and unless you understand the war in the Pacific, this game isn't very exciting. The most exciting parts would be the battle resolutions and they are pretty basic.

If GG had wanted to hook gamers like my brother, battle resolutions would have to be a big part of the game. Perhaps something in 3D where a player could jump in and fly a plane or captain a ship. Then gamers like my brother would love WitP, he'd see a purpose to the strategic portion of the game and put in the time to learn how to play. He loves the Total War series and has gotten quite good, but it is the battle engine that drew him in, not history or the chess like strategic overlay.

I mean how many here actually know nothing "historical" about the Pacific War? Most of us bring a ravenous interest in history to our gaming experience. We are indeed a small minority in the gaming world.

It's not so much as most people are too stupid, have attention deficit disorder, or are uninterested in history to play wargames, but that they have involved lives which leave only small blocks of time to devote to recreational acitivities on a computer. Wargame take more time commitment that even people with strong interests in history often have. My WitP time is rapidly coming to an end, as I need to get to work on my own non-work programming efforts. People that have only three or four hours a week to devote to recreation on a computer are not just stupid or non-historic. They simply have other interests.

I've always said games like WitP's greatest strength is also, by far, its greatest weakness.
