freeboy -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:08:19 PM)

a ship

DrewMatrix -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:09:56 PM)

This is a ship BEFORE the patch. I can tell because it is smoking [:D]

freeboy -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:11:25 PM)

lmao

Brausepaul -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:11:41 PM)

But it doesn't inhale [:'(]

RevRick -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:20:03 PM)

The Engineering Officer better not while walking by the Captain in the Wardroom - that much smoke would get the attention of a blind man in a closet. Methinks from the rather strange looking turrets, if they are turrets, and the smoke it is a very early USN BB - but then again, I am usually wrong. Maybe is the USS Skeered o'Nothin.

I'll just throw out a Class - New York, for starters.

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:21:50 PM)

IJN BB (Fuso/Ise class?) before their modernization.

RevRick -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:23:39 PM)

Did they have tripod masts? [Scratches head, pulls beard, shrugs shoulders - books are still buried under theology books - oh well]

timofte74 -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:24:15 PM)

HMS Hood.

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:28:25 PM)

Yes they did, before moderniztion. They looked very "British", whom the IJN modeled itself after.
Modernizing included reboilering to burn oil, (that's why the pictured ship is smoking so much), addition of anti-torpedo bulges, minor addition to deck armor, and the "pagoda" superstructures, all for the loss of a knot or two...

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:38:25 PM)

Notice the pre-modernization tripods.

Tankerace -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:46:01 PM)

WWI BB or BC, judging by the twin turrets and tripod NOT a US BB (US WWI BBs had cage masts until 1927). Judging by the spotting top, either a British designed or influenced ship. Im going to say either a Fuso or Ise, basically because the spotting top is seperated, and forward superstructure is to sparse to be a British ship, or a Kongo. Just my guess.

Marc -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/13/2004 11:55:22 PM)

same ship, different view:

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 12:06:08 AM)

Nope, don't think its Hood. Lookee picture, dated 1924.
http://www.waffenhq.de/schiffe/hood.htm
Notice difference in spotting top.

mdiehl -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 12:49:48 AM)

wierd...

HMS Tiger class CB?

Marc -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 1:03:42 AM)

juliet7bravo -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 1:12:05 AM)

Kongo class, in the early 1920's. Only way to tell which one is someone with one of the reference books specifically for that class or ship. It's very likely the Kongo because of the turrets I think.

Hatamoto -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 3:11:10 AM)

Kongo class can be ruled out, had a slot aft of rear mast, not like in picture 2

Hatamoto -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 3:17:23 AM)

Ise class can be ruled out too, different midship section, pic 3 seems to be looking towards stern (Nagato class can be ruled out too)
For a short moment I thought you fooled all of us cause something remembered me of a french BB (Provence class, but she doesn´t fit either)
Atm I vote for Fuso class (Fuso between 1918 and 1932 or Yamashiro between 1918 and 1922)

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 3:46:07 AM)

I still think its either the Fuso or Yamashiro in the early twenties.

Picture #1 is from the bow looking aft.

Picture #2 is from the stern looking forward (hence small spotting top is closest to the camera). In picture #2, the ship is not underway, so no smoke.

Picture #3 is taken from the forward funnel looking aft, with the number 3 turret (counting from the bow) out of frame below, and the backside of turret 4 just behind the second smokestack. Note the deckhouse aft of the turret in view. Also note the main deck
level ending just aft of that deckhouse.

I dont think its a Kongo, because the Kongo types did not have a deckhouse aft of the third turret (just a large open main deck area):
http://www.military.cz/ww2_ships/Japan/BB/Kongo/kongo.htm

I dont think its an Ise/Hyuga, because turrets number 3 and four are too close together, and you should see them in picture # 3. Also, the main deck level of the Ise ends just at the barbette of turret number three:
http://www.military.cz/ww2_ships/Japan/BB/Ise/ise.htm

I dont think its a Mutsu/Nagato, because they had only four twin turrets (two forward, two aft, no obstructions to their field of fire), and the main deck level ending at turret number three:
http://www.military.cz/ww2_ships/Japan/BB/Mutsu/mutsu.htm

British ships had larger spotting tops than can be seen in picture #1, and slightly larger bridge are superstructures:

You guys have tripped over my real lifelong interest. That said, I am prone to mistakes too...

tsimmonds -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 4:29:44 AM)

yamashiro

Belce -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 4:51:13 AM)

Yamashiro didn't have that open tripod at the front.
http://www.military.cz/ww2_ships/Japan/BB/Yamashiro/yamashiro01_s.jpg

grr won't use the image from there, please go to the link.

The Yamashiro is the right idea I think in terms have having mid ship main gun batteries.

mlees -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 5:45:13 AM)

Lets see if this jpg uploads.
Notice open tripod in the "as built" 1915 version of Fuso/Yamashiro.

That is after a late 1920's rebuild. She looked like the plans above as built.

Marc -> RE: Name That (7) ;-) (10/14/2004 10:47:01 PM)

Fuso is the correct answer.
The pictures were taken in 1920.
