Gentlemen (and ladies)

I just received my Christmas present from my brother (yes, I know it was late but he got me what I wanted[:D][:D]). It is Norman Friedman's U.S. Destroyers an Illustrated Dsesign History. Do any of you have a favorite destroyer (U.S., Japanese, allied).

I like the Cravens. I play Seekreig a war game for naval miniatures. These were numerous enough by late 42 and give me some hitting power (4 extra torpedo tubes) for those small scenarios in the South Pacific (it was a dark and stormy night....).

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 1:30:51 AM)

Oh by the way.... Did I mention I love these Norman Friedman books? The man is a very good author.

Mr.Frag -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 1:39:18 AM)

Porter [:D]

8 5" guns, whats not to like?

Karrick -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 1:55:48 AM)

USS Evans DD 552 My father served on her from the initail shake down cruises till May 11, 1945 where he was wounded.

The quore from the Presidential Citation:

For extraordinary heroism in action as support destroyer on radar picket station number 15 during an attack by approximately100 enemy Japanese planes, 40 miles northwest of the Okinawa Transport Area, May 11, 1945. Fighting valiantly against waves of hostile suicide planes plunging toward her from all directions, the USS EVANS sent up relentless barrages of anti-aircraft fire during one of the most furious air-sea battles of the war. Repeatedly finding her targets, she destroyed 14 enemy planes, assisted in downing three others and, by her vigilance and superb battle readiness, avoided damage to herself until subjected to a coordinated attack by five Japanese planes. Shooting one down clear of the ship, she was crashed by the other four with devastating effect. With all engineering spaces flooded and with a fire raging amidships, the gallant officers and men of the EVANS fought desperately against almost insurmountable odds and, by their indomitable determination, fortitude and skill, brought the damage under control, enabling their ship to be towed to port and saved. Her brilliant performance in this action reflects the highest credit upon the EVANS and the United States Naval Services.”

Cpt.Buckmaster -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 2:03:40 AM)

The USS NICHOLAS, DD-449.

Why? Because it's my name! [:D]

BossGnome -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 2:09:21 AM)

Me, the WITP destroyer: Le Triomphant. It's a big destroyer (13 vps) with great AA capability. In my campaign as Japan, I have not yet managed to hit it with anything, while in my campaign with the allies, it fought valiantly at Rabaul, and was one of the few ships there to avoid great damage (took only 13 sys damage!) It also helped to stop the japanese from taking Rabaul Early.

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 2:25:10 AM)

On second thought...

I may have to agree with Mr Frag. One shot those extra 4 torpedos are gone. Those 8 5 inch just keep firing and firing. I will have try that.[:D]

EUBanana -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 2:30:48 AM)

HMS Glowworm. Despite the cutesy name, thats a ship that had balls of purest brass.

Ramming speed!

Tankerace -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 2:32:44 AM)

I'd have to say the 4 pipers. They look old and slow, but they can hold their own.

Mike Scholl -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 5:05:45 AM)

For the Pacific Theatre, the FLETCHER's.....Lot's of them, 10 tubes, 5-5", good AAA, good ASW, decent
cruising radius, what's not to like?....If you are talking a single DD for a surface fight, then the
SHIMAKAZE looks good with 15 "Long Lances" and 39 knots coupled with 6 5"---but her AAA and ASW
sucks.

madmickey -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 5:18:14 AM)

USS Johnston DD557. If you do not know why you should find out. You did not ask the class.

DMS Aaron Ward took a licking off Okinawa and kept on ticking. Er, well, sorta.

double post. matrix servers're screwy tonight.

madflava13 -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 5:30:28 AM)

I have a soft spot for the Farraguts... Don't ask why. I just like the "old-school" DDs. They're carrying the bulk of the war in my PBEM right now - escorting convoys, carriers, surface TFs and conducting ASW sweeps. Not to mention bombardments and fast raids. Not the most heavily armed or technologically advanced, but they are holding the line right now.

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 5:32:53 AM)

Madmickey;
Thanks for the reply. I will look up USS Johnston. As probably goes for most of you, doing research like that is fun. Thanks.

Ron Saueracker -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 6:07:51 AM)

Any "Goldplater" for US. Benhams most...weird, eh? Ever? Gonna have to say the RCN Tribals!![:D]

They could probably put it back into service, better then the subs we got shafted with.

C'mon...the Upholders are not bad. Better than the Collins Class OZ has payed through the nose for. Actually, we should stick to building decent surface combatants and buy OZ subs and vice versa. Had we not had a wimpy PMO in the fifties, we could have been selling jets too instead of buying US cast offs.

tanksone -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 7:19:07 AM)

While not a Japanese fanboy...how about the Shimakaze, I know AA & ASW were weak but a night time surface batttle with all those 24 inch torpes brings nightmares[&o]

The Arrow the biggest "Fighter" with the most limited visibility. All it could do is shoot down big bomber missles could do the job a lot better. The pilot would have to pray if he meet an enemy fighter.

1 on 1 with yamato?

u mean a DD against the yamato?

i did that once, well with a squadron of 7 DD, me in command at the front of the line of course

i was playing a game called Destroyer Command

it was near the end of the war of course, near okinawa

the yamato was heading out on her 1 way mission to attack the USN/allied forces at okinawa, the plan was for her to beach herself and hammer away with her guns till she ran out of shells

anyway, i arrange my DDs in a line ahead formation, like a rake, with about 4000 yards distance to make the most of radar scanning

and we pick her up heading SW

i rearrange em into a column formation with about 500 yards distance, we engage her about 2400 hours may 7th (45) and we let off a HUGE salvo of torps, just about all of em towards the escorts and yamato herself

most of the escorts get blown out of the water, the rest are pciked off by gunfire

then all thats left is the big monster herself

i shoot off the rest of my torps, and have all my DDs start shootin their 5 inchers

i turn them so they can all give her full broadsides

and i make kind of a hook run around her bombarding her the whole time, then i let off the rest of my torps

and their shooting and shooting, and despite having radar i decided to light her up with starshells to get a good luck and see how shes rendered, and she looks pretty good

and finally, shes "declared sunk" at around 0100 i think

i sit around and watch her, and she finally goes under stern first seemingly in defiance around 0124

i lost 1 maybe 2 DD i think, and i think they gave me the Navy Cross for it[:'(]

as for MY favorite DD? ill have to think about it[:'(]

Tankerace -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 7:32:53 AM)

I loved Destroyer Command.... except I found out Allen M. Sumners are Kamikaze magnets.... in 1 mission (last or next to last in the campaign) I lost 3 to kamikaze Bettys... Shot down like 30 of the buggers.

madmickey -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 7:58:13 AM)

It and the 2 other destroyer in it task group took on more than the Yamato.

[:D][8D]

u mean the radar picket mission north of okinawa?

i didnt lose any on that mission

i aloways ordered all my DDs to concentrate their AA[:'(]

i got like 3 silver stars 3 bronze stars and 2 navy corss in the atlantic campaign, tho i didnt gtew to finish it

i think i shot down around 20-25

u ever hear iof this site? -

http://207.44.164.159/phpBB_subclub/index.php

they play silent hunter 1 and 2 and soon 3

and DC, along with a game called sub command

mlees -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 9:21:14 AM)

Any DD with twin-gun type turrets just looks mean!

afspret -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 9:23:31 AM)

Don't know why, but for some reason I've always been partial to the Wickes/Clemsons class (aka 4 pipers) DDs.

They were not of the DP variety - no AA value.

Favorite DD: 'lucky' Shigure - participated at Coral Sea, Midway, numerous Tokyo Express runs in the Solomons, first Battle of Guadalcanal, sole survivor of the Vella Gulf disaster, Battles of Vella Lavella, Horaniu and Empress Augusta Bay, damaged at Truk but escaped, naval battle at Biak, present at the Turkey Shoot, sole survivor of Nishimura's force at Surigao Strait, and well - finally sunk by SS Blackfin 60 years and three days ago.

Hornblower -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 6:16:54 PM)

USS O'Bannon.. The history of the Pacific war,” wrote Admiral Halsey, “can never be written without telling the story of the USS O’Bannon,” 17 battle stars earned. I'm pretty sure she was tied for 2nd place with the San Fran, only behind the Big-E.

Sardaukar -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 7:06:03 PM)

USS John D. Ford

http://www.domeisland.com/flushdeck/puc228.html

That one has already sunk 3 Japanese subs on Australian east coast in my campaign game against AI. [:)]

Cheers,

M.S.

RevRick -> RE: Favorite Destroyer (1/27/2005 10:11:53 PM)

USS Laffey - DD 724.. The one which replaced the can lost at Guadalcanal. Read up on that one. Talk about a kamikaze magnet. Then again, I like the pre-war little boys who held the line before their bigger brothers came on line.
