Two days of posting here, and a summary of whats what as the month of march winds down Burma Im keeping at least 5 sq of zeros here, they are in good shape, sent 52 over India , and knocked down 16 P39s for loss of 2 I made a big mistake sending divisions to Akyab, they are returning. tabpub bombs Akyab every night, and some days, at least it means he leaves rangoon alone BBs yammato, mutsu and nagato are at victoria point. they await 1cv, 1cvl, 1cve to come and reinforce, they are at singapore A tanker is headed toward adaman island as bait 2 sqs of betties back all this up Only 1 of Lillies is available for land operations Malaya is spewing out supplies, thankfully, and is base for 2 sqs of fighters that are training The bombers left today for palembang Sumutra He has a lot of units in the bush, so 2 brigades are on guard duty Some oil here, and Im trying to repair it Palembang is a crater, the 3 divisions are moving south in pursuit, and at palembang 1 sq of oscars is escorting 3 sally, and 4 naval bombers. Im tempted to load up and try for a grab, but wont risk it, its one base at a time here. Borneo Some oil at brunie. Miri miri shows fully repaired, yet has made no oil at all all game[:(] The 2 ports on the north west corner appear empty now, so some troops enroute, a good evac by tabpub tarakan is producing only 19 oil, troops enroute for balikapapan, mainly 65 brigade from darwin Im basing sonias and nates in the area, and a lot of transport planes Celebes 27 nells are at kendari, awaiting evacs from soerabaya Timor 27 betties also await 3 small 1cl, 5 dd task forces are in the area Java I landed paras at that little base north of soerabaya, and am flying in some troops reaction has been swift, a unit is headed that way As an experiment i fly in some sonias, put em on naval attack. The idea is simple, can I flush out ships from soerabaya North aust Darwin troops in great shape, no sign of the enemy at the southern pickets yet, although townsville is very dark[8D] 2 sqs of helens await trade New guinea port moresby is home to 2 sqs of betties and zeros, slowly building here Some trapped units near rabual, to be hunted down, I saw some subs trying to evac them, but i dont think it worked for him Solomons Lunga has zeros and 1 sonia sq, backed by 3 bettie sq at rabual Occupying all the bases left this week Gilberts Im a bit worried that they are a bit light on, only 1 sq of zeros and nells here tarwana is heavy though with naval guns, and building nicely wake is very exposed, as is marcus China Fighting has been viscious he tries to take nanning, I hold He cuts the nanning road to the south I push him off he tries again, further south, and succeeds I launch massive offensive towards wuchow It fails I hold some troops in wuchow, he pours heaps in, i retire most to the south 2 hexes, I i reclear the road to nanning, and threaten wuchow west flank he cuts off wuchow I contest that hex he deliberatly attacks at wuchow, and fails I clear the road to wuchow, and am in pursuit I feel i am winning, just I await hisoffensive "spring rain" KB 2 days ago the CAs swept into Norfolk isalnd Hosho hit a AP there 1st, and the cas find 1 pg and 2 troop carriers, they sink them all, lots of troops drowned 1 ca hits noumea tabpub reckons that if hosho is all there is I have big balls, or Im a lunatic The convoy from NZ is fleeing east Last night KB is told to head to Aukland, and set to Naval attack, port attack Hosho will try to get to the convoy The CAs are going to refuel Ship signals in noumea, and a tanker is spotted, so I turn Chokia around, she can try again tomorrow Subs everywhere. I must be causing chaos - or I hope I am Phillipines Almost forgot the war grinds on, a second div enters manilla, and the bombers are flying now - more recon did the trick I think manilla is weakening noticeably, soos i attack At clarke at least the troops are recovering here well also, 110000 to about 58000. soon to attack again here too. I remain hopeful of inflicting at least 6 months more pain to tabpub I pray he will try a counter offensive somewhere soon!

27/3/42 Munda is occupied The nightly blenhiem raid on Akyab, very annoying this Unloading at singkawang and russel island, oooops, enemy troops at singkawang Some of my ships are spotted south of noumea Lillies hit mandalaby, no escort. Whats going on zero men?! 79 sallies hit tjilitjiap the trng flights continue At kragen 12 nate I moved in fight 6 brewsters, 7 hawks and 3 beufort coming out of tjilitjiap, we knock down 4 brewsters This is good, now I know the extent of the air opposition left. Not much[:)] I reco norfolk island again, just to get him worried The Allies shock at wunchow, get a 1 to 1, suffer 2200 casos and are repulsed. GOOD KB two days out of Aukland, and unspotted I order a deliberate at manilla And will try to get CAs to hit noumea Looks like his convoy got away 28/3/42 AT kragen he taunts me about a so called suicide attack by my paras here, I am not displeased, 2 units are trying to destroy me here, and they have now lost there forts. the idea was to try and get some air reaction, and maybe a sonia to naval attack Did not come off, never mind Singkawang Im in trouble, or maybe not, his troops look in bad shape Every BB and CA in the area will bombard the place tomorrow, plus all LBA in the area In addition the CV and CVLs at singapore will attack, just to give him pause about the location of my CVs and the make up of them, in case KB does not launch tomorrow Still marching south in sumutra In China he is resting, Im trying to move around to the east of the city This is a classic titanic battle, even both sides. To the North of China I have a few divisions gathered, IM going to try something here soon B17s hit akyab again, this is going well as a diversion A dutch regiment pushes me out of kragean, the troops hang on, and will be rescued. I deliberate attack at Manilla, another fiasco, 0 to 1, and 4000 more casos. THis again is crud I think he has supermen[:(] So in the phillipines a new desperate tactic. I have found that the troops in clarke can march to manilla, so they will, we will put everything into the attack here, and see what happens. he cant leave clarke. The main action is south of noumea Liberators have moved into the place - so they aint in australia now getting organised for darwin or Port moresby They attacked the CAs, they attacked little hosho, they hit nuthen[:'(][:'(] P 39s attacked the chokia, she did not go in Hosho has no fuel, non, zip, nada, a tanker will fill her tomorrow - if a sub does'nt get her 1st (1 sub action in the area this turn, no hits iether way) The CAs have refuelled, they will try to hit nuomea Chokia retires KB will be in range and will hit Aukland tomorrow, here is hoping. SHE IS UNDETECTED The big thing is the glenns, lots of thunderstorms, so op losses have been terrible amongst them, and the recon has stopped now Can not over emphasise how vital these subs are for naval search, I will never use one for attacks if I can help it. Roll on tomorrow, I feel his CVs have left, but the subs did not see anything, so here is hoping.

29/3/42 well this is it, will the attack on aukland be worthb it!! 1 sub south of japan 4 ca,4dd sweep into noumea, and encounter only pt boats, sinking 2 the bombardment hits a dd once in the harbour. The daily bombings go on about the place KB strikes aukland, full surprise. No carriers for 3 vals and 2 kates 9 AKs and 1 AP are sunk The fight swirls around wunchow he attacks again at kragean, the troops hold on BB yammato battle group goes for a cruise, more in hope at the moment

30/3/42 mines at tobiali An ASW action near PNG, miss each way NB singkawang An AP is hit enroute to PM by a sub Lots of enemy air near wuchow Ive turned my air to manilla, especially the port, trying to kill supplies. B17s pound Akyab OH POOO, hosho is hit twice by the liberators, stationary with no fuel, 1 hex short of the tanker Singkawang falls Green island fell I have a little unit stalled north east of yenen, it wont move, tabpub pushes back a hex Troops at kraegen still hold, 2000 vs 800. And spring rain strikes, direction kaifeng. I am assessing it.

31/3/42 ASW action near png, miss. sub action off kraegen, miss, as my APDs get a lot of the troops out ASW action, miss Look, its obvious, use subs under air cover and you lose, do what tabpub does, use your subs away from the air cover, and live! DBs at brisbane, poo!, his CVs got away West of wuchow 4 divs vs 4 corps, its a stalemate GAWD, he keeps pouring the troops into the wunchow, nanning triangle. The offensive to the north of kaifeng does not seem that strong, Im going to fall away ahead of it, and see if I can trap him, I have heaps of units here north and south of his thrust. This is looking good. he also paid the withdrawal penalty today, not sure what to make of it Hosho is losing power badly

Down it goes.[:@] I send 27 betties to soerabaya on a port attack, 1 ak, 1 as. hit, 2 pt boats sunk NO CAP Fighting about wuchow continues, kragean holds still, troops away on the apd group I scuttle hosho[:(]

2/4/42 a sub spotted of tokyo, but no group to attack it at the moment Im only one month behind schedule[:@][:@][:@][8\|] 2 sub actions (asw groups) off png and buka. no hits iether way the daily bombings continue Akyab is hit today by B17s I have a partial unit of 35 brigade flown into here, Im hoping a amphib op is in the offing, 2 days until another CV is released, a week to get to theatre, thats 2cv, 2cvl, 1cve vs the british fleet, plus 5 bbs PPlease tabpub, lets see a move into akyab! Kragean units destroyed, just a few troops lost Im about to hit balikpapan

3/4/42 ASW action off japan - miss ASW action off phillipines - miss Naval bombardment pontiak The troops storm ashore at balikapapan, shock attack tomorrow he recons baker, and akyab again Lots of air supports spring rain, but Im confident we can clean up this little mess soon. KB drifts slowly home, about parrallel to brisbane now, smack in the middle of the coral sea manilla and clarke are bombed, again troops are so slow in sumutra, about 5 days before we reach the southern tip. I have LRCAP of oscars ordered for soerabaya, fighters there now tabpub claims the phillipines will survive to May, and I believe him. But for KB in the coral sea, I would be very worried by now about a counter attack. Finally I have mulled over my options, and have cancelled any phase 4 ops, with one exception - 65 th brigade will go for perth[:D] next month,Im guessing troops there will be enroute soon for derby, lets see if I can back door him This depends on what happens at akyab this month, but three AOs are allocated, and are enroute for the op. Ph 4 is to gather 4 divisions and shipping at Truk, and await the chance to counter strike. The other 2 will go to the solomon chain. I do not believe he can possibly threaten the DEI once I get them, until darwin is cleared, and that will take a while. So ph 4 disposition of divisions will be 5 in burma 2 at darwin 4 at truk 2 in solomons NG units heavily deployed into the gilberts, and siapan.

5/4/42 troops continue struggling ashore balikapapan, guns hitting transports Akyab pounded by B 17s The APDs get attacked by air from soerabaya, and 3 are hit by torps. An enemy ak is sunk by sonias near balikapapan Shock at balikapapan, forts to 0 near kaifeng, we drive 2 chinese corps back.... so much for spring rain I decide that all CVs will go to the south east pacific. yammato battle group will go to victoria point

6/4/42 Cleared mines at batavia, lost a MSW to the coastal guns Akyab is still being hit, i send 90 zeros, trying to set a trap, so he hits pagan instead[8\|] I sink a sub of batavia KB dodges a sub balikapapn falls, and has full oil!!!![:)][:)][:)] so far oil is about half what I would like. Its a admin turn , trying to organise where engineers will go.

A good day at last troops begin entering the tip of sumutra, attack shortly A sub is hit off rangoon by a lilly, I suspect this is a signit sub, as a troop convoy arrives at moulimien today, and it was headed there. he recons hanoi - again, and rangoon All the zeros go back to rangoon All the bombers in the phillipines fly today, and hit clarke well. I deliberate attack at clarke, time to finish this, must finish this I suffer1600 casos, him, 1400, and the forts come down 2 to 7[:'(] rest tomorrow as I deliberate at manilla, then try again the next day I order the paras to take bali, could be messy[:@]

Trng flights in sumutra I land a snlf at cape york - purely for miscieve purposes I invade woodlark Para's hit bali A deliberate attack at Manilla, 0 to 1 I bombard clarke AND THEN DISASTER, a unit i thought trapped to the east of manilla springs into the hex south of manilla, and now 2 divisions are cut off from supply. And at the moment I have nothing to push him out with, the single snlf is not enough I mis read zones of control somewhere. And now the troops wont retreat out of manilla. poo. poo. poo. shock at bali, 1 to 1, crud[:@] tarwana size 4

Helens - moved from darwin to cagayan, miss Akyab hit again, tabpub finally has twigged that Im not really there.[:'(] Yet another AP lost to a sub near batavia. 13/4/42 hes moved troops into batavia, as I unload at medan I capture rennel island, Im slowly creeping south 38 tankers left, as one crippled ages ago goes from 45 systen, 20 flood, 15 fires , to a sunk state in , what 5 days, and 2 of them in a size 4 port at davao. Damage contrl guys!!!! Wuchow is stalemate spring rain is finished - Im saving PP for mu next big effort Lots of air action in china - on his behalf - i wont be drawn into it yet The invasion of java continues troops enroute to legaspi, and the fast transports have made the first deliveries, Im detirmined to re open the route to manilla. Surely he is out of supplies by now[:@]

As available oil to the empire slips below 1 million the goverment takes a punt and orders a modest increase in naval shipbuilding, believing the Army "that java will be ours by May" It better be[:@] 13/4/42 troops unload at rennel island, to deny an easy fwd allied base. The campaign to keep his heavy bombers at arms length continues the tanker torpedoed last week sinks, 38 left Tabpub recons Gilli, gilli, it reamains empty off planes, only a few float planes. aircraft are enroute though. Wuchow in China remains stalemated.Im fully committed, but Tabpub strength grows slowly in the area. I feel a defeat is coming here, but can do little about it In the phillipines I continue the daily bombings, and the fast transports and a convoy are enroute with the emergency reinforcements. Its so painful!!!! In Burma his lysanders continue to hit Akyab The java invasion begins, as troops unload into Medan, no opposition A big naval bombardment hits Tijilitajap I begin to move some air units about

14/4/42 The medan invasion continues smoothly, support troops to occupy the air base at batavia are loading, it will fall easily I feel. Emirau island is occupied, rennel turns red 80 sallies, lillies, betties with 60 zeros hit Mandalaby in a nice co ordinated attack surprise is nice My combat report shows only moderate damage, tabpub e mail tells me the lysanders were badly hurt. Akyab is hit by 25 B17s - the numbers decrease each time, is he having trouble supporting them? Subs attack near rennell island but miss The troops continue to throw rocks at each other in the phillipines 3 sally squadrons are added to the phillipine air force , to increase the wieght of iron delivered each day 2 sqs of zeros arrive, both are slated for the south pacific, one is am3[:'(]

15/4/42 Kiriwana in the solomons is occupied today way down between Sydney and brisbane SS I-6 has a shot at an AS but misses. Buggar I lose an AP of batavia to a sub. He is having a ball here, but they are at least empty. All my sub commanders are now drunk at kwalejean while we think about what to do next. 23 Sally, 48 betty, 50 Lilly, 98 zero hit mandalaby at 7000 feet this time, and really cream the place. Prescence established, half the zeros now will go back to java for the climax of this battle. 23 Sonias attack soerabaya port, bali is functional! The CAP is murder, all but 1 plane damaged , 1 AK hit, 1 AS hit I expect the great dash for safety to begin soon 96 sally hit manilla port I continue to recon Midway, just to get him worried - after all KB was last seen headed toward the gilberts, north east wards[:D] He attacks at wuchow, 1 to 1 , no dice tabpub!!! his turn to pay the price, 3385 casos to my 390 Are we both in a tar pit in China?[X(][X(][8\|]

16/4/42 A AK is hit by a sub north of the phillipines, another convoy route move[8\|] only 23 B17 hit akyab today[;)] I have about 4 little groups of zeros training at the moment, singkawang is a wonderful target. the bombing continues at manilla The 1st troops arrive at the manilla blockade, 2 days time all the tanks and major units will attack, tonight a BB will bombard, the road will be claer weeks end I intend to attack at Clarke again immediately after that In the gilberts, Vals from KB hit a sub, announcing her prescence At truk a new mini KB forms tomorrow, Hiyo, Junyo, shoho, zuiho, ryujo and taiho. I intend to take most of the bombers off this group, replace them with fighters from the java battles, and form a CAP trap task force, ready for what I feel will be the showdown in June. In our mail we both feel that we are building towards this[:'(][:'(][8D][8D] I order a zero sweep over cooktown, intend to start bombing it every day I can from tomorrow on, and I order a port ayyack against Dacca - just to remind tabpub that he must keep his fleet at arms length in the bay of bengal - Im only keeping Akyab from being invaded by the betty threat I feel, so time to reinforce the feeling of the threat.[:D] Im starting to put serious thoughts to what next, when the phillipines fall [:@][:@] I will have 2 divs in burma, 3 divs in java, 2 divs in darwin, and 6 in the phillipines. Those 6 are 3 hurt real bad 3 pretty good. So what to do, where to go next. Im at the river in Burma, the top end and DEI are(will be ) mine, the solomons and Port moresby are mine, baker island is the limit in the gilberts, and wake is also mine the date will be june 42 The fleet, and the fleet air arm are intact the army air is about 75% of what it was. 17/4/42 As troops enter a empty batavia, mine sweepers are busy in its port. A very busy shuttle service is bringing 3 divisions from sumutra over to java 5th, 18th and the imperial, plus lots of artillery and engineers Sitting here at work Im trying to remember seeing the 5th div at all. Hope it has not gone missing during loading ect[:(] With the capture of batavia , the supporting troops that are already enroute, will allow the airforce to finally rid myself of the annoying remnants of the dutch airforce. With north australia in my grip, these units have no chance of reforming elsewhere again[8D] I land at sag sag Akyab is reconned again and again 54 zeros sweep cooktown, no opposition. But the AI must have detected that Port Moresby had no CAP, so the 1st B17 raid from cairns arrives, 12 B17s. No hits In the phillipines i now have 3 snlf units in the hex where a single phillipine infantry division has blocked the road to manilla. One of the old BBs pound it today, and will pound again tomorrow Every bomber in range will attack tomorrow Still not confident of success though. The attack at clarke will go in tomorrow as well. Regardless of the result, the attacks must continue, I have 110000 men to his 52000. In chine its stalemate. Looking very carefully at the Prep points, a very large chunnk of the army in northern china begins to move south on the railway - a calculated risk. target changsa, and a desperate attempt to relieve the pressure on wuchow front. Elsewhere KB and mini KB fuel at truk and Kwalejien 2 extra zero sqs move to Siapan, next stop truk. 1 sq of oscars and 1 of nates in bali are ordered to sweep soerabaya airfield at 100 feet, could be tragic[8\|] The pounding of mandalaby is ordered to resume tomorrow . 18/4/42 now the sneak is laying mines at bali[:'(] 2 Bbs bomb tijilitjap sub attack on a tanker near the phillipines - miss p 39s hit akyab My oscars and sonias attack the field at soerabaya, and get a few kills on the ground Wuchow the chinese airforce turns up again The phillipines - 109 sallies hit the division blocking the road to manilla 47 B17s hit akyab - so much for that theory an ap is hit by air from soerabaya - the place still has teeth 9 b17 attack an AP in Port Moresby harbour, losing 1 to my 1 zero So with small beginings the enemy begins the grinding down of my air. I deliberate attack at clarke, 0 to 1 [:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:(] OH CRUD[:@][:@][:@][:@] 3500 casos to his 380 2 divisions ruined totally the deliberate attack south of manilla clears the road sag sag falls I am in despair over the situation in the phillipnes, I invested so heavily after a quick victory, and now it has all gone to pot. A new tactic is called for
